McCain camp debuts new ad with big buy

For its first real general election spot, John McCain's campaign is thinking big.

The letters thread is now closed.

correction DOESNT have much

since he doesn't have much he got exactly what he paid for...not much.

HP

I know perfectly well it not a big buy...i'm not sure how you interpreted anything i said to mean that...i was simply saying that you get what you pay6 for and sine he does have much (3 million) he's got exactly what he's paying for...not much.

That closing still photo...

Could they have found a photo where he didn't look more like Bush? I had to freeze and study it to make sure someone with a sense of humor at the agency (now fired) didn't stick in a picture of W.

Nothing new.

I'll be sure to give him a call if the viet cong ever come back.

And this is no offense to veterans, but military service has little to do with how good of a president you'll be-- even with regard to military decisions. Frankly, not a president in recent history has been worth a damn when it comes to making real military decisions. That's what we have generals for. Frankly the last time politicians made military decisions was, why the vietnam war I believe (excluding current wars of course). And how did that one turn out? Being a pilot is great, but their not hired to formulate strategy and policy. They fly planes. The only requirement of a president we should want is that they listen to the people whos job it is to handle these things in the first place. Frankly, the fact that he has military experience makes me more wairy, simply because he-- and this is going on his I know best attitude-- seems more likely to buck those generals and say, 'I know what I'm doing'. And FYI, he didn't come up with the idea of sending more troops, he's just taking credit for it. And I didn't see him speaking up that loudly in the beginnning when they were firing people for suggesting we would need 300,000 troops or more. In fact he said the war, "will be brief." and that he had "no qualms about our strategic plans." So ad far as I can tell the only braging rights Mccain has is he can say he's smart enough to realize several years into something that the plan isn't working-- just not the foresight to notice it in the first place. Bravo.

He's whining too!

Does anyone else here the whine in his voice? Creepy!

What experience

So tell my why McCain's experience as a POW, stuck in a box, isolated, not able to take part in the world, for so many years uniquely qualifies him to be president?

Friday, June 6, 2008 01:35 PM

Ah, but it's $3M he doesn't have anymore

And not particularly well spent at that.

Maddie

As someone in the business as well I can tell you that $3MM is not a "big buy" when you look at all the states and media markets involved.

Oh, he means Dubya, not Obama

At first I thought he was referring to Obama, but then I remembered Dubya's quote about the Iraq war:

“I must say, I’m a little envious. If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. It must be exciting for you … in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You’re really making history, and thanks,” Bush said.

poor McCain

he's too broke to get good pr and media work done. I feel sorry for him because in this regard, he cannot win without big bucks. In branding and media and pr, you get what you pay for.

Being in this business (sort of) i got my normal daily trade ezine mailing yesterday. the laundry list of top ad and pr agencies Obama is brining on for the general is impressive. Coast to coast, the best in the ad and agency world. Check out the laundry list in AdAge if you want to see it.

People Got Paid to make this Ad?

The text is pretty good but the music and half-in shadows head shot is all wrong. He should have been wearing jeans and causal shirt, shot full body, brighly lit on a solid medium colored background with the nostaligic images playing in the corner. A slighly larger than life McCain looking a bit uncomfortable with the sentimental sounding bio should have strongly undercut with firm talking of the realness of the life and death situations. It could have been very effective at selling him as a realist. Thank goodness his advisors suck and don't undererstand anything about modern sensibilites when it comes to image presentation.

How refreshing to hear McCain finally call Bush what he is

"Only a fool or a fraud would talk tough or romantically about war". Here here. Finally some straight talk :)

Friday, June 6, 2008 11:16 AM

You can't say McCain isn't trying to cut Bush loose

About a milllion YouTubers + John Stewart are going to enjoy juxtaposing "only a fool and a fraud" with images of Bush being both.

But who's the guy at the end of the ad? It's not even vaguely recognizable as McCain.

@ Dash_7

You beat me to the comment. That quote popped into my mind as I was reading Alex's post.

American "Surrender" in Vietnam

If we as a nation had not taken action and gotten out of Vietnam - a scenario that McCain would call "surrender" if it happened in Iraq - then he would still be in the Hanoi Hilton. Right now. Or he would've died there.

Does he not realize that? Why is this never brought up?

And I hope he gets the same traction with his POW story that VP candidate Stockdale did when he ran with Perot. Remember, the GOP laughed at him because he could no longer hear because of his torture at the hands of the N Vietnamese.

So, here we go again with 'flipper' McCain.

He was before the war before he was against it before he was for it.

He was with the President before he wasn't and until he'll need to him to campaign in a red, red state where no one will notice and he'll run and hide from him when W boards the plane.

What integrity!

Whiting the sepulchre

Yikes. I almost feel sorry for him. They obviously had to add the over-the-top violin music because he delivered all that heart-wrenching information with absolutely NO AFFECT. Makes him look like a whited sepulchre, even though I'm betting he really does feel for his father and grandfather. The vast distance between his heart and his words is disturbing.
