What did Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton say about their opposition to federal oversight of the union?
The letters thread is now closed.
  • Our Obama wouldn't never pander... or would he?

Hurry up and sew up that nomination Obama. Do it before any other hyposcriies start leaking out.

  • How about putting BOTH candidates' comments in this item, Alex?

I was unable to see the entire WSJ article -- it required a subscription -- so those in the same position aren't privileged to read it in its entirety.

However, the MSNBC article linked here does contain some other comments and quotes that really ought to be in this item, allowing us to compare and contrast the comments of both candidates. Here's the pertinent excerpt from MSNBC:

But John Coli, vice president for the Teamsters central region, who brokered the Teamsters endorsement, said Sen. Obama was ‘pretty definitive that the time had come to start the beginning of the end’ of the three-member independent review board that investigates suspect activity in the union. Mr. Coli said that Sen. Obama conveyed that view in a series of phone conversations and meetings with Teamsters officials last year.”

“Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor confirmed the candidate's position in a statement to The Wall Street Journal, saying that Sen. Obama believes that the board ‘has run its course,’ because ‘organized crime influence in the union has drastically declined.’ Mr. Vietor said Sen. Obama took that position last year."

So, Hillary Clinton says: "I would be very open to looking at that...", and Barack was: "...pretty definitive that the time had come to start the beginning of the end..." Maybe I'm naive or dense, but I think there IS a significant difference between those two statements.

The first commits to nothing substantive, while the second "pretty definitely" does!

  • Dubmanny

I guess you mean Clinton's hypocrisy in accusing Obama of saying something she has also said.

  • Oversight

Oversight can be changed from time to time if necessary.

  • I guess this one has the zealots here stumped

Gee it can't possibly be that my candidate Blessed be He/Her is a craven hack, can it? Anyway, you people shock me and disappoint me. I was expecting a torrent of letters about how the real warcriminals are Wall St.

  • Quid Pro Quo?

    It's not even a question.

The Justice Department controls monitoring of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. And who does the Justice Department report to?

The biggest joke of the campaign season : Obama does not practice old style politics. Hysterical.

To go further, pandering like the Christian pandering earlier in the primaries is miniscule compared to the biggest pander of all, to all of his supporters : "I'll change how things are done in Washington."--Obama

  • For crying out loud!

Neither Hillary nor Barack loves you.

They do not care about your problems or concerns.

They do care who you vote for and will say whatever is necessary to get you to vote for them.

These are politicians. Their "ideas" are similar enough that when you crank either of them through the actual legislative process, the results are going to be the same.

If you are a member of the Teamsters, they will talk of empowering your organization.

If you buy gasoline, they will offer to keep money in your pocket.

If you hate the war, the will promise to end it.

If you're scared of terrorists they will vow to keep you safe.

Can we please just wrap ourselves around this fact and move on? Indiana and North Carolina residents: flip a coin and get it over with.

Neither of these yahoos have what it takes to win the general election, we need to start working to make sure that McCain loses in November.

  • Teamsters Smeemsters.

Billory's last minute attack add places her smack dab into the ranks of High-Rovian lie/smear/hate mongering. No wonder her negative ratings are so high. Her scorched earth tactics for short gain in her quest for power has once and for all placed her as the democratic interchangeable washington based politician indistinguishable from Mccain and the fear/hate mongering "same-as-usual" we have had since the dark side found out how well such horse-puck works on our low level thinking white middle class. Nauseating. Absolutely nauseating. There are plenty of Bozos on this bus...

  • Teamsters will police self . . .

"A Teamsters spokesman says the union doesn't want to duplicate efforts of the oversight board. But if the board were no longer in place, he says the union would handle such matters itself."

Can the gangs in LA get the same deal? We stop tracking them and they police themselves?

How about zero oversight from OSHA or the IRS and all industries pomise to send in the amount they actually owe and to protect their workers?

It's a change they can live with, it's doing things differently, so let's elect Obama!

It's hilarious also that it hovered around the NAFTA stance Obama alternately took in the US then sent an emissary to Canada to calm their fears over, so the Teamsters might end up under the bus with anyone else who gets on board the Obama express.

I love that people thinking Obama wheeling and dealing in 2007 doesn't apply to this campaign, it's the height of naievete. The guy was running for president in 2004 folks, wake up. New York and Carolina Teamsters wanted their candidates (Hillary and Edwards, respectively), hey, what deal could have possibly skewed endorsement in Obama's favor . . .

  • DOES ANYONE HONESTLY THINK

that resume' lite, no experience, do-nothing, change-agent Obama is getting any of these endorsements without trading off something? Oh hell NO! A new kind of politics? Oh hell NO! A process "fixer?" Oh hell NO! Going to change Washington, D.C.? Oh hell NO.

Obama is the epitome of what Washington, D.C. thrives on: dishonest, manipulative, conniving power grabs and overly ambitious asses.
