An "October surprise" to help Obama?

Gabriel Schoenfeld suggests terrorists may try to help Barack Obama's electoral prospects this fall, but history doesn't support his take.

You don't need to be so dramatic

When Salon's BFF is screaming that the EU is Nazi Germany

Since it's gospel whatever Chavez says to the People's Republic of Salon, you don't need to get all imaginative hoping for Islamic fundamentalists of the Hamas, Hezbollah to do much of anything to promote Obama. It's axiomatic that if some cannibal king, third world revolutionary despot or just about anyone who has an AK-47 on their flag says Obama's the Man, then that is that.

Exactly

"The terrorists" will do everything they can to insure McCain's election, as they did everything they could to insure Bush's 2004 victory, because every aggressive American action is another recruitment triumph for their cause. Furthermore, the al Qaeda ideology accepts the prospect of a long war between the faithful and the infidels, and even the most crazed extremist knows that our military, which has a budget bigger than the rest of the world's combined, cannot be beaten in an open contest. The strategy is to weaken us over time and to use a version of Ali's "rope-a-dope" strategy against George Foreman. The Republicans are a jihadist's dream, bogging our troops down in an insanely expensive occupation of a country that was always unfriendly to al Qaeda anyway. The Schoenfeld article is just another example of the parallel universe in which conservatives are living--one having almost no points of contact with reality.

Alex, Alex, Alex

This WSJ editorial is all just speculation. Where is the news in this? What is being reported?

I have said it before and I'll say it again -- the Wall Street Journal is an outlet for people who have been bred in the Heritage Foundation think tank, among other Neocon organizations (the Cato Institute, for example). The WSJ is just a mouthpiece for the most ridiculously partisan speculation and fantasizing. I'd trust the moonie Washington Times before I'd trust the WSJ's opinion pages.

Secondly, please check your facts regarding the 2004 Osama bin Laden "videotape." Was it really a videotape at all? Or just an audiotape?

The Pentagon has been hawking bin Laden "videotapes" for years, and the U.S. media is compliant in presenting them as such. The fact is, however, that Obama has not appeared in a videotape since around 2001. Every subsequent appearance has been of either questionable video quality (you can't tell it's really him), or has been merely audio but presented alongside a still video image to create the public perception that Obama is very much alive. Many insiders strongly believe Obama to have been killed in the CIA's first wave of Afghanistan raids, and there's no hard evidence to disabuse that suspicion. Check for yourself, Obama's long gone. He's more powerful as a Western bogeyman than he ever was among Islamic radicals.

By all means, read the WSJ op-ed and know thy enemy. But don't take them seriously.

"October surprise" specualtion....a bit premature, don't you think?

Um, it's May.

As a P.S., your general argument is correct, Alex: Any terrorism or threat of terrorism will help McCain. Pretty much anything that makes people afraid will help the warmonger get elected instead of the peace-talker.

I wish you would be more careful in your headlines.

The text of the posting makes it clear that an october surprise would be to benefit mccain and the status quo. Maybe if you had put the quotation marks around "help" rather than "october surprise". Or maybe just "Another Right Wing Nut Job Thinks Americans Will Die Because of Democrats!"

Maybe Cheney and Bush

Would use an October Suprise to suspend the election for National Security (start goosesteppin' baby) ...and Hill ..don't give up - I see another opportunity.

Terrorism via economic destruction

McCain = More Bush = More War the U.S. cannot afford = Higher Oil Prices = Greater Food Prices= Deeper Recession/Depression = total economic destruction of the USA

Hastened Armageddon = The Return of their Messiah

This is NOT rocket science. I sure hope Obama makes this VERY VERY Clear in the general election. I think many "regular" people have never thought of it.

MESSAGE: They say they want Obama to scare folks into voting for McCain. With McCain comes (see above).

I think the we should roll video tapes of Al Quaeda and that Iranian dude saying that they want to engage us in a war to bring on Armageddon. I'm sure its out there. Then emphasize that's what you get when you vote for McCain. I think it would be powerful.

The Middle East...

...just wants to practice their politics (violent or otherwise) without US intervention.

Thats the only thing that is clear. All the rest is mind-reading. The pentagon, pundits, politicians, etc, must have a huge bills from calling those 1-800 psychic phone numbers.

And now I forget, which presidential candidate promises to not meddle in the Middle East?

Monday, May 12, 2008 10:28 AM

Really?

As in the case of the Hamas spokesman helping Obama? How would such a terrorist "October surprise" help Obama?

A segment of the population already believes that he's a stealth Muslim. Edw. Luttwak's op-ed piece, President Apostate?, in the New York Times ain't gonna help much:

"As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant."

"See, I told you that boy was Muslim!" is going to be heard throughout the blogosphere.

Of course, the United States doesn't operate under sharia law so what Muslim cite as law in the Islamic world doesn't matter here. He's a Christian, but that won't matter to his detractors.

No, the real potential "October surprise" may be a US attack on Iran, which would probably rally the public around a McCain campaign bashing Iran.

Does anyone question?

Does anyone question why OBL would want GWB to continue as POTUS? When you lack the resources to wage war against a superpower, but are able to sting it once and then sit back as it bankrupts itself morally and economically itself in overreaction -- why would you want to see the chief architect of that self-destruction (and his enabling pals) leave office?
