What'd you think of Michelle Obama's speech?

It's the big question of the night -- I think she gave a great speech, and did exactly what she needed to, but I'm interested in knowing how Salon's readers felt about it.

The letters thread is now closed.

I Love Her!

Such grace, dignity, energy and optimism! I will be so proud to have her as a First Lady.

I was blown away.

She hit is out of the park

Michelle gave a beautifully crafted well delivered speech that hit all of the themes that will set the stage for Barack on Thursday night. She dispelled any thoughts that she is somehow radical or and "elitist". She came across exactly how she came across on "The View" and on the stump for Obama. She is intelligent and charasmatic and loves her family and her country. That came through loud and clear tonight. A home run for the Democrats.

I loved it

I thought Michelle Obama's speech was terrific. She's an excellent speaker - more like a storyteller. I thought the love between the members of the Obama family was palpable and helped make them seem down to earth. I like her! She seemed smart and more articulate than our current President.

Maybe because we had just seen Ted Kennedy, but the story of ho her parents encouraged her to give back and be of service to her community reminded me of the Kennedys.

FOX News (I had to check it out) called it a "wasted night" (Chris "the tool" Wallace) and kept calling it a speech to quell the fears of Obama's "exoticism". Aigh.

I felt hopeful and scared- scared that, perhaps, our country is still so racist that no matter what the Obamas say and do, a huge number of people will always seem Barack as "exotic" and would never, ever vote for him. I hope we've moved beyond that. We'll see, because if Obama loses, that will be why. Fear will have trumped hope, again.

Amazing!

I was blown away. She had such emotion and poise and conviction. It just came off as incredibly sincere and REAL. I couldn't wait to hear what she said next. You got a total sense of how strongly she believed what she was saying, and in the work they've done in the past and truly, I can't imagine her doing a better job.

Memorable, important and I so hope people were listening.

I'm also thrilled that she memorized every episode of the Brady Bunch as a kid. Now THAT'S the kind of First Lady I want. YES!!!

Michelle's speech

It was a good speech, well delivered. A bit over the top with the schmaltz at the end. But Americans seem to love schmaltz no? I mean...what was Reagan but 8 years of the stuff lathered on thick.

Effect? Who knows? The entire show is for the 10% in the middle, and I have no idea what floats their boats from one election to the next. All the Obamas can do is put their best effort forward and "hope" for the best.

What was it that Koppelman said?

Oh, yeah.

"I thought she was great, that what she said was exactly what she needed to say, and that she delivered it extremely well. Some people would sound rehearsed giving a speech like this one, but Obama sounded authentic and utterly sincere."

Pretty good summary, if you ask me (and if I recall correctly, you were).

Except, Michelle didn't hit it out of the park--she hit it out of the Solar System.

Look out Voyager! Incoming!

It was up there with Churchill

Or the sermon on the mount. It was the greatest speech ever, perhaps. Even more than that. It was the greatest speech that ever will be given.

Deeply Rarely Has Tears In His Eyes

But this evening he did. Michelle Obama's Speech, what can one say, magnificent, inspiring, connecting the essence of humanity and hope. This speech which spoke of the dignity of man, the dreams of all Americans, their sorrows, passions, successes, and yes once again hopes, was the best speech he has ever heard by a lady- period. It may well be the best political speech he has every heard including those of her husband, better than her husbands best. One almost wonders if she should not be running for the top job instead of Barrack.

Forget about this worry about Hillary, forget about Hillary supporters drifting away. Because no woman who saw this speech could not, not vote for Barack Obama, unless they are simply lame, or selfish, or mean, or mired in greed.

Our nation is fortunate, lucky, I would say blessed if I were religious, to have these two at this time to counter the despair and misery of the Republicans who have been dragging our nation down ever since Ronald 'the rat Reagan. George Bush and Laura, there is no comparison. Nasty-Nancy Regan, with her just say no. This speech was all about just say yes. And John McCain and the Budweiser Queen, only poor and shabby after thoughts.

Hear, Hear for Michelle Obama.

crap.....I started crying

Michelle's speech was moving and beautiful and pitch-perfect. She placed herself and her husband squarely in the middle of the American Experience, conveying an authentic emotional connection that Karl Rove's shady operatives will have a hard time demeaning.

she rocked...

i shed tears...

Michelle's speech

Mrs. Obama spoke from the heart. It is simply amazing that she came from such humble beginnings! She and Barak are such an inspiration to kids from poor and meager households!

No one gave her and Barak their education; they earned the opportunity and paid for it with student loans. When you have to work hard for what you have and it is not passed on to you; you appreciate the results as strong character is being built.

So many disadvantaged kids think that the American Dream is only for "rich white folks".

Michelle is validation of hard work and a good education. She got those values from her parents and she and Barak are passing them on to their kids.

As a Christian, I know one when I see and hear one. Michelle is a Christian mother and will be an inspirational First Lady!

Bravo Michelle and God Bless!!

Great speech but she was still upstaged.

What people are going to remember about tonight was a young kid excited to see her father on a video screen. It was spontaneous and cute and went a long way towards destroying the only narrative that the Republicans had, that the Obamas were a scary, evil family out to destroy America. The middle 10% votes on likability. Well that was an incredibly likable moment for the Obamas and it's such great video that's it's liable to be shown over and over again.

I wasn't sure if there would be any sort of convention bounce for the Democrats this year but if this night is indeed the warmup, it might not only exist, but it could be huge.
