What Obama needs most

Beyond readiness to assume the presidency, there are other things Obama needs to consider as he makes his veep decision.

The letters thread is now closed.

Hammer, hammer, hammer

McCain is a target-rich environment. Everything he does and says is wrong, wrong, wrong.

We need someone who is going to talk about the evil EVIL of the Repukeliscum Party for the next 2.5 months. We need an attack dog who will not be cowed by the assholes on the right, and when I say ASSHOLE, I mean reeking shit-filled pustules of offal.

Biden has an ability to do that. I don't like everything about him, but find him to be a good guy in many ways.

attack dog

biden. enough of this nonsense. we need someone to tell it like it is about the right and mccain.

It's unanimous so far!

Biden. Because he's willing to call BS on their crap.

Biden or Sibelius

Biden brings a real sense of outrage about the way Bush has failed on foreign policy and security. Lots of sharp attack potential there. Right now, though, the public is also angry about domestic issues. I think Sibelius might be able to weigh in on that topic with more clout. Also, while there's wariness about how her candidacy might play with the Hillary constituency, she would still have a lot of appeal for women -- and maybe even make the arguments that would bring Kansas along.

Biden's good, but...

He doesn't deliver jack for a state. Delaware is already firmly Blue. He has Foreign Policy cred and he is a good attack dog, but he's also a loose cannon whose mouth has killed more than one of his own presidential campaigns.

Gen. Wesley Clark is not only a good attack dog, but can and has attacked McCain on his home turf - as a decorated war hero. McCain's team found it harder to punch back against Clark when he rightly pointed out that getting shot down over North Vietnam 40 years ago doesn't necessarily qualify one for President. And Clark has shown he can stay on message. And he's reliably progressive.

As for state draw, Clark wouldn't draw a state as much as he would draw a demographic from McCain. I think veterans disenchanted with Bush's policies would flock to a ticket with Clark on it.

Biden

He doesn't back down and can be just as much of an asshole to the right wing as they would be to him. We need that. I'm sick and tired of playing nice with these bullies. The GOP needs to be hammered on their lies and failures and not allowed to weasel away as they've been able to for years.

Biden also offers extensive foreign policy experience- I would go so far as to say he can even outmaneuver McCain on this issue.

Kaine is too much of an unknown, and I feel that Obama is making inroads in Virginia regardless.

Whose that guy with One Arm again?

You know the one who left 3 out of four limbs on the battlefield and had his patriotism questioned.

That's a guy who could tear McCain a new one on the "Hero" issue without fear.

I can't remember his name. Dang it.

That aside, more and more, I'm getting this vibe that it's going to be Clinton. I had this vibe first when I heard the Bill was introducing the V.P., granted it's a good time for him to show how gracious he is by lauding the person who got the job instead of his wife, but that's also a good time for him to seem bitter and unsupportive if he has any pent up resentment (as he seemed to have in his recent interview on the qualifications for president).

It's all good of course, even though I had issues with Ms. Clinton's campaign tactics, as we now see they could have gotten much worse (funny how that came out now huh?) had Ms. Clinton not nobly chose the slightly more elevated road.

She does have a lot of negatives, and no not Bill, mostly her inexperience and lack of a war record, but she's got a following, and she looks a damn sight more capable then either Mondale or Ferraro did in the 80's.

So yeah, that's my statement. It'll likely be Hillary, and if he doesn't go with Hillary, he needs somebody who can Trump McCain's "But I was a POW" whine. So we need either a heavily decorated war hero, who was smart enough not to get captured, or a guy who left a part or two on the field. A fellow POW would be good to, if we have on laying around.

Hey does anyone know where those old 2000 reports on how McCain sold out his fellow POW's in vietnam can be found online?

They were all over the place in 2000 when the Bushies were dismantling their heir apparent, but I can't seem to find them now.

Sauce for the goose as they say.

Hammer Time?

Wesley Clark. If we're skidding inexorably toward a militarized, theocratic police state, might as well have Clark as VP, since he's at least intelligent and can hit back hard against McCain on the military bona fides. Anything less than that would cede too much ground to McCain.

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 08:43 AM

Wesley Clark

For the reasons dastardlydic articulated. Too bad he seems to be out of the running (if he was ever seriously in it).

Biden

I saw Biden speaking on television a while back while sitting around in an airport with nothing else to do. He was intelligent, articulate, and not willing to put up with his interviewer's MSM angling BS. His discourse on foreign policy indicated a far more complex understanding than either McCain or Obama have publicly demonstrated. In a more perfect world, inexperienced Obama might be Biden's VP pick, but if I've got to choose between Obama's VP hopefuls I'll take Biden any day.

Richardson

I still like this candidate. He has the right diplomacy credentials, experience in Washington, and has enough of a bite to do whatever attacking of McSame needs to be done. The New Mexico and Latino connection, along with the Clinton extended family background all help me want Richardson on the ticket.

Biden

For the same reasons as others are giving.

The person who best fits these criteria

Can be a good attack dog and hammer John McCain.

Offers a working-class, rank-and-file appeal to those parts of the coalition with whom Hillary Clinton thrived.

Potentially delivers a state.

Is strong in policy areas where Obama is not.

Even if he formally took himself out, the person who best fits this set of criteria is Webb.
