More Important than McCain
In this case, I think the statement by Governor Schwarzenegger that he would not support a constitutional amendment overturning the Calif Supreme Court to be key.
Arnold is a very savvy student of the political mood in the state. If he doesn't think such an amendment is worth his support, it won't fly.

Whether or not McCain succeeds in putting California in play, the issue may resonate around the country, even if it is legally confined to California law.
So what is Obama's position on gay marriage? Is it on his website?

California Dreamin'
McCain is no Ahhhnold. On the issues or otherwise. Might the democrats wish that McCain dedicates lots of precious time and other scarce resources to winning CA?
Or is McCain trying to bluff his own party radicals into thinking that he has a shot at the title?
I don't think he'll be back.

As a Californian
I say, "Bring it on!" when it comes to Republicans trying to "make a play" for my state. Yeah, we got our red areas (OC/Central Valley), but there are a lot more Dems/Inds who are pissed at how Cal has been shit on by the federal government.
So lets have a debate or two here. I'de definitely like to personally watch Obama smack down Grandpa Grumpus.

Blue
I don't think CA is going to go Red for McCain. My bet is, that'll never happen.

Obama and gay marriage...
I don't recall Obama making a lot of noise about "the traditional definition of marriage," although on that front he certainly walks the walk better than John "Divorcing You For a Richer Model" McCain.

I don't think McCain really has a shot in CA
There are two usually reliably red counties in CA, Orange County and Pleasanton. The Democrats ousted the incumbent Republicans by a handful of votes for the House seats, but they still won.
It's harder for me to guage because I live in the Bay Area so according to most of the country we're a bunch of latte sipping elite granola munchin pot smokin vegan hippies, so we're pretty much guarunteed to go Blue. The Republicans I know are social liberals, they just hate taxes and government interference and are into personal property rights, the don't care about abortion, gays and drugs they just see Dems as too much of a nanny state so they vote Red. The only difference I can see is that the Republicans I know, they would vote for McCain over Clinton, but they would vote for Obama over McCain.

I don't quite get this article
Is there any reason to think California will turn right in this particular election? If not, then what's the point? Feels like groundless speculation to me.
-
With Obama consistently losing . . .
the majority of whites, the majority of hispanics, and the majority of asians, CA could easily be in play in November.
Especially since the GOP has nominated a moderate who wants to give amnesty to illegals. That's gonna play well in hispanic areas.

MCCain Won't Have the Money to Waste
This is just posturing. McCain will be lucky to have sufficent funds to hold on to some traditional small red states, let alone have the ability to come up with the amount of money needed to mount a serious campaign here - when his chance here are slim to none.
I live in the heart of Republican OC and while I think the old pre-Bush loving version of McCain was a perfect fit for the don't tax-me Republicans here, linking himself to the unpopular Bush is going to be disastrous for him. I have seen not a single McCain bumper sticker - Ron Paul is the only Republcan here who has any visible support. My eighth grader tells me that kids at school for months has been saying "Bush sucks" and "Obama is cool", no doubt parenting their parents. I don't think Obama will win OC but any means, but their is no enthusiasm for McCain even here in Republican land.
