Clinton voters warm up to Obama

Early exit polls in South Dakota and Montana show Clinton voters are more likely to support Obama in the general election.

The letters thread is now closed.

Republicans have been voting in Democratic primaries

But even so, in both of the last two states, Obama is already doing better among Clinton's supporters than he did in places like West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. In those elections, nearly half of Clinton's voters said they wouldn't vote for Obama if he wins the nomination.

That's because Republicans have been voting in these primaries.

Two reasons why this Clinton supporter is not switching allegiance

Arrogance and sexism. Story: White male student walks into Comp I tonight, three hours ago, and announces informally but with certainty before class started that "everyone" in the United States is not ready to vote for a female. Later, he changed his tune slightly to say that "everyone" is not ready for Hillary Clinton. In addition to this history major's considerable problem with sweeping generalities, he exhibited some very questionable judgment and taste. Why does a male undergraduate feel fully confident condemning the capabilites of females and supporting the country's lack of acceptance for females in leadership? In front of a class led by a female, one who holds a position of power, as in the power to give him a lower grade? Because, in part, of leaders like Obama who espose old school misogyny and get away with it, winning the Democart Party's nomination even.

Ok. So if it's alright to call unfamiliar women "sweetie," what can we call unfamiliar men? Can we agree on, oh, say, cock bastard? No, of course not. (Please don't bleep me!) The point is sexism in the society makes it more difficult for me as a female leader in the classroom to command respect, and since I don't appreciate the trend, I am certainly not going to support it the voting booth.

(This kid is an arrogant Serbian to boot. I'm just glad he's not in the same class as the woman from Bosnia whose grandmother was raped by Serbs during the war.)

Thanks for the opportunity to vent. Now perhaps I can drive home and pay better attention to the road. Goodnight from Michigan.

Insufficient Evidence

Gina,

I want you to really reconsider your thoughts on this. I say this as a woman, a feminist, and someone who has respect for Hillary Clinton, someone who has defended her for years. I admit I have not been pleased with all things she has done in this campaign. I am quite ready to bury the hatchet with her, and I think Obama is as well. Party unity is all important now.

Your sole evidence that Obama himself is sexist is the fact that he called a female reporter, "sweetie" in a rushed, distracted moment, then promptly apologized to her.

That single faux pas is your evidence that Obama is sexist. Do you really believe that rises to the level of sexism?

What do you say about the evidence that Obama is not a sexist?

Obama has a strong, professional wife, whom he treats with the utmost respect. There have been no "bimbo eruptions" threatening in the background. He got the endorsement of NARAL. He's somehow managed to be in the workforce for years and years without any charges leveled against him of discrimination or sexual harrassment. There is nothing in his record in the Senate that remotely reflects any sexism. He never called Hillary any names or referred to her gender in any way. Ever.

So. If that is your argument for Obama's being sexist: What about John McCain laughing when someone stumping for him called Hillary Clinton a bitch. True, he didn't say it himself, but he laughed. Neither man in that situation ever apologized to women in general or to Hillary.

Bitch. Sweetie. Bitch. Sweetie. Bitch. Sweetie.

So, throw your hands up, don't vote for Obama. That would be the real betrayal of women. If we don't get out the vote for Obama and McCain gets in, then you'll see some serious sexism. I bet you anything that McCain has called women sweetie and far worse.

Gina Livonia on two-word reasons

Two reasons why this Clinton supporter is not switching allegiance...

"obnoxious undergraduate?"

I think you might have gone a little astray. That guy in your class? He wasn't Barack Obama. Obama was somewhere else. Minnesota, I think.

If you don't like your Serbian fellow, there, don't vote for him as president. I'm right with you — I won't be voting for him either. What does Obama have to do with that?

In Need of a Better Example of Sexism

k. So if it's alright to call unfamiliar women "sweetie," what can we call unfamiliar men? Can we agree on, oh, say, cock bastard?

I'm a man so I'm not an expert on all the intricacies of the deep-rooted sexism and misogyny contained in the word "sweetie". However, I have been called "sweetie" many times, almost always by women I didn't know well and have not been offended. If a man called me sweetie I think I'd be offended, wondering if he is being condescending but if he apologized then it'd be no big deal. I've never been called "cock bastard".

Q: Senator Obama, your position on Health Care has raised concerns with some experts...

A: Just a minute, cock bastard.

Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.

Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed.

Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead. She's gone where the Clintons go,

Below - below - below. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out.

This headline is a reach....

Two states that will be red in the fall and 41% opposed in one and a combined 33% opposed in another. Some progress.

CLinton won't CONCEDE because she is a PSYCHO

She'll ride the party into the dirt. This women has NO conscience. Just watch.

@ bilhelm

That is the kind of remark I would expect from you if you are a Republican troll, hoping to sow dissent and acrimony.

It is not what I would expect from a true Obama supporter.

Dear Gina

Please note that Mr. McCain has been recorded calling women cunts.

When you, or any female undergraduate/professor, can't get a legal abortion because of the judges McCain has promised to appoint, please remember the incredibly obtuse, small minded argument you make tonight. Perhaps then you'll know what real sexism looks like.
