An obscure provision of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law means Hillary Clinton has until the convention to recoup what she's lent her campaign.

  • What does Bill say about this?

"Clinton has told him she'd be willing to lend more to her campaign"

Hey, hon that's my money. How about Chelsea? I'd be pissed if mom was spending my inheritance.

  • "All this, of course, will only add fuel to the speculation that Barack Obama's campaign may help the Clinton camp retire its debt, something that's not uncommon at the end of a primary run."

So at this point is she just piling up more and more debt to saddle the Obama campaign with? Considering the tone, tactics and financial mismanagement of the clinton campaign, I don't think Obama should help out at all. Enough of her already.

  • Really?

All this, of course, will only add fuel to the speculation that Barack Obama's campaign may help the Clinton camp retire its debt, something that's not uncommon at the end of a primary run.

    ― Alex Koppelman

Really? Examples, please, preferably from presidential campaigns.

  • It takes a village.

If she keeps this up, that's exactly what it's going to take to pay off her debt.

  • Courting the middle class vote...

See! Hillary is just like us. After all, how many of us are $11 million in debt to ourselves? Further proof that she isn't some wealthy elitist like Obama.

Is this part of the game over yet?

  • A Cynic's View

"a little-known provision of [the McCain-Feingold campaign finanance reform bill] prevents candidates who drop out of the race from raising money after the nominating conventions to repay themselves for personal loans."

And the reason for Clinton to remain in an unwinnable race suddenly becomes more clear.

  • Or...

She could just ignore the law like McCain has done opting in and out of the public financing provisions when it suited him.

Surely the "liberal" press will give her the same pass on following the law as it gives him, won't they?

  • Obama should tell her he will help with her debt if she drops out NOW.

If she decides to continue and running up her tab thinking he'll just bail her out anyway, she's done. She gets nothing.

In what world is failure to know when your beat and running up astronomical debts something you look for in a leader? These are not admirable qualities.

  • NOT WITH MY NICKLE!

"All this, of course, will only add fuel to the speculation that Barack Obama's campaign may help the Clinton camp retire its debt."

I have donated to Barack and I don't want my money going to someone who willingly incurs more debt when the numbers prove there is no hope.

  • If Obama helps her retire her campaign debt

then he will effectively have partially underwritten the smear campaign against him. Interesting.

  • This One, Unfortunately

In what world is failure to know when your beat and running up astronomical debts something you look for in a leader?

On the other hand, Clinton could argue that these attributes clearly make her presidential given the current occupant.

  • Hard working Americans would rather pay a gas tax...

...than have the $25, $50, $100 contributions we've made to the Obama campaign be re-routed to pay back ill-advised loans made by the millionaire opponent whose intentions have been to destroy the image and reputation of our candidate. No thank you.

Maybe it's not uncommon for campaigns to take this sort of action but this is a highly unusual situation. Clinton has been loaning her own money is a last ditch effort that has resulted in a month of hail mary attempts at character assassination. Obama, if you must help her campaign repay it's debts, at least exclude the ones owed to anyone named Clinton.

  • Obama woshippers need to pony up more to pay for Hillary

That is awesome. You people that hate Hillary are giving her your money. I can't wait til tomorrow. What a blowout that is going to be.

  • @adelito

That is awesome. You people that hate Hillary are giving her your money.

It hasn't happened yet. IMO, it doesn't have a chance if Hillary continues to bash Obama instead of touting her own strengths.

  • Sympathy for Hillary

It's totally understandable why she wants someone else to pay her back the 11.5 million dollars she has loaned her campaign. Who the hell can live on 97 million dollars?

  • Settle down, people...

The money you've already given to Obama won't be used to retire Clinton's debt...because it can't be. Ok, that's 99.9% accurate, Obama can donate $2300 just like anyone else. What they mean when they talk about him helping her retire the debt is holding joint fundraisers, him making appeals on his website or through the DNC, or some other mechanism to raise more money that would go to her.

I'm pretty sure he can't just hand over $10M in cash. Otherwise, it would be too easy to evade donation limits. All you'd have to do is have 100 people run sham campaigns with the agreement that they would "drop out" and "help you retire your debt" at the end of the campaign. So your big donors (I'm looking at you, Rob Reiner) could effectively give $2300 to Sen. Clinton, her cousin (also running), her uncle (checking in at .00000001% in the polls), her manicurist (whose slogan is "I'll drop out when Hillary needs me to! Yes I will!") and 96 other phony campaigns.

So if you don't like the way Clinton has run this campaign (and honestly, who does, including her supporters?) you don't have to worry that your $50 is being shifted from Senator Hope to Senator Nope (or his opponent in the general, Senator Mope).

  • Financial Mismanagement

I would now love to know why anyone truly believes that Hillary Clinton is a competent manager. She has driven her campaign into a debt for more than $20 million. This is good fiscal policy?

And no, Obama should not help out Hillary unless there's some fair turnaround. She doesn't get to race-bait and fear-monger and get help with her bills.

  • @Adelito

Just a question: How much have YOU contributed to Clinton's campaign? How many of your friends and family have you pushed to volunteer or contribute? That's the real problem. Clinton's own supporters can't be bothered to help her campaign continue. Obama meanwhile, he's rolling in it. Big difference. I guess his supporters just care about his campaign more. I guess that also explains his delegate lead as well.

As for Obama paying Billary's bills, the system doesn't work that way, thank goodness!

  • According to TPM the max amount the Obama campaign could give is $2,000

The Obama campaign can only give the Clinton campaign $2000, not even the $2300 permitted by individuals.

So why keep raising this issue, especially since it's obvious that the people who support Obama do not support Clinton's Quixotic candidacy and would not want their money diverted to her? Perhaps it's a purposeful strategy by the Clinton camp (not that they ever circulate rumors), a way to try to slow down the Obama fundraising juggernaut, to make people think twice before giving him another $25 or $50?
