Wow. What a great job tonight. She did everything she needed to, drew the right contrasts, supported Obama, pummeled McSame. That line about Bush/McCain in the Twin Cities and not being able to tell them apart was a classic.
I just saw HRC deliver her speech.
Olbermann complimented her. With a sports metaphor "A Grand Slam. he knocked it out of the park, across the parking lot, and over the rooftops." He then went on to say many nice things, including that she couldn't have delivered a better speech to turn HRC supporters into Obama supporters.
Matthews couldn't bring himself to say much that was overtly complimentary (he seemed disappointed the speech "wasn't sentimental, it wasn't misty-eyed"), but did manage to spit out that it was a good "compact - that's the only word I can think of" to unite the party.
She delivered a helluva speech. I liked her Harriet Tubman reference: "If you hear the dogs, keep going ...." A lot of her rhetoric explained her own campaign. But thespeech wasn't about her. She did a great job of reminding her fans that the election was about something far more important than "just me" (and managed to make Bush and McCain look like Dumb and Dumber twins).
I dare anyone to call her shrill.
UPDATE: And the NYT headline? "Keeps Door Open for Future Bid." Did anyone else in America get that as the main thrust of her speech?
She said it best:
No way. No how. No McCain.
We don't need four more years ... of the last eight years.
I want you to ask yourselves, 'Were you in this campaign just for me?'
I posted this on another thread but I thought she did very well, and made it clear that it is time to just get to work.
She came across as powerful.
All about her. You'd think she was the nominee. The comment about McCain being her "friend." Oh yeah, she really wants to help Obama get into office. I just can't stand this woman.
Home run! Out of the park! She did what she needed to do. She accomplished it with passion, smarts, style and class. Like Michelle Obama's, it was an excellent speech. The women are out speechin' the men here. I didn't vote for Clinton in the primary.
I didnt watch, but want to know, did she address the threat to reproductive rights and equal pay for women as threats posed by McCain?
I think these are the things that need to be held up to the faces of her angry supporters and be told that voting for McCain or against Obama is the absolute DUMBEST way to show off your angry-feminist street cred.
Wow! What an historic time. I'm so proud of Hillary. Not only for coming "this close" to being the first female presidential nominee (and possibly president), but for putting to rest any question in the first few lines of her speech of who to vote for. An amazing speech from an amazing woman.
I'm sure the trolls will be out in force. It's sad. We have Hillary, a woman who has achieved so much, and to have the first African-American man, hopefully, be the president of the United States. It's an incredible time in history. I'm young, but the historical significance shines big and bright - and I'm so proud to be alive to see it.
Matthews seemed like a kid who had his favorite toy taken away, strung together several awkwardly worded shallow sentences, the whole time trying to figure out a way to "get back on his "Hillary's gona wreck the convention" message.
For that alone, I thank you Hillary.
She says that the fate of the country hangs in the balance, we must elect Obama.
Tore the shit out of John McCain!!
Best. Hillary. Speech. Ever.
And, the PUMA movement officially died tonight. Finally put out of its misery by the Great Senator from New York, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
United We Stand! Obama/Biden '08!
I think she did a profoundly good job. I'm finally happy with her again, which I haven't been for more than a year.
I don't know why she followed so much crappy advice while running for president and literally fulfilled every nasty stereotype ever hurled her direction, but if she'd maintained tonight's tough but gracious demeanor throughout the campaign, she would have had a real chance of winning.
But it's always easier when you've finished the race than it is when you're in it.
And totally funky fresh, the perfect oratory, for the democrat's success.
Matthews & Olberman like her fine when she's serving coffee. They just can't stand the threat of her actually being the one in power.
Hillary gave a powerful speech, saying the things she's said over and over in her campaign. Tonight she delivered it superbly and she's getting accolades. She was right then -- it's all about speeches.
Folks will pick it apart, but it was powerful She did a fantastic job and she set the stage for party success.
Yes on equal pay (very nicely done, mock-incredulous, "how in 2008 can he think this is ok?" type delivery).
No on reproductive rights. But she talked a lot about healthcare, which (presumably) atill includes women's reproductive health care. I haven't heard anyone say "smashmortion" or anything like it. Perhaps this is part of the "less (religious) values, more (secular) principles" suggestion from Gary Hart on how to win in the West?
I was really curious to hear what Hillary would say tonight. I think she did a tremendous job! She was inspiring and confident.
"Matthews & Olberman like her fine when she's serving coffee. They just can't stand the threat of her actually being the one in power."
Well since she mismanaged her campaign so much that despite all her advantages she lost, I guess they won't have to worry about it, hmm?
What a fantastic speech - probably Hillary Clinton's best ever. She spoke from the heart, spoke directly to her supporters, and graciously and wholeheartedly supported Obama from President with a call for Democratic unity.
Take that John McCain!
