Judge says Bush aides must comply with subpoenas

The ruling sharply criticized the Bush administration's argument that senior administration officials are immune from congressional subpoena.

The letters thread is now closed.

Useless

Bates did say in his ruling, however, that Miers and Bolten could assert executive privilege regarding specific questions or documents; he only barred a blanket assertion of immunity

OK, so how long will it take to get to the bottom of anything when each answer is obtained only after a multi-year detour through the courts?

Privileged Executive

Bates did say in his ruling, however, that Miers and Bolten could assert executive privilege regarding specific questions or documents; he only barred a blanket assertion of immunity.

Seems like the way the Bushies would get around that would be to simply assert "executive privilege" line-by-line, then. Just have it come up with every specific question or document, and thus it ends up a cozy blanket of immunity, assembled one thread of inquiry at a time. Same difference?

This administration is going to either go down in history as the worst, most criminal administration to ever get away with it, or else the harbingers of a new age of American executive dictatorship masquerading as representative democracy.

Line-by-line

Yes, but even those assertions can be challenged.

This is still significant. It may seem like a simple thing, but now we at least have a ruling that says if you don't at least answer the subpoena, it doesn't matter who you are. You can be charged with Contempt of Congress. It's an important chip out of the wall of zero-information the Bush Administration constructed in its attempt to roll back limitations on executive power to the Nixon era.

Poetic justice (I hope)

Bring it on! I'd love to see ALL the Bushies in stripes and fluorescent orange suits!!!

Executive Privilege Should Be Repealed

Executive Privilege Should Be Repealed.

This Administration has exerted more Executive Privilege than any in U.S. history. Is it simplly because this is not an Authentic Administration? Remember, Bush was originally plased into the office of President of the United States by the Supreme Court. Because of the uncertainty of 911, the People were to told to accept him.

Cheney, to my knowledge, is the only Vice President that decided to place himself into this Office in U.S. history. As a result of their unchallenged placements, we have seen an eroding of almost all of the founding principals and values that we treasure in America.

The Constitution, the acceptable standard of wisdom, honor and integrity of the land, has been ripped to shreads by the the imposed interpetations of the likes of Woo, Gingrich, Bush, Cheney, Alito, and others to foster their private interest.

Now we see these criminals, men and women supposedly of sound mind, having sworn to uphold the order of the Constitution, being immunitized by executive privilege for their unlawful acts, by an unauthenticated President.
