Its more than an wonky idea....
It requires wilful suspension of disbelief. For Coburn and others to argue that salvation is in the return to conservative values requires voters to close their eyes and ears to the near unanimous cheerleading by "conservatives" for Bush and his policies over the last seven years.
There was very little in the way of principled opposition to spending plans, foriegn policy choices, etc. And, there was universal glee at judicial picks. The GOP liked running the show and through the K Street project and other efforts, they went a far-sight to create Rove's permanent majority and to do so by persuing "conservative" voters, pushing concservative buttons, etc.
In short, they ignored the middle and Clintonian triangulation, etc. to try and build a conservative, permanent, ideological majority. If they are to lose now, it is because they hewed pretty closely to modern American conservatism in all of its blind fury rather than a reasoned, rational approach that would have called for co-opting the oposition by bringing it along.
The deserve the fate I think the gods are going to deal them in Congressional and Senate races this fall.
