Oh, more whining from the Obama campaign.
Imagine, suggesting that your political opponents should obey the law! Does Obama think McCain's campaign will obey the law?
If the Obama campaign can't handle law-breaking from the Clinton campaign -- er, I mean, from people who really and truly aren't part of her campaign at all -- how will they handle it from people who really and truly aren't part of McCain's campaign?
-
What about MoveOn?
I thought they were a 527 as well, and they are actively campaigning for Obama. I am on their list and have been uncomfortable about them endorsing someone ever since they did so. Can someone clarify how/if this is different?
-
Watch the hillary supporters ignore 2004
Anything's fair if THEIR guy does it. Bad enough that they want to change the rules of the D party because they don't currently give Hillary enough of an advantage, they want to allow swift boating too. Disgraceful.

MoveOn
From MoveOn site. MoveOn.org Civic Action is a 501(c)(4) organization which primarily focuses on nonpartisan education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action is a federal political committee which primarily helps members elect candidates who reflect our values through a variety of activities aimed at influencing the outcome of the next election. MoveOn.org Political Action and MoveOn.org Civic Action are separate organizations.

Wheels are falling off
Moveon.org whom explicitly endorsed Obama, is variously a 527, PAC, and 501(c)(4).
I am looking forward to Bauer submitting a complaint against MoveOn on Obamas behalf to the justice department. Or how about someone re-surfacing how he won his Ill. Senate bid by hiring a lawyer to get rid of his opponents campaign due to technicalities.
There's a guy who is only interested in the peoples issues.
Pathetic.
At this point even if Obama wins the nomination due to his early momentum, his candidacy is a wreck.

Cue the people calling Obama's campaign "whiners"...
I was going to come in here and say "wait for it" because I figured Clinton supporters would immediately start calling Obama's campaign "whiners."
But sure enough, the first poster beat me to the punch! Like clockwork! Well done, you've earned my mockery.
You even used the old, "If Obama thinks it's bad from Clinton, wait till he finds out what McCain's gonna do" line. Gotta love the tortured logic in that one.
Remember, everybody: If Clinton complains, it's the righteous anger of an experienced leader. If Obama complains, he's a whining child. Be sure to plug everything into the accepted narrative and not use any sense of evenly applied ethics. This has been a public-service announcement from Grift Vote Shenanigans for Uncouth.

ALC Responds
Jason Kinney, a California political consultant that helped develop the group, said it relies on "a new and developing area of the law, but we've verified every step and are as confident as we can be that we are adhering to all of the regulations." The group actually aired $833,000 worth of pro-Clinton television ads in Texas and Ohio and had $300,000 left in the bank according to FEC filings in March. Seems like a
lot of fire power from Obama for a small amount of money
spent especially with all the union money spent on Obama.

Thanks, gabbyone.
Now can you please clarify how/if this is different?
In other words, if the ALP were organized as a PAC instead of a 527, would it be allowed to run nasty campaign commercials? What is the difference, in practical terms?

Calm down, XH
You missed the irony tag.

@melthough
"I thought they were a 527 as well, and they are actively campaigning for Obama. I am on their list and have been uncomfortable about them endorsing someone ever since they did so. Can someone clarify how/if this is different?"
You are correct, there is no difference. But it is up to the Clinton campaign to file a complaint against MoveOn. The Clinton campaign might be hesitant to do this because they may want MoveOn's help in the general election.

@sajwan
sajwan: "At this point even if Obama wins the nomination due to his early momentum, his candidacy is a wreck."
Early momentum? Try early, middle, and end-game momentum. Or didn't you see him neatly wrap up the Mississippi, Vermont, and yes, the Texas votes? And lose Pennsylvania by a much smaller margin than Ohio, in spite of Pennsylvania having every demographic in Clinton's favor?
Obama's candidacy is in a wreck only if you think being flush with money is a wreck, or if shaking off your worst albatross (Rev. Wright) is a wreck. Or if taking the lead in senatorial endorsements is a wreck. Or if having 150 more pledged delegates is a wreck. Or if (as rumor has it) having the superdelegate vote completely wrapped up but merely waiting for the right time to announce and all but declare Obama the winner is a wreck.

Calm down, XH
You missed the irony tag.
Indeed.
Does anyone know if it's possible to make the irony tag blink?

@ Xrandadu Hutman
Or if (as rumor has it) having the superdelegate vote completely wrapped up but merely waiting for the right time to announce and all but declare Obama the winner ...
As much as I'd like to believe this rumor, I don't. The "right time" would've been weeks ago.

Dear Idiot Letter Writers:
MoveOn.org is not a "527 group." MoveOn is a "501(c) group."
Their status does not, and will not change. It is not "variously" other classifications: as detailed in the US Internal Revue Code, MoveOn is a 501(c) organization, significanlty different from a "527 group," though both are created by the same US law (26 USC 501 and 527, respectively).
At this point I wonder whether I should correct your ignorance by detailing the differences or simply avail upon you to investigate for yourselves, think for yourselves, elide your own conclusions through thorough investigation.
I think I'll go with the latter, even if it's something My Fellow Americans aren't accustomed to doing any more.
-
Irony? What's that?
Is that like steely?
-
Sorry, no blinking irony tags.
Are you kidding? You can't even post a link. Perhaps you could create an Unmistakable Ironicon. ;0P maybe?

There is a Significant Difference
There is a real and significant difference between groups like American Leadership Project and groups like Moveon.org. The American Leadership Project exists only for the purpose of assisting Clinton. It was formed in Feb 2007 by Clinton backers for the sole purpose of bypassing financing rules inorder to funnel money to her. They are attempting of course to opperate within the law, which gives a rather large loophole to work with. Whether or not they are breaking the law, or skirting it, I can not answer - but their intent is certainly to do something that the law was intended to prohibit. Moveon.org, is another beast entirely. They are a long standing multi-platform group that has taken the unusual step - for them - of endorsing a candiate during the Primary. They do not not exist solely as way to help Obama, but rather have temporarly linked part of their support to him, because they believe he is the best candidate to more their goals forward. That of course is exactly the kind of group that is supposed to be allowed under the law in question. One of the key ways to tell the difference between a real 527 and a law breaker is whether or not they will still have any reason to be existence after the candidate they are supporting or trashing is gone. If they disappear like the Swifboaters, they were violating the law, but if they continue to exist and take on new issues and candidates like Moveon.org, no doubt will continue to do, they are a real 527 under the law.
