  • I dunno

man, I listened to that thing about 5 times on bust with headphones and it certainly seems like he's saying those words. But you gotta rrreallly listen closely.

Which could explain why no one complained when the movie was released.

I think it's stupid though - who gives a shit what some dude with Bill's campaign said in 1992?? Immaterial.

(although the vengeful part of me does like the idea of watching someone else squirm for once ;)

  • Ties

I don't think you can reasonably tie this guy to Hilary Clinton's campaign, but you can use this as another example of a creepily smug political operative who looks down on the very people it is his job to court.

    That's embarrassing.

  • I think my head is going to explode.

Even when I thought Kantor had said that word? It meant absolutely nothing to me. I just. don't. care. It has nothing to do with Clinton, nothing to do with Obama, and nothing to do with anything.

Frankly, I am more interested in what a former columnist for this very media outlet has to say regarding daily Obama-smearing e-mails to his former colleagues in political journalism, courtesy of the vast right-wing conspiracy. What does it say about the media? What does it say about the media's role in perpetuating unsubstantiated garbage "some people" allege is true? What does it say about how Fox News is setting the journalistic standards now?

Thanks for keeping tabs on the stuff that is bouncing around the echo chamber, Alex. I hope to see an entry soon about The Echoes of Blumenthal.

  • Exact transcript

Kantor: "How would you like to be clingy and bitter"

  • A new low.

This may be the dumbest sideshow this woeful primary season has seen yet. Y'know, there MUST be some policy-related aspect of the campaign that the media could be fretting over today, than whether or not Kantor voiced unpleasant things about Hoosiers. Give me a fucking break.

  • Kantor has never said the word N*gger.

Obama fans are disgusting. Kantor has never even said the word.

This is more proof of how gullible and sleazy the Obama cultists are. Embarrassing scum.

Mickey Kantor, who served as campaign chairman during Clinton's 1992 run for the White House and says he has offered help and advice to Sen. Clinton, insisted that the tape was a fraud and that he was exploring legal steps against the individual who posted it online.

"I've never used that word in my entire life, ever, under any circumstance, ever," an angry Kantor told The Huffington Post, citing his and his parent's work fighting for civil rights.

  • Salon is scum for leaving it an open question

Joan, you know it's false but your headline suggests it might be true.

    Salon's tortured idea of "fair."

    Disgusting.

  • Seriously

Didn't realclearpolitics say this was a doctored video?

At any rate, the candidates can bemoan the lack of a substantive dialogue about the issues all they want. The truth is, the media laps up things like this tape and steers the debate away from any discussion of importance.

A constitutional democracy requires democratic self-constraint to function effectively. It seems like this tape is an important reminder of that.

  • Just to clarify, Alex.

I know you and all the writers here at Salon hear a lot of trash talk from people who would not be very good at your jobs. I am not trying to attack you, or Salon. But both the Kantor and the Blumenthal stories have been around for the same amount of time, and one seems more relevant than the other, both to this campaign and to this publication. I'm just hoping someone here will address it soon.

  • I dunno. I'm sick of this scandal du jour shit, but it DOES seem like that's what he said.

And it would keep with the Clinton campaigns general cynical attitude that the typical American voter is too stupid to think for themselves. The pandering, the soundbites, the stupid attacks, the whisper campaigns, her "tough" stance on Iran are all evidence of this.

One of the things I like about Obama is that his speeches, particularly the important ones - like his race speech - are nuanced and hard to break into 10 second soundbites. It's almost as if he thinks we are capable of thinking like intelligent people.

I'm not saying I disagree with Clinton's cynicism - shit, Bush was elected twice - but it is nice to hear a politician address me like I'm an adult.

  • I didn't see the original YouTube, but

it didn't sound like that to me. Not at all. It sounded like, "those people in the White House are sh*tting. Sorry. How'd you like to be...White House? Look at Texas."

And, contextually, it's absurd. Why, in the midst of that conversation, WOULD he have said something like that? They were doing really well in Indiana, he was excited about it. Bad time to start being crude about the voters. If they'd been tanking, now....

  • This is really slimy

There is absolutely no question of what he is saying in the original (as I'm sure anyone who can read lips will be able to confirm instantly). The second instance in particular: Kantor clearly states, "how would you like to be in the White House." How anyone could "interpret" that as a racial slur is beyond me. Nothing of what he says has anything whatsoever to do with disrespecting Indianans.

Whoever posted this to YouTube is slime. And, to be perfectly honest, it is pretty slimy of Salon to even suggest there might be some substance here.

Final point: enough, already, of trying to slime candidates by tying them to other people. Let's listen to what they have to say themselves.

  • The word

Dragging this stuff out to club Hillary Clinton out in a guilt by association tour is totally insane, even though the guy apparently does say shit.

Should Hillary be subjected to weeks and weeks of media going over and over this stupid tape? No way. She did not say it. And even if she knew he said it, it still was not her fault. We still have freedom of speech here, well sort of.

Much ado about nothing. Like that story about a now infamous preacher.

  • Obama Supporters:

PLEASE don't use this comments section to run wild with this. One of the reasons why we support Obama is the fact that we are not interested in playing destructive politics. We can criticize her policies and her record and even her honesty, but this is beneath us.
