wife's cancer was in remission

..."(John Edwards) made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter."

See? That makes it okay. What’s the big deal?

AncientAssyrian, worry about your candidate's practically Republican platform

rather than bringing up something no one's talking about. Gee, talk about hate.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:34 PM

You were right

Alex, I believe it was you who initially said that the National Enquirer's story should not be quickly dismissed. I'm very sad that you were proven right.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:34 PM

Uh oh

guess its time to go make some popcorn.

Snort

Thanks for restoring my faith in the National Enguirer.

See, I told you guys that the story about the amazing healing powers of ketchup was true!

@ArthurDental

Gee, talk about naivete'. Grow up, hon.

As for "my candidate" -- he's not perfect, I'm the first to admit it. Be he doesn't deserve the drubbing he gets from the ersatz Democrats here at Salon, including its editors.

And just watch, you'll see I'm right. Salon's going to spin it into an anti-Obama opportunity, right along with the right-wing media.

crap

crappity crap crap. I thought this wasn't true, but it is. So...crap.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:45 PM

Edwards

Why do we have to spread this.

The msot Ironic story I heard.. Bill Clinton is going to speak at the convention to replace Edwards because of this scandle.

HMMMM

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:46 PM

Joan's take

Scenario 1: Edwards is not invited to speak at the convention

I'm somewhat concerned about the message this sends about transparency and remorse. Here we have John Edwards coming clean after a hounding by the tabloids and blogs, and what is his reward? To be rejected by Barack Obama, a purported proponent of a "new kind of politics".

Scenario 2: Edwards is invited to speak at the convention

I'm somewhat concerned about the message this sends about men's responsibility to their wives. After making Hillary Clinto the target of a constant stream of sexism during the primary campaign, is this insult to another political woman, Elizabeth Edwards, something Obama should be contemplating? I don't know, but the question should be asked.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:46 PM

FUCK FUCK FUCK!

I am so angry at this.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:49 PM

John Edwards, mmm mmm good

He never loved Rielle (that makes it better?).

His relationship was over long before her baby was born (at least 7 months).

He just happened to be visiting this woman he didn't love and with whom his liaison was over (and the baby that's not his) in secret from his wife.

Go on, Enquirer. He's making your job too easy.

@marcparis

Bingo. You have Joan's number, clearly.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:51 PM

I'm waiting for everyone who smears Bill Clinton over

Lewinsky to start on Edwards......I'm waiting?

Thats right, Edwards has been Obama's little attack dog so that deafening silence I hear must be coming from the self righteous Obama supporters.

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:59 PM

Here ya go, @sonofloud

I think Bill Clinton's greasy little episode with Lewinsky was tawdry -- his lying about it was inexcusable, and the whole thing was a pretty fascinating snapshot of a very flawed, self-absorbed egotist.

And as for Edwards...it's tawdry, and inexcusable, and clearly, if he was trying to run for president knowing that this was hanging out there, then he is quite self-delusional to boot. And add to that the fact that he did this to a wife who was struggling with cancer -- well, he's pond scum as a husband. You also really have to wonder what sort of intellect the fellow has if he honestly thought he could keep this undercover. That's truly moronic. I thought he was smarter than that, but then I thought Bill Clinton was smarter than that.

So this Obama supporter has nothing good to say about Edwards right now, except I'm glad he pulled out of the race.

And you, as a self-appointed self-righteous Obama hater...how exactly do you plan to spin this into another diatribe against Obama?

Friday, August 8, 2008 12:59 PM

I'm waiting for the Clinton defenders...

...to be about how the Clintons are victims of someone somehow.

I'm waiting for everyone who smears Bill Clinton over

Lewinsky to start on Edwards......I'm waiting?

Thats right, Edwards has been Obama's little attack dog so that deafening silence I hear must be coming from the self righteous Obama supporters.

-- sonofloud

Oh, never mind. (And isn't sonofloud impatient? The story's been out for something like 5 minutes. What does he expect?)

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:05 PM

LOL

Bill has a one night stand and it's some how worse that Edward's on going affair.

Not to mention Edwards has denied it up until this point when it finally becomes too big to ignore. This only highlights the fact that he admitted it because he got caught, not because he wanted to be honest.

The way the Obama camp finds fault in everyone but themselves truly amazes me....kind of reminds me of the current resident in the white house.

so quickly.

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:07 PM

a moral man

So, adultery, lying, betrayal and hypocrisy is okay, but gay marriage is against John's deeply held religious beliefs.

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:08 PM

Recent studies reveal that 45-55% of married women and 50-60% of married men engage in extramarital sex at some time or another during their relationship (Atwood & Schwartz, 2002 - Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy)

I love how self righteous and aghast everyone is. It's not like her body was found in his trunk. Give the guy a break. We are all flawed in our own little ways, his flaw just happens to be a very common one.

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:09 PM

@sonofloud

Just let us recover from this a little, will you? This is rather fresh, and it hurts. I suppose we should all be used to the "feet of clay" thing, but sometimes you just don't see it coming.

I probably wouldn't have much to add to what AncientAssyrian had to say, though.

I just hope that he and his wife can come to a place of mutual understanding, and that forgiveness will be possible.

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:09 PM

Not just self-delusional

As a former Edwards supporter, I'm angry with the man for throwing his hat in the ring when he knew he had this in his closet. Wasn't one Lewinsky scandal enough for the country?

Friday, August 8, 2008 01:10 PM

Sad

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool republican who wouldn't vote for Edwards under any circumstances, but I do feel sad about this as I had a hell of a lot of respect for Elizabeth Edwards. She seems like a real genuine and down-to-earth individual.

Why folks jump the fence and screw around on their spouses varies widely, I guess. The personal lives of our politicians is really none of our damn business, but we have rationalized it as an unyielding part of our "right to know" as if who these people screw is somehow vital to our national security. It truly is the worst after effect of Watergate.

So very sensitive elements of another candidate's personal life gets sensationalized and a long suffering spouse gets to undergo a round of public humiliation.

The price we pay for a free press gets more expensive by the day.
