McAuliffe's choice for veep not Clinton?

The former chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign seems to say he wants someone else to be Barack Obama's running mate.

The letters thread is now closed.

Please God....

....let this be the first step in the "She doesn't want it.." campaign.

Why are we fooling ourselves?

It has to be Clinton! Personally, I'm not too sure it's the correct choice, but soooo many Hillary supporters will be alienated if she isn't the veep nominee that it might cripple Obama.

All this talk about other contenders is just free publicity for them. I had never even heard of this Tim Kaine guy, so the free publicity worked on me.

I don't see the hardcore bible-thumpers voting for a guy named "Cain", anyway.

When did the VP choice become "personal"?

He's not marrying this person, he's running for office with them. He's not choosing a date for the senior prom - he's choosing the person who will replace him if he is elected President and can't fulfill his duties. This is a professional decision he needs to make, not a personal one. He needs to choose the person who is most likely to earn him the office of President. In all honesty, if I had my say, he wouldn't pick the person at all - we would get to vote on them independently. But the system dictates otherwise. Nonetheless, past Presidential candidates made decisions for VP based on electoral qualifications, not personal feelings.

Amazing how quickly Hillary has dropped off the radar!

Please pay attention to the fact that most American voters will not start paying attention until after the VP choices, after the conventions. Hillary may as well not even exist now for most Americans, including my own brother.

Whoever the choice may be, that person will seem like a fresh face, even Hillary. Maybe that is why Hillary is staying under my metaphorical radar now. Six weeks of invisibility virtually equals rebirth.

Whatever you do, Barack, do not pick a rookie. No Senator Eagleton, no Rep. Ferraro, no Dan Quayle, no Admiral What's-his-name-the-poor-guy-who-ran-with-Ross-Perot.

oy vey

Clearly what Alex is doing here is trying to insinuate that one of Clinton's top supporters doesn't even have the confidence in her to declare that she would be the best VP.

But obviously, McAuliffe knows that Clinton doesn't want the job (and let's be real, why would she want to play second fiddle to the guy whose underhanded tactics cost her the election), and he's talking about the party's best bet for a VP, not his own choice, as the article headline misleadingly suggests.

That's VERY funny!

Kaine has only been governor since 2005. Most of his experience is in city government.

Here is one of his pet projects which should rile gun owners and those concerned with racism in the law both:

Furthermore, he opposes abortion.

Rosenkavalier

Give it a break. She ran a poor campaign and was up against a terrific politician. Hillary has too much baggage...Bill.

McAuliff said right after the election she was not seeking the VP slot. I think he shit down the Lanny Davis whining too.

Why would Hillary want to be VP she would have more power in the Senate. She is already started raising money for a 2012 Seante race.

Obama unlike McCain does not need a VP to help him win.

Bidnes pro-chocie record

Joe Biden only has a 65% rating from NARAL on choice.

Thursday, July 24, 2008 05:58 PM

It's going to be a governor

I don't think Obama will pick a fellow Senator. I'm guessing it will be a governor, and given how competitive Virginia will be Kaine would have to be on the short list anyway.

I'm guessing Richardson, Sebelius, and Napolitano are on it too, with Brian Schweitzer as a dark horse.

I've always considered the "possibility" of a Clinton VP slot as a PR move ...

I can't believe she would really want it (I suspect as a old warhorse she would take accept it if asked, for the "good of the party") ...

Mostly I can't figure out how TeamObama could possibly explain to the black community the presence of THAT (racially insensitive) WOMAN and her (racist) HUSBAND on the ticket.

I just don't think that THAT sort of compromise would sit well. They might begin to wonder about things.

@ bernbart

I don't think it will be Biden, although Obama could use some help from him on Iran. I like Biden for State.

But aren't you a little confused. No one but you has mentioned Biden in connection with choice.

@ bernbart

Since you are posting how NARAL rates people, why don't you tell us how they rate Kaine?

TERRY, YOU'VE GOT IT RIGHT -- BUT IT SURE TOOK A WHILE

Hillary Clinton would be a terrible choice for vice president, for any number of reasons -- not the least of which would be her fawning over McCain's "experience" as a military man, or a foreign policy wonk, while denigrating the man who heads our ticket. Her words are going to infect the campaign when McCain's people replay them, of course, but at least she won't be there as an example of very, very old-style "political" expedience. I'd favor John Edwards, or Joe Biden, or Chris Dodd; all of whom would be assets (though the loss of Dodd or Biden in the Senate would be painful.) But listening to Terry McAuliffe's advice, just like continuing to trot out Jim Carville, is an exercise which ought to be avoided. The folks who continue to "advise" -- after they have helped lose campaigns -- ought to withdraw gracefully and quietly.

I'm not the first or will I be the last to say this

but this whole Hillary thing for Vice President is a manufactured wet dream by the right-wing.

1.) Just because many think (including myself) that Hillary would have made a fine chief exec that does not mean by any stretch that she would be a good choice for V-President... for this Presidential candidate.

2.) The only reason Hillary would be interested in VP is as a spring board to president. It remains to be seen if a high profile congressional career wouldn't accomplish that goal just as well. (or better)

3.) There are many, many choices for VP that would do a much better job of complementing Obama than HRC. If Hillary were the candidate for pres Obama would not be a good choice for her VP either. Both would need a southern vote getter with strong defense and foreign policy background (God! I though Jim Webb would have been a great choice for either one... but alas). (Ironically a good choice for VP for Obama would most likely bee a good choice for Hillary's VP because that person would shore up both of their short comings and hopefully not upstage the party's nominee for president)
