  • My Husband's Aunt Thinks Obama is the Anti-Semitic Manchurian Candidate, not that she'd know the reference...

When she stood up to give a toast during Seder, she said that she "hopes we'll all be free next year if Obama is elected." She believes he's a Muslim and nothing you can say to her will dissuade her.

Yes, she's a moron. Good thing she's an aunt by marriage, not by blood, and the rest of my husband's family has a brain.

  • How would this proposed ad be any different

than the ads run by the American Leadership Project, against whom Obama filed a complaint with the FEC yesterday?

I'm guessing there's some legal technicality that (may) distinguish between the ALP and this group, who call themselves the American Jewish Patriots, but it sure looks a lot like situational ethics.

  • put up or shut up koppleman

At various points, I've heard Jews who are otherwise solid Democrats expressing concerns about Obama, in part because of the blatantly false information -- usually about his religion, his purported connections with the Nation of Islam and his stance towards Israel -- in those e-mails.

Publish these emails or it didn't happen or is an insignificant outlier.

  • Why would Jews be against Obama?

    Reasons Jews should be pro-Obama:

-- Obama is friendly toward Israel

-- Obama wants Israel to find peace with its neighbors

-- Obama will work hard to make the above happen

-- Obama is very all-inclusive to religious groups

-- Obama has lived overseas and has a good understanding of many religions

    -- Obama is a mensch

    Reasons Jews should be anti-Obama:

-- Obama sounds like "Osama" and that's just scary

-- Obama was at a Muslim school once when he was 6 years old -- he's therefore tainted for life

-- Obama's father was a Muslim at one time, and therefore probably hated Jews and so Obama probably also hates Jews

-- Obama favors a two-state solution in Israel, as opposed to the current de-facto "expand until there's nothing left to give to Palestinians" one-state plan that has been implicitly agreed to by Neocons and others.

-- Obama hasn't said he'd like to nuke Iran back to the stone age, while Clinton has said she'd be willing to "obliterate" them.

-- Obama knows some scary black people who know other scary black people who are in the Nation of Islam

    -- Obama is a shmuck

  • Re: How would this proposed ad be any different

It's not a question of the ad itself, Green Job. It's a question of how the group registers with the government, and whether they're required to disclose the sources of their funding and the amounts recieved. The Obama camp's contention re. the ALP is that it has registered as a 527 and can thus avoid such disclosures, but that it really doesn't fit the criteria for a 527 and should be disclosing.

Ethos Bared, see this statement from the ADL for more about the e-mails: http://www.adl.org/internet/letter_obama.asp.

  • Don't you think the phobias are funny?

    "You b-b-b-better l-l-l-look out for th-th-them moos-lims!"

It used to be the Russians.

    Now it's micellaneous Muslims.

Jews and Muslims, you may have your problems with one another, but you have in common the same strict dietary laws.

That may not be the basis of a beautiful friendship, but it could be a start.

  • That'll do it! An Ad!

Thus far, Obama's had some trouble getting support from the Jewish community.

Imagine that. A Jew baiting weak on defense Muslim having trouble getting their support.

Obviously, the Jewish community doesn't represent a major portion of the country's population,

No kidding. I'm sure a full page ad will trick such a poorly educated constituency though.

but Jews are a solid and fairly important part of the Democratic base.

well, they were. Back before the left alienated them with all their pro-Muslim and anti-Isreal screeds.

  • What Jewish pro-Obama supporters have to contend with

Check out what Daniel Pipes has to say about Obama in the Jerusalem Post:

"Did Obama have a Muslim childhood?"

  • Will the ad sponsors have to pay retail?

Or will they be given the special MoveOn.org rate?

  • ShawnWM: Jew Bating?

Imagine that. A Jew baiting weak on defense Muslim having trouble getting their support.

I don't know if your comment was meant to be taken seriously or not, given your other absurd comments, but I'll bite: can you provide any examples of Obama's jew bating?

    I eagerly await your response.

  • ShawnWM: Muslim?

Also, can you substantiate your claim that Obama is a Muslim?

If these questions are too much for you, feel free to claim that you "misspoke." We'll understand.

  • Forgive me if I state the obvious with no solution...

..but before this Obama's a Muslim rumor, I'd heard the reason people believe these viral e-mails is because they have more trust in blather forwarded by someone they know than media reports, statements by the people in question, or logic. That's entirely what sustains the Muslim smear.

No, I don't know how to fix it, other than to respond when you're one of the recipients. I know I've done a little good that way, but mostly I just get removed from the mailing list.

  • Protection for the supporters ??

Based upon some of the vitriolic comments, I hope these brave supporters have some protection.

  • So -- nobody here can provide a single credible reason why Jews shouldn't be for Obama?

So far, not a single person has provided an argument for such.

  • The Viral Emails

I got one yesterday. Photos of the holocaust, claims that the UK has eliminated it from their school curriculum over fear of Muslim backlash. And how important it is to support Israel and never forget that holocaust. Disgusting, really, but that's today's GOP.

Those email lists probably have a few of your friends or family members that you respect and know have active brains. Only reply to those people and maintain a narrow focus on what facts are being butchered(never a difficult task), include links(usually snopes.com is sufficient). If none of the peole fit that criteria, then you probably shouldn't be on the mailing list.

  • jewish supporters fundraising for probama ad

    er, uhhh, . . hmmmmm, . . . . . . so ?

  • Jewish Group Pro-Obama Ad

Where their are 2 Jews there are 3 opinions. Jews have no high priest and no official clergy. Rabbi means teacher. No one speaks for Jews. Any ad for any candidate would be repugnant to any thoughtful, opinionated Jew. Let them save their money

  • @manos99

You said it beautifully in your last sentence. And if I may add, "a start" can be and often is a beautiful thing.

    Thanks

  • bobr900

Thank you my man, a start can be a starlingly beautiful thing.
