He intended to say that McCain was not able to hear the current interview. Did McCain hear the interview? We don't know. Did Warren know McCain even have the ability to hear the interview? We don't know. A decently prepped candidate should be able to quickly draw on a prepared answer for virtually any question. He should be able to predict the most common questions based on the interviewer's interests and current events. He should be briefed before each interview on which questions are most likely to be asked. There is no evidence that Obama does this. He has avoided current event questions in the past and seemed unprepared for many questions during the debates. He has to work on that.
Trying to trash Warren over this is pointless, and even harmful to Obama. Obama spoke with Warren in order to reach out to Christians who support Warren but might be willing to vote for him. Calling Warren a liar undermines Obama's efforts to reach out to this group, reinforcing their belief that progressives aren't really interested in working with them. Whether McCain had an advantage or not, this sounds a lot like "sour grapes", and can only serve to undermine Obama.
The commandment you are probably referring to is, "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor," which is a very specific lie. Don't go around saying your brother did something bad, when you know it isn't true.
Can you imagine if there was a commandment against lying?
"Hey, Jim, that sure is an ugly baby! Is your wife still a big fat-ass?"
Calling Warren a liar doesn't make Obama look bad or undermine him in any way. Warren LIED - so he is a LIAR. McCain was NOT in a "cone of silence", he was in his limousine on the way to the church for most of the time Obama was talking. McCain clearly was prepped. It's an Orange County church - and if anyone thinks for one second McCain wasn't prepped is a fool. Warren told a HUGE, BLATANT lie about McCain being in a "cone of silence" - so one has to wonder what else he lied about. And the "oops I didn't know my mike was live before we went to commercial" when he said "home run" to McCain - was, of course, no accident.
It's ... convenient ... that Dan Gilgoff phrased the question in such a way that Rick Warren could honestly say that Obama supporters were "dead wrong".
Maybe I've missed it, but as far as I know, nobody claimed McCain saw the questions, just that he was in a position where he may have heard the questions ... and Obama's answers.
(And the McCain campaign response was just ... weird. Are ex-POWs somehow rendered unable to cheat?)
Warren didn't do his homework. If he had, he would have known that in Get Smart, the Cone of Silence NEVER worked.
Or maybe he did? It's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside a sitcom...
I'm not sticking up for Pastor Rick, but it is possible he thought McCain was ensconced in the Green Room, the cone of silence, because that was the original plan. Plans don't always adhere minute-by-minute to a pre-determined schedule. McCain was delayed getting to Saddleback. End of story. Or should be.
All this finger-pointing begins to look like sourgrapes by the Obama campaign/surrogates/supporters because he didn't do as well as some expected. Let it go already! You'll be doing Obama a big favor.
This church is smack dab in the heart of Republican Country. South Orange County, California. It doesn't get any whiter or more Republican than this place folks! People still drive around with Bush Cheney bumper stickers and are PROUD of it!
This church bought out mega cineplexes so his congregants could take 'sinners' to see Mel Gibson's 'Passion of Christ'. The man knows how to market and his followers aren't going to pay attention to anyone but Rick Warren. It doesn't matter who heard what or who said what, if Rick says it's so, that's all his flock needs to hear.
I don't understand why Warren is not being pressed on the his lie to Obama and the audience. After all, he was lying to potentially the next presidentof the United States. He has no credibility after this and either does McCain. Rules were set in advance and they didn't abide by them. Also, when McCain's spokeswoman stated that it was outrageous to suggest that a former POW (MCCain) cheated, was I the only who noticed (and laughed) that she just said this about an admitted adulterer?
Warren "milking" the media ? Well, of course !
Milking is what evangelists do for a "living". First milk the pathetic, gullible boobs in the mega-congregation of the mega-church in the mega-auditorium, then if the occasion presents itself, milk the public on TV with a fake political "forum", featuring prominently (of course) said evangelist to feed the outsized ego of same, and then, most definitely, if it can be managed (quite easily, given the thrill TV producers get out of featuring egomaniacs like Trump, Murdoch, along with lots of other evangelists), milk the media for all it's worth. Face up front out there on the tube, baby, that what brings in the bucks !
Warren will have had his 15 minutes++ of schmoozing fame and, hopefully, he will then sink back into his customary local milking routine to which he may account for his monetary success, mega-establishment, and mega-ego large enough to block out the sun, even in CA.
Honest religion ? Spiritualism ? Forget it. Warren is "driven", to borrow a quaint term by the evangalist/author himself, by two, and only two, forces: EGO and $$$$$. Hard to say which comes first.
Now praise the Lord and pass the collection plate for a silent collection. No coins, checks, or credit credit cards accepted in the mega-church, mega-auditorium itself, but most faithfully encouraged through the medium of the perpetual, continuing, and ongoing fund raising campaign intended for larger "gifts" to this indespensible "ministry". It's a free (800 number) call. Phone, Internet, and other contact information given below. Have your check book or credit card ready. So call now ! The Lord is waiting.
