Washington state Dems agree to change "Sopranos" ad

After a complaint from a local Italian group, the party apologized for an attack ad directed at a Republican candidate that featured the theme song from "The Sopranos."

The letters thread is now closed.

Why I am Not a Democrat, Part XXXXIV

Yes, they do know how to sling sleaze as well as the next guy. Lesser of evils. Go, IRV!!

What a great ad!!!

The Washington State Dems should have told the Italian whose-itswhats to shove it.

We need more of this. They are sleazebags and need to be called out at every turn. I hope they just change the music and run the ad again. But, of course, someone else will grab their pearls and fall on the fainting couch because that's what the whiny ass titty baby rethuglicans do.

I've got a better idea.

Don't change the ad at all, and use DNC money to triple the ad buy for it.

Let's be honest; nobody would even blink if the Rethugs ran an ad like this. Hell, it's their modus operandi to run ads like this. If this guy didn't want to be treated like a slimy lobbyist, perhaps he shouldn't have become a slimy lobbyist.

Sleazy?

Oh, heaven protect me from the tender sensibilities of people who can't look ads with decent critical thinking skill.

Better they should change the music to "The Thieving Magpie."

And it would be just as effective.

If he walks like a sleaze...

If he walks like a sleaze, talks like a sleaze and acts like a sleaze then shouldn't the democrats be proud to call a sleaze a sleaze?

I guess not in the time of Barack (lets just shred the fourth amendment) Obama...

Piss off you git!

Wonder if I saw the same ad.

If I wanted to read the paper, I'd buy the paper.

Personally, I think it's a pretty pathetic ad, as much as I support the attack on Rossi.

Any ad which requires you to read the message in order to understand it isn't going to be very effective. And it's really annoying to be bludgeoned with the "mudslinging" soundbite in an attack ad of this nature.

Whatever they say in their defense, the use of the soundtrack was a deliberate Mafia implication, chosen because of the guy's name/ethnicity.

If that's the best those guys can come up with, Rossi doesn't have much to worry about. You'd think this stuff was rocket science with how poorly some folks manage to do it.

Beneath them

What genius thought of this? How about a song about drunk Irish politicians? Italian-American identity is complex. Because the darker side has been explored by Italian-American auteurs, doesn't make it OK to slur a politician with a false stereotype.

Those Democrats who think that this is no big deal ought to ask themselves how they would feel if an attack ad on Nancy Pelosi ran with the theme from the Sopranos. Or a German-American Democrat with Hitler ranting in the background. Or plug in your own ethnicity and think of the worst stereotype included in an ad.

"Woke up this morning...got myself a gun...." This has no place in politics.

Those who say that Dems should be more like Republicans ought to know that my support for Democrats is directly related to how different they are from Republicans.

We should be above this crap.

There is no reason they need to run something like this against Dino Rossi. He's got the deck stacked against him this time. He isn't the incumbent, the state is definitely not in the crapper, and being a republican this year is really not a bonus. I'm from WA and I just don't understand why some dumbass in the dem party would run this. We don't need to. All it does is paint the same as the republican crap you see. Why can't people be honest and not resort to junk like this? Ugh

Maybe they canceled the ad because it sucks?

A one minute forty-three second ad showing newspaper headlines and dates? I felt my consciousness slipping away towards the end.

Kudos to you Alex!

I would expect Salon to hype race-based campaign tactics by Republicans (Willie Horton, "Obama is a Muslim").

Seeing a story about racist Democratic ads like this covered in Salon gives me comfort that Salon actually does care about issues, and doesn't simply slime Republicans, but look the other way when Democrats engage in the same slimy, racist tactics.
