Obama: "I think families are off limits"

Barack Obama says he's disappointed that his opponent didn't help come to the defense of Michelle Obama, but the McCain campaign says the same thing about him.

The letters thread is now closed.

The McCain campaign?

Not entirely honest?

It would be difficult to express in words the depth of my disillusioned surprise.

Families

We can expect the same treatment of Barak Obama's family as John McCain himself received in 2000: Slimhy attacks on the family by "independent" parties, with "above-the-fray" innocence on the part of the candidate himself.

Of course everyone knows that the campaign and the smears are linked, the coordination of comments made that clear.

John McCain was enraged when it was done to him. Apparently he has changed his mind on that, considering the samepeople from the Bush 2000 team are guiding his campaign now.

But then, slimy, personal smears are what it means to be a Republican. That is what they do and what they are. Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter are not aberations: They are the norm, the heart and soul of the party in fact.

Sure *WE* expect Republicans to lie

The Democrats need to do a good job of getting other potential voters to expect that too. Hell, the GOP did it to Al Gore, admittedly with a cooperative media, so hopefully the Democrats can get it across when the Republicans are actually lying.

Unfortunately, I kind of expect another Democrat who tries to be fair and honest while he gets hit over the head with the proverbial bar stool. Hopefully, that won't be the case.

Philadelphia Steve

I would quibble that the entity known as the GOP possess either a "heart" or a "soul" in fact. It is nothing more than an amoral organization whose only purpose is to possess power and enrich its selected "entitled" members at the expense of the "others" both internal to its camp and those outside of it.

Both of them are being dishonest

McCain did in fact say that wives should be off-limits several times, which is about as much defense as I would expect from an opponent.

But yeah, I haven't seen anything one would call an "attack" on Cindy from the DNC nor Obama's campaign.

That being said, when Michelle's up there talking about policy, she's going to get attacked just like any other politician.

Outer Limits

Obama's clueless if he thinks his wife should be "off limits". She's out there actively campaigning for him, not just going along for the ride. Obama's been given enough 'free passes' by the media. The same standard should apply to McCains wife if she does the same type of work. If so, they're fair political game....Let her defend herself, she's supposed to be an adult. I didn't hear Hillary whining that Bill should be "off limits"..It sounds like a convenient sexist double standard to me.

Bait and switch

Sure it sounds off topic but think about how many times you've heard "gay marriage is destroying traditional marriage" or "I'm a christian and I'm a vicitm of persecution". This is the same way you infuse bullshit into any and every response; the Republican way! Try it at home today!

Cake is not a dual purpose foodstuff.

In 1990, Hillary was fair game, because she was out campaigning for Bill and she was actively attacking the policies of opponents. In 2000, Laura Bush wasn't, because her campaigning was limited to, for the most part, smiling in the background. If Michelle Obama doesn't want to be brought up, then she needs to step back and not be publicly campaigning directly as she has been. If she doesn't want people attacking her, then she can't speak out against McCain.

Now, if people want to attack her for being a strong, independent-minded, intelligent woman, then I hope that everyone is watching that and thinking about what it means. The GOP seems to be frightened of powerful women. With the exception of Rice, who has seemed at times to have a bizarre fascination with her husb...I mean Bush, what powerful women are there in the Bush administration? There are only 16 women Senators, by my count, and of them, only 5 are Republicans.

but then

it was ok to make remarks about Bill Clinton during HRC's campaign?

It seems to me that all the spouses involved are actually involved in the campaign, and therefore open to criticism for their words and deeds.

But that doesn't mean people can say anything they want about spouses. And libelous smears should be condemned by all sides.

Minor children should be "off limits" (unless they are directly involved in something newsworthy, ie killed, kidnapped, rescued). Kids have no control over their parents' careers, and little defense against smears.

WHANNNNNN...WHANNNN...

somebody get Obama some CHEESE to go with that WHINE!

HE'S DISAPPOINTED? HE'S DISAPPOINTED? I'm disappointed about alot in this country right now, but John McCain not defending Obama's wife IS CLEARLY NOT ONE OF THEM.

Tell Obama to freakin' get real, grow up, and get over it. He didn't come to Clinton's defense while his team and the media skewered her, day-after-day.

neither Cindy nor Michelle are or will be elected officials.

Fact: whoever becomes President this Fall it needs to be said that NEITHER CINDY NOR MICHELLE can have any say on policy and are not legally allowed to be weighing in on policy except as they discuss as PRIVATE Citizens and make that abundantly clear. Whoever I I vote for , I am adamant that the spouse of an elected official is NOT an elected official by proxy. If either Michelle or Cindy want to be present or weigh in on policy issues then go get elected. Otherwise stay OUT of meetings etc. And, if Hilary Clinton became President that same would apply to Bill. So it is not "afraid of a strong women" bs - the fact is a spouse is NOT the elected official and cannot act like one by proxy.

Simple answers to simple questions

Question: How can you tell if a Republican is lying?

Answer: Look and see if his lips are moving.

Dangerous Game to play

Sad but it looks like the GOP playbook is out in full review with it's usual half-facts, truths and inuendo.

Attacking a candidate's spouse is borscht, but after watching what Rove and co. whispered in the winds back in '00 why should anyone be surprised....Frankly, I'm surprised at McCain because both he and wife carry some baggage and her historical "problems" with perscription drugs are hardly a secret.....
