How it happened

The roll call at the Democratic convention was brought to the symbolic end that was expected when Hillary Clinton asked that Barack Obama be nominated by acclamation.

The letters thread is now closed.

Fine job.

Every news channel is gushing over how well the Democrats have run the convention so far... except....of course FAUX

If you tune into Faux you would think that a combination riot / food fight / bloodbath were going on.

Does what Faux news reports have ANYTHING to do with reality?

Senator Clinton,

Thank You. We move forward to victory.Hallelujah!

That was just terrific...

I was teary eyed after that. Great theater.

And. on this day, the 100th birthday of LBJ, to see an American of African heritage get the nomination was very emotional. Poor LBJ is discredited nowadays because of Vietnam, but he got things passed that Kennedy, as a northerner, could never have. A flawed, flawed, man but without him today might never have happened. He knew he'd lost the South for the Democrats but he did the right thing.

Well done, Hillary. Let's hope Bill can play his part too...!

Oh, stop it.

You begin this article with

"There are almost certainly still some people out there who are upset by how the roll-call vote here at the Democratic Convention was conducted."

Yeah, right. And I'm sure that Fox News will track down every one of them. But please, give it a rest. There are also plenty of people upset over all kinds of much more important things, like whether the Democratic Party platform is progressive enough, who think that congressional Democrats haven't done enough to win the war, who think that the party's commitment to universal health care is too weak, etc.

But by paying no attention to any criticisms coming from the left, and only echoing themes put out by McCain's camp (which is trying their hardest to stir up bitterness between former Clinton supporters and Obama), you remain a passive participant in the cable TV news spin cycle.

Faux News does not exist to report the news. Their real mission is fantasy maintenance.

I never thought I'd live to see this day.

Whether he wins or not, the Democrats have made history. My faith in the essential rightness of the American experiment has been supported for at least right now.

We are a people held together by a Constitution and a Bill of Rights, by ideas and not by blood. This nomination points out that a significant portion of the American electorate believes that as well. No blood, no soil, but the strength of vision and individual rights.

Langston Hughes wrote "I, Too Am America". The poem plays out as history today. I am a black woman, and today, I, too, am America. After centuries of the blood of minorities being spilled for my country's freedom, I see acknowledgement.

Today, it doesn't matter what Fox, Parker, the Sons of Silence, the Klan, or anyone else says. Today, we are all Americans. As I sit here crying, I have never been more proud of my people, the American people. Some are lunkheads, some are proud to be ignorant, but today, goddammit, today I sing America.

@domini

That was very moving. Thanks for sharing your feelings.

The timing worked out very nicely so that Hillary's move to nominate by acclamation got to be featured on the netwoks' nightly news broadcasts. Goood job, that!

Sen Clinton showed grace and class this afternoon.

There, that's settled. I haven't seen Bill's talk this evening but we can hope it's half as good as HRC's last night.

Soooooooooo. Jeb? Katetx? Proudtexas? We know where elephantman stands, what about you guys?

"We ARE ready 2 see a black President."

- with apologies to 2Pac, though I suspect he'd agree now, wherever he is.

Hillary's debt

I'm so impressed with how Hillary (and tonight, Bill) have set an example for unity behind Barack Obama at this convention, after he won the nomination, I finally went to hillaryclinton.com and donated $50 to help her pay off the campaign debt. My first donation to her, but I figured I could do at least that to say thank you.

"As many people as possible"

Well, certainly as many Obama worshippers as possible have been made happy. I'm picking up a lot of enthusiasm from the bots and other fans. We'll see how that translates into real unity when the polls come out. Will Americans buy manipulated "unity"? Probably. They bought a fake for the last two elections. Why should I think they'd be any smarter now?

Politics never was particularly "real", but at least the Presidents were real leaders and the conventions had a real vote. Until they selected a candidate who wasn't confident enough with the process to tolerate a real public vote. Too bad he can't do the same thing with the electoral college in the fall.

You may now go back to your regular Obama-worship. The Democratic Party is dead. Long live the Demo-Republican Party.

That's the spirit Jeb!

Nice rant. I knew you wouldn't let us down.

Jeez. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 07:47 PM

Jeb

You are a cartoon.

Great Speech

I was not amused by some of HRC's and Bill's actions and statements during and even since the primaries, but it appears they made a decision to look beyond themselves, and once that decision was made she applied all her formidable talents to making that clear.

She could have been acting, but having heard the speech rather than see it, I was utterly convinced by her voice of her sincerity, and quite moved by her sudden selflessness. I do hope she gets a position of power in an Obama administration.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 09:32 PM

@wellwater Hell, no!

She's my senator, and we need her in the Senate! (Plus, I doubt she'd accept a position in an Obama cabinet, when she can continue make a name for herself and help the country at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue.)

I hope they work well together as President and Senator. But I don't think she needs to be a part of his Administration.
