Networks call West Virginia for Clinton

In an unsurprising result, Hillary Clinton has apparently won West Virginia's Democratic primary; the question now is her margin of victory, and how much it'll matter.

The letters thread is now closed.

Rev Wright

All I get from Rev Wright is that some assholes are black. If he wanted to favor Sen Obama all he had to do was to keep his mouth shut.

Lord, Have Mercy

These whites in West Virginia know nothing about the Black church or Black American culture. It's not surprising that these voters swallow the lies hook, line, and sinker. IT'S WEST VIRGINIA, folks, home of Robert Byrd (ex-Klansmen). APPALACHIA. Not that there aren't good things about Appalachia, but racism and homophobia aren't part of those good things. I know, I've lived in Appalachia.

Why on Earth would the party fret about losing the racist white vote? That Hillary would celebrate receiving the racist vote, knowing the results of exit polls and the demographics is a little creepy. Besides, if the choice were between a white woman and white man, WV would vote McCain.

I write this without bitterness or rancor, but WV having switched from being a Democratic state in 1988 to a solidly George Bush-loving state (2000, 2004) would never have occurred without the corporate, right-wing media. The media have steadily consolidated rapidly in the last twenty years, and have become almost pro-fascist. There is not a single news program on any major, corporate-owned network that is dedicated to issues of social justice, labor, the working class, or the negative effects of globalization, while we are literally inundated with "business" news programs (stocks) touting the latest falsehoods and glorifications of capitalism. It's mass brain-washing.

Along with this trend is the decline of the percentage of union voters. Many unions are sources of information that members can actually use to fight back, and many have some progressive support and independent newsletters to mail to their members to counter the corporate news cycle. With the loss of unions also went one of the few outlets for alternative sources of news and analysis. What a far cry from the 1920-1950's.

Oooh!

Wolfson is one slimy fellow isn't he? Totally lied through his teeth about how Clinton said that Michigan wouldn't count just now on CNN...

Jeebus, I though Penn was a sneaky fella, Wolfson makes him look like Mary Poppins!

What to do with WV?

I know it does no good to just say the West Virginia voters are a bunch of uneducated racist idiots who would sooner vote for Charles Manson than a black man for President.

But it seems that changing hearts and minds who are born racist takes generations, not an election cycle. I'd love to imagine we live in a country where people in West Virginia are open to hearing about Obama and his policies. I just can't imagine a scenario where this is even remotely possible.

That's the problem with ignorance ... curing it takes willing participants, and most ignoramuses are 1) convinced they know everything; and 2) instantly skeptical of anyone who challenges their belief systems. The only short-term solution for getting votes is feeding the beast, which Hillary is utterly unashamed to do. Obama can only do so much to feed the beast, because so many people won't even listen to him because of his skin color.

So I guess the happy medium is to treat West Virginia as it deserves to be treated - as utterly inconsequential.

The reality is...

that no candidate in the general will be able to win every state. So you pick and choose your battles and gauge your chances.

His loss in WV was expected but I can understand the questions Clinton's campaign will raise as arguments for super delegates. The key question fro Obama is whether he can attract democrats in states with similar demographics when there is only ONE democrat on the ballot.

I believe we can.

The question for Clinton is whether we could reply on the larger turnout of new AA and youth voters if the sense the process was 'an inside job'.

I hope so.

The task then for Obama will be to choose the states where we want to concentrate his time, money and surrogates in order to compete against McCain. I'd choose PA or OH or FL. LA, VA, CO, OR will all be in play this time out thanks to his voter registration efforts and the generally long primary season.

It hard to know what will offset what. There are swing voters (like me) in every state that dems are attracting. How will Dems fare with them against McCain? We don't know. So many unknowable variables. Will the sorry state of the economy and real issues trump fears, discomfort, racism or sexism? We just don't know - we have NOTHING to go by. these are variables we cannot predict. The only way to see is to run and wait for the outcome, frankly.

Ho hum, Clinton wins another battleground state

I'm waiting to hear the screaming from y'all about how it doesnlt matter. Like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana...

People here just can't accpet the fact that many people just prefer Clitnon over Obama plain and simple. It's always some sneaky Rove-like tactic, playing the race card, etc. Maybe, just maybe, people think she'd be a better President.

You really think Obama can win the general election with just the African-American vote and the same old liberal vanguard of white eggheads and students? Please. Barack Obama = smooth jazz remix of Michael Dukakis. And the fellow just gave up the state because he knows he doesn't have a prayer with rural white folks. He quit, tipped his king right in front of an entire swing state. Nice.

But I guess the only reason Clinton won is that those yokels are ignint, right? Could it be that some folks might be a little skeptical of a Presidential candidate who spent 20 years listening to a racist pastor? You surprised that still concerns people?

Go ahead, flame me. It's all I get with this crowd.

big frigging deal

Appalacia Inbreedia has 28 delegates. if she wins by 30 points, she'll get 18, he'll get ten. He gained four super delegates today. so the net result of this big win in an all white state is that she'll gain six delegates. Next week, she'll lose ten times that many in Oregon. The bitch ain't back. She'd done.
