In interviews Thursday, the House Democratic whip, publicly neutral in the nomination race, delivered harsh criticisms of both Clintons.

Clinton is nothing if not shrewd. Although the 2012 line of reasoning appears possible and perhaps even logical, as I've said before, it seems to me that Clinton knows at this point that this is her one shot at the brass ring.

Clinton has to know that how she has conducted herself on the campaign trail since she threw in the kitchen sink means she is unelectable in 2012 if McCain wins the general. If she had bowed out after Wisconsin, a la Mitt Romney after Super Tuesday, she would've put herself in much better position to try again in 2012 if Obama went on to lose.

But that's not the plan. Everything she has done since leaving the White House has pointed to 2008, which is why she didn't run in 2004, when she might very well might have won. Unfortunately for her, another candidate came along that people like better, which has messed up her plans.

She's fighting so hard now, because she knows this is it for her. There won't be a second chance.
