Obama says he supports FISA compromise

But the presumptive Democratic nominee says he will work in the Senate to strip a retroactive immunity provision.

The letters thread is now closed.

I was set to donate more money to Obama

But now I don't see the point. He obviously doesn't need my money, if he -- like the Speaker of the House -- don't feel a need to support and defend the Constitution. Which both of them swore to do.

Appalling

Why did I give this spineless noodle $100 last week? Where is the "change" he's been talking about?

I got it!! He changed his spine into a noodle.

I am very disappointed.

Senator, this is incredibly disappointing. I know that this is cover for November. I know that you think you can't be called soft on Terror if you rip up the fourth amendment.

When are Democrats going to learn that they are an abused spouse? When are they going to get the fact that the Republicans are going to keep calling them soft on terror, or soft on defense, so long as the Democrats cower in a corner, whimper, and give the RNC everything it wants? When are we going to learn that saying "This is the line. This is what we will not do." is going to garner more votes than saying, "meh".

I'm so sick of the Pollsters at the DNC I could vomit.

Disgusted

I don't know what else to say. I don't want to over-react here, but it's a good time to wonder why the hell it is that we support Democrats anyway. They've got a majority in both houses -- why was there a need to pass anything that was unpalatable to them?

As for Obama ... I can talk about being disappointed and disillusioned, but really I'm just feeling hurt. I thought he was better than this.

I'm only half surprised

I would have thought he'd wait until he was actually president before he capitulated on our fundamental freedoms as a people.

Words Cannot Express...

...my repulsion at the deceit and cowardice demonstrated by the Democratic Party in this case.

I really, really wish these people would stop trying to protect me. I would feel much safer.

Obama just lost every bit of my respect and support.

Forever. Period. End of story. How depressing. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. The King is dead, long live the king. This country is over.

sigh. The parties over.

Jesus, what a disappointment.

That's the end of the financial spigot for me.

I'm sure the telecoms would be only to happy to chip in and make up whatever amount I was going to pay going forward. It's too bad I can't ask for a refund.

Cue up ...

Cue up the "Democrats and Republicans are all the same" script from people who depend on headlines for their news.

John McCain thanks you.

We will see...

"...It also firmly re-establishes basic judicial oversight over all domestic surveillance in the future. It does, however, grant retroactive immunity, and I will work in the Senate to remove this provision so that we can seek full accountability for past offenses..."

We will see when the bill arrives at the Senate.

Amazing that the Afghanistan prison break happened just before this came up to vote...it's so easy to scare the Dems.

House vs Senate

Can someone help me understand what Senator Reid is saying when he says "[I]t appears, with the action that the House has taken, that, probably, we can't take that out of the bill."? It's my understanding that the Senate can pass any darn bill it wants, it doesn't matter what the House bill contains, and bills that differ in the House and Senate pass all the time. He makes it sound like the House invoked some secret "Nener nener, can't change this bill, no takebacks" rule. Which is about the right level for rational thought in politics these days.

Is there an email address

For the Obama campaign? I just wanted to tell them that they just lost my support as well as my respect. I have never been this disappointed in a political figure in my entire life.

When I'm President

...I will say Trust Me!

Oh wait, where did I hear that before?

Friday, June 20, 2008 01:41 PM

Distraught

I too am deeply disappointed in Obama. I was hoping for so much more. The Democrats are doing everything they can to support fascism in this country. They no longer represent the people, but only the corporations.

I will not send any more money to Obama or any other Democrat that supported amnesty for the telecoms that participated in bush's illegal domestic spying program. This is beyond the pale and completely unacceptable. I want my Fourth Amendment rights back!

More collusion with the opposition?

Beware of answered prayers.

Bearpaw has the right idea

I know cynicism makes you feel cool and superior, but let's pause for a moment. The headline is indeed misleading. The retroactive immunity WAS the main problem that most of us had with the bill. Sure, Obama may have overstated the ways in which the new bill is an 'improvement', but he directly stated his opposition to the immunity and said he will try to revoke that while admitting that he may not be able to do so. I don't see how this is evasive or BSing - it would have been more so if he made some kind of grandiose promise to revoke immunity and gotten everyone's hopes up.

One of Greenwald's latest columns spoke exactly of this kind of Manicheanism - the conception is that either you're an "Obamabot" (doesn't using words like that make you feel smart?) who defends everything he does, or one of those people who at every misstep throws up their hands and declares that there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans. Such comments as the ones filling up this board do not even deserve addressing. Why do you post them? Do you think you are being original or clever? Do you think you are doing more than just regurgitating a soundbite that a million others will repeat? Do you even have functining brains, or are your fingers pre-programmed to operate independently?

Let's go over this again for the mentally impaired: Democrats suck. Republicans suck more. Personally, I think Obama sucks slightly less than many other Democrats, but you don't have to agree. There is nothing more to be said. So until you can post an original thought, please save your little tantrums, do everyone a favor and STFU.
