He should be canceling the campaign. Hey Alex, how about a little reporting on how CBS "cut-and-pasted" McAce's remarks to Katie Curick. That fiasco needs to be blogged to death.
Let's face it. I think the Republicans have backed the wrong horse on this one.
Any chance of a floor fight from Romney or Hucabee delegates pressing for converts at the convention?
There are times I think McCain might be trying to throw the election, and others when I think he's just not that slick.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy about this turn of events, but I can't imagine a great deal of republicans being so.
That much should be obvious by now. He's just making stuff up and when he's called on it, he gets belligerent and accuses his opponents of being unsupportive of the troops. Sound like anyone else we know?
They are probably trying to get McCain more practice to sticking to the script...he is not as easy to manage as Bush was who would just repeat talking points no matter the question.
What's funny is they whine that the national newscorp is following Obama around to get interviews, and now they limit the national news from getting to get interviews from him.
He cancelled because the press stopped bringing him donuts and coffee.
And those guys from Politico haven't brought Mrs. McCain flowers since the beginning of the summer.
It would seem that what McCain misstates is less important than the way he says it. Why not more commentary on what it reveals about his character? When McCain unceremonously dumped Phil Gramm after the "whining" comment, why no question about what that revealed? Most reasonable politicians would have found some reasonable excuse for such a poorly chosen characterization of what most have said was probably not too inaccurate. Instead, McCain was vicious with his Ukraine ambassador comment. Is this the personality we want fingering a button?
I hope Klein's commentary today gets that issue more exposed.
No one could have predicted!
I'm not trying to be "ageist" here, but these continuing gaffes sure look to me like the sign of a guy who's slipping a bit, as -- quite frankly -- we all do/will as we get into our 70s.
This doesn't mean people in their 70s should be put away, but perhaps they should rethink whether they still have the tools to hold what is often described as the most important job in the world.
I remember when Reagan was running for his 2nd term. My grandfather was exactly his age, and Papa was a sharp guy (undoubtable smarter than old Dutch). But he said that he was well aware of how much he had lost over the last couple years, and said that nobody at that age should be president, period. Anyone with and older parent or grandparent knows that the slips are minor at first, but over a couple of years, it picks up speed.
We've weathered 8 years with an idiot as president, let's pass on a guy who is, if not fully over the hill, certainly has started his walk down a rapidly steepening slope.
clearly mccain is just dumb. i didn't think he was stupid, but this pretty much proves it.
how embarassing this must be for the republicons...
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
It's aggravating to see McCain constantly accusing Obama of minimizing the "success" of the surge while he himself is guilty of minimizing or denying every factor that argues against our continued involvement in Iraq.
What's even more aggravating is to see the media constantly minimizing McCain's numerous gaffes and misstatements. They created the image of him as being strong on foreign policy and now they can't give it up, even while evidence to the contrary piles up.
This is not a big deal. Remember Obama claiming 57 states? Or that a tornado killed 10,000 people? Or that his great uncle liberated a concentration camp while serving with the US military, only to have it come out that he never had a family member serve in the military, and the said concentration camp was liberated by the Russians? Anyone remember any of that? Didn't think so.
The point is that the surge is working, and Obama should be a little bit careful about explaining it away, because he's starting to look like he would rather have the US lose in Iraq so that he can say "I told you so."
Is it too sadistic to be looking forward to the debates? I think the risk for Obama is to be accused of being arrogant and disrespectful because, on the substance, he's going to wipe the floor with McCain, and if Obama pushes too hard, everyone will feel sorry for McCain.
If you're still here, I want to ask you the question I've been hoping the news media would ask McCain or his surrogates.
-Did the surge succeed?
-If so, why are you claiming withdrawl would constitute "defeat"?
-If not, why are you claiming it succeeded?
-If it's contributed to a significant, but as yet unstable and maybe temporary, reduction in violence, is it a little premature to claim "victory"?
McCain keeps hiring more and more of Bush's former team. And now he's acting like Bush. Making "mistakes" to manipulate facts.
Claiming the Surge started "the awakening" is like saying Iran backs Al Qaeda or Saddam had WMD - manipulative lies.
And Mccain needs new dentures - he whistles like the gopher in winnie the pooh when he talks. Can the Republicans use some of those millions to hook the guy up? Unless they want him to sound like a fool.
My mother is McCain's age, and she's the "Chief Executive" of our large family. She's educated, smart and active, has hundreds of social contacts, watches her diet and walks three miles every day. She even has melanoma in remission. Unlike McCain, she has managed to teach herself to use a computer (!). I respect and love her very much and am happy to take orders from her most of the time. But even if she had a bazillion years experience in the US Senate and had been shot down over VietNam I would question her fitness for the office of POTUS because I CAN SEE (and she can see) that her brain is aging. It's a little harder for her to learn new things and info processing and info recall is a bit slower than it was just a few years ago. She's tired at the end of her very active days and wouldn't be the best person to answer that terror call at 3 in the morning. Neither of us has any idea where she will be in 4 or 8 years, but we're not betting she'll be quicker or more able.
At the risk of offending seniors, I think McCain's age could be a big problem. I also think he's been acting like a cranky old man in his campaign, which does not bode well for him, or for us.
