Dem congressman won't endorse Obama

Oklahoma Rep. Dan Boren says he will vote for Barack Obama, at the polls and the party convention, but that Obama is too liberal for his constituents.

The letters thread is now closed.

You're either on the team or you are off the team

Get with the FUCKING TEAM, Dan. If you're a DEM, you support Barack.

Obama is a centrist, moderate and a realist.

The problem is when you let repuglicans define where the center is William F. Buckley suddenly becomes "one of the most liberal voices in America".

This is bogus repug propaganda and idiots like Boren give credence to the repug smears by issuing statements like he has.

He is carrying the water for the repuglicans and he should be severely penilized by the party (or as much as they are able to) for helping to enable a key smear tactic for the repugs.

is it possible

for a political party to disown one of its own politicians? you know, sort of like a minor securing his emancipation from idiotic parents? i can only echo dataguyx's sentiments.

@gezelligtexas

I read the article you provided a link to (thanks) and while not exactly about the Dan Boren "statement" it does help explain why Boren has acted the way he has...

He's a gutless coward.

The Democratic party needs to cleans itself of worthless empty shirts like this guy. The man does not have the courage of his convictions. If he really thinks Obama is too Liberal then he is a repuglican and should stop masquerading as a Democrat.

Casey wouldn't endorse Clinton in 1992

He wasn't allowed to speak at the convention. To this day they blame it on Clinton and insist he wasn't allowed to speak because he was opposed to abortion, when it was because he wanted to speak at the convention and refused to endorse the nominee. This guy seems slighty less annoying, he's not asking to speak, is he? So, my only question would be, why is it an issue at all, why can't he just show up at the convention and be quiet until then about an endorsement?

But, apparently you can indeed be a Democrat even if you won't endorse the nominee. I didn't see anyone kick him out of the party after 1992.

It's nice to see..

It's nice to see that the Democrats can be bi-partisan with the Democrats.................

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 03:12 PM

Please oh please...

Let the Dems gain more than 9 Senate seats so we can kick Lieberman out of the party and send a signal to the rest of these jokers that to be Democrat means to be progressive.

No, it's not true yet -- as evidenced here -- but it needs to become true!

That's the Oklahoma I remember

I liked it anyway. But I left when I was seven.

I think the enthusiastic support Obama's received in Iowa, which went for Bush in '04, more than makes up for Oklahoma, which will go for McCain anyway.

Why are you making so much of this? Political schadenfreude? Loser's remorse?

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 03:16 PM

Voting for him as a superdelegate...

...and saying you will vote for him IS endorsing Obama. I don't know how else that can be read. If I were this guy, I would have just kept my mouth shut. He has a right to his vote, but his consituents won't be happy with his mixed message.

You presume to speak for others

"WE are much more conservative..." Who are, "We," silly-boy? Speak for yourself. AND you refuse to lead. You hide behind the concept of, "representing."

Baloney! Have normal American guts, and say what you think. Stop with this sissy, "voting for but not endorsing," stuff!

If you lose your congressional seat, it may be because you are a wimpy, word-bandying, line-treading sissy, rather than the fact that you sort-of support Obama. And even if you lose your congressional seat, who cares? One terrified congressman from Oklahoma, one way or another, is no problem.

If you do not like Obama, support McCain. If you cannot bring your sensitive self to take a side, now that the sides have been decided, please quit.

I am not defending Boren

The part of Oklahoma that Boren represents is worse than, well, the worst of West Virginia.

Boren represents the part of Oklahoma called "Little Dixie." A lot of people there really think that the Democratic Party should be the same one it was in 1875.

It is a long story, but an indicted slimy Democratic State Senator from that area brought them so many goodies for so long, they never switched parties. Got that? They are uber right winger Democrats.

Boren has an opponent for his House Seat from the Republicans. And believe me, that place is what most of us would consider Jesus Republican land.

Boren is not really a bad guy, he is in a pickle. Although by most of our standards he is a wuss, go talk to the people he represents. If you think you could represent those people and support a black man for President, well, literally, get a rope.

Not too many African Americans in Little Dixie. (Actually probably ZERO.) And those of you on the coast are fooling yourself to think this does not exist.

Of course it is racist, and of course Boren is an opportunist. But those people want a Democrat in Congress--they don't care how he votes--but that guy better not vote for no 'black man. '

Come walk in ole' Dan's shoes a while. If it makes you feel better, Dan would not have supported Hillary, either.

There are plenty of liberal thinkers in Oklahoma. But this state is always shown as decidedly Republican. It is ironic, but there are actually about half and half. It is just that in Little Dixie they think Democrat is Republican and vice versa.

Never said this place was anything but conservative. They are just confused on who represents them. I actually feel pity for old Dan. He has some unusual people to represent.

Correction

Let me clarify that: Oklahoma is actually about half and half registered Democrats, not liberals. I would be wrong to give anyone the impression that this state is anything put super conservative. And poor. What can I say?

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 03:51 PM

Hmm...

Poor + conservative = rock stupid.

Or masochistic, but I doubt they'd understand that word.

don't feel the tingle up my leg like Chris Matthews

I hope more Democrats like Dan Boren come out and speak their minds. As a centrist Democrat and Hillary backer there is no way I'm voting for our party's ultra liberal Hyde Park nominee. Our wing of the Democratic party gave us Truman,JFK,Carter and Clinton while the "progressives" produced McGovern,Mondale,Dukakis and Kerry...gee who has the better record of electing Democratic presidents? Obama is a product of our corrupt local Democratic party presided over by King Richard Daley so good luck and god bless! Mark Warner,Evan Bayh or Hillary 2012!
