Barack Obama justified opting out of public financing in part by citing the specter of independent GOP attack groups, but the threat is overblown.

I'm a strong Obama supporter and I was seriously disappointed by his public financing backtracking. All of you that are getting so pissed because he reversed his position need to take off your rose-colored glasses and actually look at this decision. Did he ever promise to take public financing? No. But did he give the appearance, over and over again, that he would? Hell yes he did.

This is "change we can believe in" and all that shit. Not another four years of splitting hairs on what the person actually said versus their intent. Boosh never actually said Iraq was responsible for 9/11 but he essentially said that over and over, as did his minions. Obama has every right in the world to do what he did but he 1) shouldn't have made an issue of public financing to begin with and 2) shouldn't have offered a bullshit excuse for not doing so now. Alex is completely right that he should have worded it differently. "Words have meaning" and all that.

That said, I was telling my girlfriend about this last night (also an Obama supporter) and her response was that she couldn't care less. But for people that already have issues with Obama, he opened himself up to a lot of criticism both through his decision and its explanation.
