  • Comfort in America

I had conversations with 2 very conservative fellow employees about Reverend Wright both of them white. They said how he could be standing up there saying get whitey like that. I responded I didn’t here that but what I did hear was 9/11 happened because of the injustices of America on the innocent, and I had heard a white pastor say it happened because of the killing of babies and homosexuals in this country. One responded as saying that was different because Rev. Wright has gays in his church and homosexuality is a lot worse then… a pause he sat with his mouth open. The other gentleman said I will not say that. I left it like that but both expressed a level of comfort with racism when it wasn’t aimed at them. Who taught them that? Another group of co-workers who are African-American said to me how come when the Catholic church was exposed for covering up the molestation of young men no press statement was released saying to any Catholic politician leave the church now.

I think America is so comfortable with its racism if it were an industry it would be our largest money maker and our destroyer.

Who is this that would dare us to hope?

By the way has anybody seen any conservative white pastors teach against racism? Did there passion match that of anti-gay and anti-abortion?

  • Typesbad: Unlike Obama

Rev. Wright believes what he says.

Consequently, I have more respect for Rev. Wright than Obama.

  • The plan is the same as always

Each election cycle the republicans and the news media decide who is the strongest democratic candidate and then assassinate him or her with words. Just as was the case with Dean, the last thing all these comfortable jerks want is someone who will upset the basket of corruption and anti-American intent that gives these betrayers of the American people, so the pundits can live the lives they have grown accustomed do. It's easy. All that they have to do is sell out the American people with misinformation. The only thing left to do is to throw out my television and radio, discontinue my subscriptions to the NYT and the Wall Street Journal, try to help others do the same, and no matter what is said or what they do vote for Obama. He is the populist in this race, no one else. If people are interested in protecting their interests, the one person who is closest to being a person who can get it done is Barack Obama. It is not because he is so special, but because the other two do not really give a damn what happens to the people. They both want to be president so badly nothing and no one else matters. They are ego and delusions on steroids. And for those who think Obama is too right wing, don't they realize that the democratic candidate must move to the right for the general election just as the republicans fake that they are moving to the left. Just for the sake of discussion, there is no left wing in America. There hasn't been a left in the U.S. for decades. There are political and social critics, but they are not coming from a leftist point of view, just as the right is not right wing or fascist, it is just selfish and criminally insane.

  • detectors

The "only" reason Rev. Wright is an issue is because Barack Obama's opponents made it one. This is a non-issue except for those who had no intention on voting for him and those who do not have properly tuned bs detectors.

  • Daydreams and nightmares

Saintzak, perhaps your church (and mine too, come to think of it) were boring, but it looks like black churches of the Wright variety (I hear tell blacks have some boring churches too, just to be fair here) are extremely lively, call and response, colorful (sorry) sermons about current injustices - sitting in a stupor and daydreaming doesn't seem like an option.

The whole Wright thing doesn't seem important to *us* enlightened beings who talk here (well, there are a few troglodytes), but I don't think it will play well Out There. Obama was making us feel all warm and cozy and post-racial. Wright is reminding us that (many? all? certainly I'd be in that number if I were one) blacks harbor, um, some resentment, and that realization rouses up all sorts of guilt - which is denied by calling Wright racist. (He is, I suppose, but he has reason, whereas the anti-black racism of whites does not. His racism is righteous - and must be denounced lest we whites face up to some horrible history...)

Let's just hope that (a) somebody can get through to Wright, or (b) Obama thinks up some good way to deal with it, or (c) it's just one of those 15-minute things. Or (d) McCain and Clinton's religious connections get investigated and yield up some goodies.

  • Rev Wright

The angry guilty white liberal progressive candidate for President. We called Hugo Chavez, the President of Iran and the Nation of Prislam, but none of them were available for speaking tours.

  • I hope everyone takes a good look at this

Seriously. My issue is Obama is shared with Paul Krugman. When I read his policies in details he is to the right of Clinton. Clinton, truth be told, doesn't excite me all that much. Yes Clinton voted for the war, but you are seriously naive to think that Obama, had he been in the senate, would not have done the same. Yes the guy is a great orator, but he is also very new to the scene and his year and half in the senate have been somewhat underwhelming. In all fairness Clinton could have stepped it up too, however, you have to give her credit for pulling in various members of the right that loathed her for years.

As for Obama and Wright, can we now all agree that Obama is a politician like anyone else. He joined Wright's church to gain acceptance in the south side of Chicago and that got him to the state senate. He now distances himself from Wright since it's a national campaign. Is anyone all that surprised that something like this popped up out of no where. The guy has never had to do anything more than win a primary. As for Wright, look Obama basically went out in public, disowned the guy, disrespected the guy and threw him under the bus. I myself don't give anyone a pass on religion and I put Wright in the same class as some preacher from the south (I am, of course, generalizing). As for Obama, he isn't all that different from McCain - he does one thing and then when it's wrong he placates to another.

Can we please all agree that perhaps Obama is not wrapped in a shroud of decency and non-washington aura. The only thing non-washington about the guy is that he is so new. Beyond that he's more of the same and if you really get to the details you too will see that.

If he gets the nomination I will support him, but this mess, this utter mess which isn't good for anyone needs to get cleaned up now. For cripes sake people we are polling even with McCain. Wake up and smell the coffee and let's get this thing back in order.
