So What?
Why on earth is it news what George McGovern thinks? He's not exactly an expert on how Democrats should campaign for the presidency and win.
Truth is, the experts are the Clintons. Bill Clinton is the only Democrat to win the presidency since LBJ except Carter, who got elected on a fluke, was a disaster and got defeated on reelection. The Clintons know how to take it to the Republicans and beat them.
As went McGovern, Mondale, Dukakis, and Kerry, so will go Obama? (Out of fairness I won't include Gore since he really won, although he should have won by a lot more and avoided that horrible outcome.)
-
Has Carville called him a traitor yet?
I'm interested to see how the Clinton camp responds to this. Have they learned lesssons from their ridiculous Richardson and Gabriel Guerra-Mondragon responses, or they try to paint McGovern as a Judas?

@Missouri Dave
I realize that Obama supporters do not feel that Clinton supporters belong in the the Democratic Party (I'm beginning to wonder myself, actually), but Clinton is not actually a 3rd Party candidate. She is a Democrat, running in the Democratic Primary, which is not over until the convention. The many millions of Democratic voter's who supporterd her have a right to have their votes counted, even if she loses. Obama supporter's would do well to remember that, Brazille's views notwithstanding, you need us to win the general election.

@ ncawley
I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and I think George McGovern and all of the super delegates should stay out of this race until the people have voted.
Maybe George should get back to the steroid use problems and stay out of our race.
And maybe you should get some idea of who George McGovern is before you post yet another comment that makes you look like a moron who doesn't know what she's talking about.
-
McGovern is still alive?
I think that's the most revealing thing about his endorsement. I thought the guy was ancient when he ran against Nixon 40 years ago. I just assumed he had joined Tricky Dick in ... wherever dead politicians go.
When Edwards or Gore give the same message, then it will mean something. I can't imagine either of those folks sitting on the sidelines much longer.

@ncawley
McGovern is a friend to the Clintons. Before you toss away his statement in support of Obama, reflect on who else is left to let her know the campaign is over.
Bill won't tell her it's over. He owes her. Neither will Chelsea. The cadre of backbiters on her team probably don't have the guts. Long-standing friends and party donors, not subordinates and employees, are the ones to advise her. This call for her to drop out came after a phone call to the Clintons, meaning that McGovern informed them of his perspective. As others do the same, privately or publicly, Hillary will face the inevitable truth. She's lost the primary. No end run for MI and FL delegates will be able to sway SD's and will be widely viewed as underhanded politics. Better to have a friend tell you than a rival.
-
Obama has most SD support
Obama got 3 more Super delegates today.
Obama only need 33 pledged delegates or 170 total delgates to secure the nomination now.
In SD former Senator Daschele already supports Obama that's is what is important. McGovern is right though. Hillary should drop out. Hillary has no chance of catching up. Her MI/ Fl argument is old and no one is listening to here.

Then explain why the Clintons, the experts, have lost to Obama? When one is behind on states, votes and delegates, you've lost. I believe you must win your own primary first before moving onto the GE. Perhaps it is this type of entitlement logic that has doomed Hillary's cammpaign.

@ AKA Smith
First of all, he should have informed Senator Clinton before making this announcement. Second, he shouldn't be calling Bill. Bill is not running for president. The fact that he informed the former president, Bill Clinton, instead of Hillary Clinton disgusting to me. He is treating Hillary Clinton as a "little lady" rather than a candidate for the presidency.
Hillary Clinton deserves to be treated as a great many things, but "candidate for the presidency" is no longer one of them.

AKA Smith
"He is treating Hillary Clinton as a "little lady" rather than a candidate for the presidency."
Or maybe he just has a closer relationship with Bill Clinton. Why does everything have to parsed for some hint of sexism? And why does it matter?

RE: Calling Bill Clinton
I think it is really streching it- and really showing the chip on your shoulder to suggest it is wrong to call Bill Clinton- the former President, chief fundraiser of Hillary's campaign and the one who has been personally putting in calls to persuade super delegates for the past few weeks.
Hillary has obviously born the brunt of a lot of sexism- over the years and in this campaign and I would be the last to say that was ok but it just seems a little silly to take objection to this and looks like looking fora slight where none exists.
-
Give it up
Hillary supporters need to give up the MI Fl argument. Hillary, like the other candidates agreed not to count those votes. Hillary did not give a damn about those otes until she did not win big and secure the nomination on Super Tuesday. Her biggest
slim bag move in the entire primary is when she showed up in Fl knowing the votes did not count to declare victory. Obama will be our candidate.

SExism bull
I've put up with my share of sexism over the years. If you want to avoid it you don't play the gender card. Hillary played the gender card at every opportunity. She also used her husband experience s her own. She's not losing because of sexism. She's loosing because because voters think Obama is a better candidate.
