How many homes do you have?

The Politico finally busts John McCain.

The letters thread is now closed.

IOKIYAR (It's OK if you're republican)

Republicans always get graded on a curve by the media.

The real question is:

Where is the McCain winter palace, and how many air conditioned dog houses are there on his wife's entire estate?

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:01 AM

Perhaps...

...Johnny Mac needs Joe Lieberman to remind him how many homes he owns!

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:06 AM

john Sidney McCain III

john Sidney McCain III can't remember how many houses he owns and says you need to make $5 million a year to be rich, and Obama's the elitist.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:08 AM

How many does John Kerry own

Before we go all "White people suck! Huzzah the Revolucion!"

Newsflash for Salon: Rich people own a lot of stuff.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:09 AM

But they only have 1 jet!

Which is only 1 more jet than a homeless person has. So there!

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:12 AM

Good point cat v. romba

Wait, i meant horrible point. I don't care how rich you are, not knowing how many homes you own shows that you are not just out of touch with the American people, but you are out of touch with your own finances! And this guy wants to run our economy? Please.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:13 AM

Don't you read this stuff?

"wounded dear"? ... Surely not as funny as the Democratic prick for Vice-President, but your can't snicker at the APs copy editors if you own didn't catch this error.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:18 AM

I think this is a bit ridiculous.

John McCain is no pal of mine. But, perhaps he and his wife (or just his wife?) own a condominum complex with X number of units, in addition to the homes they use for themselves. So, he took the question quite literally -- and answered honestly because he figured each unit is a "home.". He didn't recall the exact number of "homes."

It is a possibility.

If this is an example of "busting" John McCain and Obama getting "tough," we're in

T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

Ah now, you'd need to drop this topic quickly since media outlets in Europe and the USA are writing about George Onyanga Obama

who's living in a shack in Nairobi while Barack lives in an exquisitely-restored Georgian mansion in Chicago. One of the first lessons we learn as adults is that life isn't fair and that some people inherit a lot of money. When Senator Barack Obama's father died he had five wives, two of them American, and numerous children but he wasn't very provident in giving those children a good start in life. That's far too often the case, unfortunately. Senator Obama was lucky, however, as his mother's parents gave him everything they could for material success in life. C'est le vie!

If he can't remember how many homes he owns...

...how is going to remember which country to bomb next?

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:25 AM

@maureen

Thanks for dropping in with today's tabloid headlines from across the pond.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:26 AM

I can't wait

for the neocon trolls to remind us of the irrelevant "fact" that Obama purchased his one house with help from Rezko.

The important thing is that McCain is a pompous hypocrite who "earned" his lifestyle by marrying an heiress. The fact is that he cannot remember how many homes he owns, while millions of Americans are struggling to hang on to theirs.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:26 AM

I am a small landlord

I guess I know how many units I own. But if had a bunch of buildings I might not be 100% precise.

@MICKI

Watch this: http://therealmccain.com/?utm_source=rgemail

McCain has so many houses that he's lost count. Wow.

My questions is this: Are all those mansions and condos left empty when the McCains aren't using them? I have a feeling these are not rental properties.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:30 AM

Klytus, I'm afraid you're out of touch, though it grieves me to say so.

This is the age of the Internet, for better or worse. Check out the Chicago Sun-Times and The New York Post which, I'm sure you will agree, are not "across the pond". I hope the Lambada classes are going well.

there's more

You left out the truly delicious part of the response from the McCain camp:

"Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"

This is even better than their habit of replying to any and all criticism with "POW"...this is such a non-sensical response that it defies understanding!

Things are definetely starting to change around here...

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:33 AM

wrong again, Cat vs. Roomba

The question was "how many homes,", not "how many rental properties".

I dare say that number is somewhat higher than eight...

Fat Chance

No way will the media engage in "class warfare" (as the GOP will immediately brand it) by covering that. Just as only Democrats are effete and weak, similarly, only Democrats are out-of-touch elitists. The standard isn't applied to Republican candidates, so McCain will get a free pass on that like he always does.

Not able to remember how many houses he owns? It's because of his POW treatment during Vietnam. Leave poor Mad John McCain alone, nasty people! Next topic?

Seriously, they've got it covered. Only Democrats are held to an absolute standard, only Democrats get grilled on that kind of stuff. The GOP is just so much better at playing that game -- the Democrats keep waiting for the media to do its job, while the GOP spoonfeeds their propaganda to the press, who gobble it up.

Obama's going to have to bare his knuckles and hit hard, although the media will be very, very quick to blow the whistle on that, call fouls. They're neither neutral arbiters nor objective observers in this stuff.

The NY Times?

The paper that prints all of the news that's fit to print and fits perfectly at the bottom of my pet parakeet's bird cage? The paper that employs the pundit worthy pap of Will the Wizard Kristol and his amazing crystal ball? That NY Times?

So?

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:39 AM

What's relevant

John McCain is very wealthy and, like most wealthy people, owns multiple properties. No story there.

John McCain married into his money. That's irrelevant to his qualifications for the presidency.

John McCain doesn't know how many homes he has. Well, some might be condos in the same building (is that one home or two?). There's some room for "benefit of the doubt" here.

But a very wealthy man who didn't earn his own money and doesn't know how many homes he owns has no business accusing anyone of elitism. That's the story. Team McCain attacking Obama as an argula-eating elitist opened the doors to this story. They opened the french doors and the bayview windows.

Thursday, August 21, 2008 09:40 AM

The next question: Will McCain cave to the demands of the "religious" right?

If so called "maverick" McCain goes against his gut feeling and rejects pro-choice Lieberman or Ridge as a running mate, the press should conclude, and the headlines should read: McCain caves to demands of religious right!
