MoveOn, AFSCME hit McCain on Iraq

The groups' new ad goes for voters' emotions, and targets John McCain's comments about staying in Iraq for 100 years.

The letters thread is now closed.

MoveOn,AFSCME

I saw the ad today. Its obviously meant to appeal to womens' emotions, (as if we don't use our minds to make decisions), but as a woman, I found it insulting.

What group that Might support McCain does the ad appeal to?

That's the problem with almost all Democratic ads, they lack a target demographic that matters.

Preaching to the choir just wastes money, and does nothing to help you win in the end.

Not only that, but the timing is horrible. McCain is running positive ads, Obama wants to opt out of public finiancing, and to do that his argument is that he needs funds to counter 527 ads that will be run against him. The problem is, so far almost all the 527 negative ads have been against Mccain, and way to far ahead of the primary to really matter.

It's not a choice..

It's a chump?

Why be disingenuous?

In 2004 I donated hundreds to MoveOn.org, but no more. Ads like this twist McCain's words, and only validate the same behavior from the GOP. Firstly, McCain was referring to peaceful situations such as our presence in Japan, Germany or Saudi Arabia, and did not refer to the day-to-day attacks that are currently ongoing towards our troops. Secondly, we have an all-volunteer army, and so the woman's baby doesn't have to serve as an adult. Thirdly, equating the image of an innocent baby with an adult is a disingenuous anachronism, much like the phrase, “It’s not a choice, it’s a child”.

Improvised explosive diapers

Show a bunch of GIs with helmets on so you can't see their faces. Show them dodging IED's, mortars, searching people at checkpoints, carrying wounded buddies etc.

Then show them taking off their helmets to reveal.....CGI baby heads.

Narrator: "If John McCain is elected, today's babies will be tomorrow's Iraq casualties."

----------

Okay how about this:

It's 100 years in the future. The last U.S. military base is finally being shut down in Iraq. There's a big banner at the top that says, "Happy 100th Anniversary, Camp Fallujah!"

Soldiers are celebrating with party favors and tin cups of champagne. The music from M*A*S*H is playing.

Then pan back quickly to a wide shot of the entire earth....a charred, barren wasteland.

Narrator: "Thanks, John McCain. Thanks SO much."

@Xrandadu Hutman

It's the future. An old woman is about to blow out 100 candles on her cake at a sparsely attended birthday party.

Woman:

"There ought to be a whole lot more children and grandchildren and greatchildren here, you sonofabitch." She thumps her cane at the camera and bellows: "THANKS, JOHN MCCAIN."

@ AlecsMom

That's right, hail Hitlery! It is a shame that Move On decides to take the low road instead of simply hammering on John McCain and his record of flip-flops or the fact that he mistakenly refutes his own policies publicly without even seeming to realize it. How about Putin, the “president of Germany”? There’s plenty of truth around to be exploited before resorting to “don’t kill my baby”..

Easy to parody

Get a mom and a crying baby. Have her talk about how "difficult" the baby is. Then have her say, "John McCain wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years. If he wants Alex, well....would you mind taking him NOW?"

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 01:18 PM

Any idiot knows ...

"Any idiot knows McCain does not want 100 years of war...". True enough and I think this ad is likely to appeal only to those of us who are already pro Obama. Speaking of idiots, anyone with any sense should know that we are not in Iraq to protect innocent Iraqis. There are totalitarian regimes all over the world that we not only tolerate but do business with (as Cheney did when he was with Halliburton). We are in Iraq because the neocons thought they could engender democracy in the middle east and rebuild the region in a way favorable to the US. So far, that plan hasn't worked out so well.

The 100 Years Pledge and "Speaking Truth to Power"

Wow. I was really surprised by the negative reaction to this ad.

I thought it was great. It was to the point. It had a quiet intensity that balanced everyday concerns with McCain's call to "stay the course.". The visual of the mother and baby worked to emphasize the real cost of the war, and given McCain's recent attempts to wiggle out of the 100 years pledge, it reinforced the candidate's promise to stay however long it takes, even if only for another 18 years. Actually, I think it re-addressed the issue of whether or not McCain was speaking literally to whether or not it is worth spending even another year in Iraq, by reducing the timeline from 100 years to the span it takes for a child to become a man.

I think it also has a kind of feminist appeal with the mother, as it were "speaking truth to power." Nicely done.

@sajwan

MoveOn members voted by 70% to back Obama. That's called democracy in action. Don't like it? Don't donate to MoveOn. Don't be a member. This org had every right to support a candidate that had the overwhelming support of their membership. Again, we call that DEMOCRACY. I know, I know. To you, democracy is Hillary Clinton sailing unopposed to the Democratic nomination because, well, she's Hillary, right?

Jump the shark

Keep the same video but instead lip-sync a new voice that compains about how liberals would allow the murder of precious babies like Alex and voila you have a pro-life commercial on the cheap.

Move-on jumped the shark when they promoted Obama in the primaries further fragmenting democrats, stupid move. But they do keep their hard-core base fed with this junk but annoy and disappoint everyone else.

A better Idea

How about showing the baby's of vets who have been born while they are away and have yet to meet their dad or babies and small children who are being left behind by men and women who are being deployed over and over again. I think a much more powerful piece could have been made showing one of the many real and mostly hidden cost of this war.

"slaughtered for nothing"

So I guess if a soldier dies protecting innocent Iraqi lives , then he is "slaughtered for nothing".

And the soldiers that died removing a murderous dictator who had used chemical weapons to kill hundreds of thousands of Kurds and ALSO supported several terrorist groups including Islamic Jihad, well they were "slaughtered for nothing".

And those soldiers that die trying to track down the guys who chopped off innocent people's heads in a propaganda video, they were "slaughtered for nothing" too.
