McCain defends comments about Hamas, Obama

John McCain justifies his statement that Hamas wants Barack Obama to be president by saying he's only discussing what's of interest to voters.

Losing his bearings = losing his marbles?

No young person has ever lost his bearings or marbles.

That's because young people use zip-loc bags.

Friday, May 9, 2008 02:26 PM

Aw heck...

Xrandadu beat me to the marbles joke...

Friday, May 9, 2008 02:30 PM

Me me me me me!!!

This is gonna be GOOD. I want front and center.

Is the GOP on the defensive? How many more stupid statements will McCain make? how much more quickly will Obama's campaign be responding to stupidity (good work!)

Thing is Americans aren't as gullible as we used to be back in the 20th century. We've become quite cynical. IS McCain really going to try to sell that?

THESE PEOPLE SAID THEY LIKE HIM SO....

On the other hand, I personally think terrorists would LOVE to see us remain mired in a losing middle east hell. Look what its done to our economy. They must LOVE watching us sink while funding both sides of their DESTROY AMERICA goals.

NOTE OT MCCAIN: There's more than one way to destroy our country. One is with plane hitting buildings. Its quick, devastating and demoralizing. ANOTHER IS WITH THE SINKING ECONOMY YOU SEE, INDEBTEDNESS TO THE VERY COUNTRIES WE OPPOSE. They don't NEED planes or bombs. We're being destroyed from within.

Sigh. McCain and the repubs. Good luck with these OLD ass arguments this fall. I think you'll be surprised how un-gullible GW has made us as a nation.

misunderstandings

wow, does anyone think that was a crack about mccain's age? losing your bearings, like going the wrong direction. obama was saying that mccain is claiming to run a clean campaign but is getting off track by implying that obama is on the same side of anything as hamas. it had absolutely nothing to do with his age.

is this what the election is going to be about? stupid semantic misunderstandings? let's hope not.

Some reassurance.

Now that Obama appears to be the "inevitable" nominee that the Clintons sought to make Hillary, it's nice to know that he can counterpunch.

There's really no telling how nasty Wet-Start Jackie and his proxies are capable of getting, especially with President Feeb's "brain" helping out.

mr x

I read it that way too BUT

Obama is a really smart guy. (and chicago ain't no cakewalk politically)

Perhaps the statement was, on its face, exactly as you say. But perhaps the reference was a very smart subconscious way of alluding to age. You know, the way the Repubs will subconsciously bring attention to barak's name, loyalties and race like they did with that *gangs* ad a week or so ago?

I don't know if he was THAT calculating...but if it was intentional, its brilliant.

Friday, May 9, 2008 02:59 PM

AND

if i were Obama I would save that response by the McCain team where they said it was an intentional and not so clever way of raising the issue of McCain's age.

So when they unleash their Willie Horton-style "scary black man" ads, Obama's team can simply say the same.

Pardom my saying this

with no wish to be mean, but Mr. McCain, sounds like Sheikh Yassin.

Friday, May 9, 2008 03:03 PM

McCain ain't Hillary

Obviously, McCain plans to take aim at the now famous, passive aggressive Obama style of campaigning. The gloves are gonna come off early and often, and though some of the punches will go astray, some of them will undoubtedly have their effect. No fair crying foul on Obama's behalf, either, as his campaign has been about as down and dirty as they come (call it Axelrod Syndrome). This time it's gonna be guy on guy, Republican on Democrat, so McCain isn't going to be hounded by the media for going negative on Obama.

Friday, May 9, 2008 03:13 PM

We don't have to do anything... give him time

now that the attention is off the Dem race. Granpa will say something real dumb and it will be all over the news cycle.

Friday, May 9, 2008 03:32 PM

can't wait !!

For McCain to just let that last marble out of the bag. First he'll confuse Shi'ite and Sunni, then throw a full blown foul mouthed tantrum when someone calls him out.

Friday, May 9, 2008 04:02 PM

He meant McCain's lost his way

I'm a hiker. When I read that the other day, I just thought he was saying McCain had been a good guy, a fellow senator and he's lost his way, "lost his bearings" when he got off on that Hamas thing. I really thought of losing one's bearings to mean losing one's mooring, in this case, McCain's moral grounding.

So, I found it interesting that McCain's campaign's reaction was to assume it was an age thing. Seems they're a little sensitive there. They may regret that.

While racism or sexisim, or even age-ism, are always bad, the public may want to parse that a little. One's looks, skin or gender have no affect on their judgement or job performance; however, one's age might.

Friday, May 9, 2008 04:17 PM

Who's Bringing Age Into It?

Obama "used the words 'losing his bearings' intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain's age as an issue," Salter said on Friday. "This is typical of the Obama style of campaigning."

Oh Mr. Salter, the only one who raised the issue of age here was you. Far be it from me to offer you advice, but I think that you might not want to point out so vociferously that your candidate is a bit past it. Everyone will notice sooner or later anyway, but why rush it?

Friday, May 9, 2008 04:18 PM

The simplest answer:

How has NOT talking to them worked out so far?

Friday, May 9, 2008 04:25 PM

@BobbyG

Welcome to the group, white america!

But we prefer President Barack Hussein Obama, Leader of the free world.

Friday, May 9, 2008 04:31 PM

STILL...OBAMA MISSED THE POINT

Why say "lost his bearings?" Obama can do better, still, than simply insult him (although it's amusing the McCain camp immediately thought "lost bearings" was about age). He should have simply pointed out that Hammas has no vote in our election, nor should they be trusted to comment on it. Who knows what they really think, wish, or are planning? How can they be trusted to comment truthfully? It does us no good to seek support for one's platform by seeking the opinion of Hammas.

Just because my fellow Americans might be interested

Last night Joseph Stalin endorsed John McCain. Now, I'm not saying John McCain is like Stalin, but plain as day, Stalin endorsed him anyway using my Ouija board, and the American people ought to know that.
