  • I know this is harsh

And I don't intend this to be a general characterization of people in that KY-WV-western PA Appalachian area, but...

I like to think Obama can win without the ignorant racist cracker vote.

  • Who'smagi number

2210 Is Hillary's magic number. It is not the official number of the DNC. Yes, even with his loss in Kentucky Obama has reached the majority of popular vote and pledged delegtes. IN fact it was his 31 % in Kentucky that put him in the pledged delegate majority.

Now he needs under 100 more Super delegates to declare victory before May 31.

    Go Obama!!!

  • Hillary Clinton is right about the need to unite the party

The fact that Hillary Clinton has swept states like Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia underscores class divisions within the Democratic party. Poor white people do not view Barack Obama as their hero because they identify him with well-educated, upper middle class liberals. It is because of this association and because of the accompanying stereotype that people like him are simplistically anti-military and pro vegetarian that working class whites don't like him - not because he is black. To poor white people, only snooty rich snobs can afford the luxury of protesting wars and drinking soy milk. Their perception is that these high falutin' liberals just have too much privilege to understand how real people live and too much education to ever gain any real knowledge about anything. It is a pity, because now of all times the Democratic party should be able to count on the votes of this large, disenfranchised group. And yet, this group isn't stupid - these people feel the sting of being called white trash and of being unwanted and ignored by the wealthier, Marxist elite liberals in the party. If Democrats are to win this race, then the leaders of this party must stop trying to market liberalism as a hip, cool fashion statement and instead tout ways in which their progressive platform is better positioned to help all Americans. This is what Clinton has done with her universal health care proposal and her success here should not be overlooked by the Obama campaign, especially if it wants to win over much of the disenfranchised white poor. An emphasis on the improvement of infrastructure, including mass transportation and a position on the military that is both anti-war and pro-military family would also help win over these voters. Leave religion and race out of the conversation entirely; most poor white voters care more about job security, clean water and health care than they do about Jesus and skin color. Appeal to their basic intelligence and quit pandering to their fears and many of these voters will be won over.

  • Only part of Kentucky is Applachia

Hello Salon headline writer: Please do your research next time. The easternmost part of this state is in Appalachia; the majority is not.

The state may be largely rural, but "Appalachia" and "rural" are not identical terms.

You published a thoughtful letter by Dee Davis just today about Obama and rural voters; please don't go and undermine it now with sloppy work.

  • It's over, Hillary

You've lost. You're a dead woman walking. Yes, you have your supporters, including a certain percentage of white working class voters, but not all of them. You lost a lot of us when you kept praising John McCain and acted like yet another "I'm not a Republican but I play one on TV" Democrat.

Give up, and for all I care, go away.

  • For all that is good and decent,

let it go, Hillary! It's not going to happen for you. You have lied and you have slung the mud until too many of us are sick of your campaign. You will not win. Was there sexism? Of course there was. But contrary to your absurd denial, there was also racism--sometimes from your own campaign! You both had an uphill climb. Obama's the one who's going to reach the summit. And he did it with a lot more integrity. That's just the way it is. Now is the time for you to decide that it's more important to put a Democrat in the White House than a Clinton on the stage in Denver. Do the right thing! If you want to finish the voting, fine, but stop moving goalposts and making ridiculous claims and arguments. Choose to exist in the reality-based universe and do some good.

  • P.S. For any nuts out there

"Dead woman walking" referred to Hillary's chances as a nominee. As in, Obama will be the nominee, so give it up already.

  • Just how many vats of kool-aid have you drunk?

Hillary Clinton's time in the sun following her big victory in Kentucky's Democratic primary Tuesday night might be brief, as later on in the night Barack Obama will deliver a victory speech of sorts...

And just when does the 'bow down all to Obama' crap end??? Ever? Hillary Clinton has scored a landslide win in Kentucky and seems to be holding her own in Oregon. This qualifies as genuine news. Hillary has clearly hit her stride while Obama's sun is starting to set - especially with the voters, who have been trending Hillary's way for many weeks now. But attention must be diverted Obama's way ASAP. Why? Got any good reasons?

Furthermore, you really believe Obama would've summoned the grace Hillary displayed in her comments about Ted Kennedy today? Kennedy kicked Hillary in the teeth (not the first time), yet she can still find it in herself to say kind words about him. Put the shoe on Obama's foot and he would almost undoubtedly still be sulking. Hurt feelings and all, you know. Sorry, but Obama doesn't have the goods to be president of this country, something which becomes more and more self evident as the days go by, so please stop trying to cram him down our throats. Do you really want McCain as president that badly?

  • actually, JeffM23, they are honkies not crackers

(but you can still call them racist)

  • Obama can't win

I like to think Obama can win without the ignorant racist cracker vote.

Maybe, but he can't win without the "I'm an educated moderate PA voter but I never fell for the BS of BO" vote.

Barack Dukakis is going to lose without us, and good riddance.

  • too late, race bait kate

the klinton kracker movement is dead. a body that big takes time to fall over, but you can already smell the decomposition. rank.
