Predictably, the far right has settled on a red-baiting strategy while attacking Obama.

  • Obama Was Really "Speaking In Code" -- Good Lord

"He was speaking to a bunch of millionaires in San Francisco behind closed doors!!! He was speaking in a code he knew they would understand, assuming no one else would hear.

    -- Sol Invictus

    Riiiiiigth.

I totally agree! Check the Beatles albums for the clues, man! Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash and they replaced him with a lookalike. And...and...and then they put clues in the lyrics so as to break the news gently to the fans!

Or maybe when Obama said blue collar people are pissed off about losing their jobs, he was right.

And, yeah, historically when people are broke and a slick Republican walks in and says, "The real trouble isn't NAFTA, it's really them damn Mexicans! And those damn queers in California! Get rid o' them and all yer problems will be solved" -- those blue collar workers have, historically, tended to buy it hook, line and sinker to their later regret.

  • "Much worse than Hillary's Opportunism?"

Wow! Hillary is using a dumbass comment by Obama against him. Who does she think she is? His opponent? THE NERVE!

  • Don't Forget Rev. Wright FOUNDED The Black Panthers!

A lot of Obama-lovers tend to forget the Rev. Wright once took a shotgun and killed 45 white women and children! He...he...also prays to a picture of Hitler everyday because he hates America that much!

And after he killed'em dead he then wiped his butt with the America flag, praised Satan, and then he killed a white politican with a knife and then...and then...and then he raped a bunch of white women!

That's how crazy Rev. Wright is! And Obama worships him!

    ----

The above was my impersonation of a fanatical Obama-hater.

Quick question: Can't you guys see how ridiculous you sound?

  • Free Fallin'

Who says you can't teach an old Democrat new tricks? Now, instead of defending against the old "elitist/commie" canard (again!), we find ourselves divided by it.

    Thanks Senator Clinton.

  • It's not different than the silly rhetoric from the left either

Everyone who isn't prostrate before the feet of Obama-Ra is Hitler times infinity. It's noise all around from all the retards. Enjoy.

  • Clearly Kristol

So predictably, Kristol has accused Obama of elitist contempt for the hoi polloi. Kristol, whose columns are a feast of condension and ridicule. In his NY Times column recently (2/18/08 "Democrats Should Read Kipling") he begins, "Browsing through a used book store Friday - in the Milwaukee airport, of all places -" Was he surprised to find a used book store in an airport, or more likely, a used book store in an airport in a blue-collar, rust-belt, fly-over city like Milwaukee inhabited by cheese-eating beer-drinking bowlers! Who knew those people even knew how to read! Where do the used books come from? Manhattan?

  • @chris49068

Ha ha. Yeah, the walrus was Paul.

But it's a fact. Obama would have been brave but stupid if he'd said these same remarks to a bunch of laid-off Pennsylvania steel workers. But he didn't; he said it to a bunch of people who share the same opinion of people in flyover country. And he said it behind closed doors in an event that was closed to the press.

And you, like the MSM, are missing the point. It's not the "bitter" that's getting him trouble. No, it's attributing deeply held beliefs, which are held in good times and bad, to simple fear and bigotry.

Remember, he used "cling to" not only with regard to religious belief and gun rights, but also racism and anti-immigrant bigotry. In other words, all these things are in the same category to him: illegitimate "false consciousness" that will be eliminated if they only wise up and vote for their great savior, Obama. That's why his lame response ("they cling to these things [religion, tradition] for comfort in tough times") was pathetically laughable. He's a terrible liar, and a wretched speaker when he doesn't have a teleprompter in front of him. Really now, how many times has this "great orator" had to backtrack and say, "What I really meant was ..."?

Read the Micky Kaus column I linked to earlier. He spells it out with devastating effect.

Quick question: Can't you guys see how ridiculous you sound?

Can't you see the number of logical fallacies you commit, from false analogies to straw men?

  • Kristol the pistol

The Crank who couldn't shoot straight.

  • Kaus? Really?

It was said, "Kaus gets to the very heart of Obama's problem, including his underlying arrogance and hypocrisy."

    Really?

I'm sitting here trying to think of a single time when Kaus got to the heart of anything. The man is quite simply one of the stupidest commentators since Fred Barnes.

  • Mickey Kaus?

If I had 30 cups of coffee and a lobotomy, I could write like he does. What you Sol, and Mickey, have done is ascribe a self-serving narrative to this quotation, nothing more. And the fact that you clearly don't like the guy doesn't add much to your success in doing so (the degree to which likability dominates judgment is underappreciated, not least by the quality of judgments made, which aren't always bad). Obama basically echoed 'What's the Matter with Kansas'- the issues being 'clung to' are wedge issues manipulated by politicians. He was making the point of why that works. The politics of economic disenfranchisment.

Even if you see that as condescending, which at some level I suppose it is, you would have to be pretty dim not to believe that McCain and Hillary and just about all major politicians (and most individuals) are no different. I mean, Hillary's now a gun lover. Would she really think that would work if she thought voters were as intelligent as she was- as capable of sifting through the bull (and not for nothing, I wouldn't be too pleased on another candidate for President about whom the label 'average intelligence' applied- or even was generous, as in the case of dubya)? Would campaign consultants be in business if the electorate was viewed as being intelligent? PR firms? And wasn't there a quote in the Abramoff scandal where I think it was Ralph Reed was promising to get 'the crazies', i.e. his evangelical constituents, on board? This was a moment of candor- verboten I know. And you and Mickey can have as much fun as you like reveling in it to edify your loathing of Obama, but don't go kidding yourself that you've discovered some truth. Closer to the truth is that you are just another mark waiting to be taken advantage of.
