Republicans fear black voter surge in the South

Rep. Adam Putnam worries that black turnout could "swamp" Republicans in down-ballot races in the South. Is he right?

jebbie'sdumb

a distinct whiff of coon dog when jbulldubbledumm's on the thread. but he's not a repuglikan. They're too liberal. he's a confederate.

He ain't jedbglum, he's jedbracist

jed is just a good old boy who hates black guys. I smell racists, and jed's just a racist. Plus a McCain staffer.

The other thing that this bit leaves out is the recent felon re-enfranchisment bill signed in FL. It's possible that 1 million additional voters will vote in FL, and a large proportion will be black.

Makes you shake with revulsion, eh, jed? All them black guys voting? It's a NIGHTMARE for a racist asshole like you.

the 13th amendment

the crackers and fascists that make up today's GOP toadies still opposed the 13th amendment. no surprise they'd be shocked- shocked, I tell you- to have them darkies actually come out in large numbers and vote. Payback's a'comin', and it's a bitch, you racist trolls.

@LABC63

If you're trying to suggest I'm a Republican, you're way off base. I detest idol worship, especially when it is applied to politicians. I hate seeing Democrats fall into the same authoritarian patterns that have allowed the Republican Party to destroy large parts of what makes America good. I would rather see us lose this election than have us win because people believe obvious lies. If people want to vote for Obama, knowing the truth, then more power to them. There are good reasons to vote for Obama. There are no good reasons to idolize him. We chose the wrong candidate from a large field of right choices.

OOPS. POSTED BEFORE I READ, I FEAR

And once more, I am humbled and honored to find myself on the same page as the always smart and always civil deloresflower. All I really added to the mix was crankiness.

THIS SUPERCILIOUS SUPERIOR MEME IS JUST BS

Honest to Pete! Sen Obama will win GA, NC, and VA. Sen Obama's campaign will mount an impressive GOTV effort and will secure a massive majority of the GA, VA and NC black vote. Sen Obama will also win a significant, significant percentage of the white GA, NC and VA vote. I too respect Schaller much, but not the latest horse he's whipped into the ground. Sorry, babe -- the south is not made up of unreconstructed toothless racists any longer, and attrition is taking care of those remaining. The NC high-tech and academic population and growing affluent young white VA suburban population did in the primaries, and will again in the general, turn-out in force for Sen Obama; Atlanta is fast growing into its (formerly) over-rosy title of "The City Too Busy to Hate." "The Blacks" (ooooooh,scary! oooooh, conde-fucking-scending!) will not "win the south" for Sen Obama, the maturing south will learn all us fancy-pants superior northern "liberals" (close-minded, static class-based judgment is not to my mind very liberal) a thing or two about genuine growth. Drop the inherently racist and classist tripe, willya? It. Is. Unbecoming.

McCain's Problem

Re: "Based on your pervious comments, I'd say you can help fill those blanks in. Sad that you never have as much "insight" about McCain's problems, isn't it?"

The problem with McCain's "problem" is that the reporting media, which John McCain refers to as "his base" can be counted on to give Saint John Free Pass on any of his problems: reporting them for only one day, or not at all, while simultaneously repeating every negative about Barak Obama for weeks.

After all, John McCain is a "Maverick" and "Straight Talker", isn't he?

Is it cloudy? No, it's jebglum...

They only need to provide doubts. People will fill in the blanks with their fears of Muslim's.

@Philadelphia Steve

It won't be race. The right knows that the more they refer to race in anything resembling a negative manner, the more votes Obama will get from people who oppose negative references to race. What we'll see is more of what is already happening. A whisper campaign that quietly raises doubts about Obama's Muslim heritage and feeds those doubts with questions about his patriotism. They only need to provide doubts. People will fill in the blanks with their fears of Muslim's.

white conservative disgruntlement

Playing the race card is exactly what the Republican national committee will do. The best way to counter white conservative disgruntlement is to inflame race hatred with "Blacks are coming to rape your daughters" the same way they have used "Muslims are coming to forcibly convert you" on Fundamentalist Christians.

If Republicans combine it with voter intimidation programs (led by all those Loyal Bushies in the Justice Department), it will also work.

@stackydacky

You must live in Augusta, my friend...I recognize the racial makeup and politics of our venerable Commission! I volunteered to register voters on 4th of July with the Obama campaign and it WAS a fairly diverse group. I encountered only one asshole on the street and though the Chronicle reported that we registered about 90 voters, I think it was more. By the way, I'm a middle-aged white woman.

I'll be driving folks to the polls come November.

@stackey-dackey

I ran into that enthusiasm with a phone call from an Obama supporter. He called before the California primary, identified himself, and I promptly told him that he was wasting his time calling me, but he kept going. He seemed quite confused and hurt that I didn't want to listen to him tell me why they were promoting Obama. I was polite (I always am to phone solicitors, unless they are rude), but I still felt like I was kicking a puppy.

So.... being black might be an advantage?

Isn't that sort of like saying that Obama is lucky that he is black? No, actually that is exactly like saying that Obama is lucky to be black.

@ porsadgai – I Get Where Your At …

I am pissed about the FISA vote. Reid and Pelosi deserve most of the blame as they’ve had multiple opportunities to kill this thing or at least push it out to after Jan 09 when a solid majority and Dem President could pass a superior bill and THEY decided to push it through now (they may have voted against it, but they could have stopped it if they truly felt it was a bad bill).

Obama let a lot of people down yesterday.

But we can still work to try and get better Dems into office. The Christian Right did not spring into being over night; they spent decades working at the local levels to get candidates they liked into power. They were patient.

We’re going to have to be patient too. And yes, it sucks, especially after a day like yesterday. But that means we have to knuckle down harder to get true progressives into office.
