In the face of widespread disappointment, McCain scraps his own response to the mortgage crisis.

  • Note the language:

It's McCain, so he "pivoted." If it's a Democrat, the term "flip-flop" would certainly have made an appearance.

  • Conditional assistance

...priority No. 1 is to keep well-meaning, deserving homeowners who are facing foreclosure in their homes,

Like most GOP proposed assistance it is conditional. People who need help might think that he's talking about them but unless they're White Republicans he probably isn't.

It's like how when Republicans talk about tax cuts they count on voters thinking that they're the ones who will see those tax cuts.

Maybe it's like the Republican Medicare prescription drug "benefit" that basically just shovels money to the insurance companies.

Voters in this country need to learn that when Republicans talk about helping other Americans, like when the GOP talks about rights and freedoms, that it's only help and freedom for a select few.

  • No Doubt some Democrats are Sensing Missed Opportunities

With back to back stories about McCain's flip flop on the mortgage situation and his opposition to the new GI Bill, some no doubt will wail that opportunities to hit back at McCain are being missed because we are still squabbling internally over the Obama/Clinton endgame.

Patience, people. Everything McCain is saying is being recorded, and there is plenty of time to make effective arguments about how unprepared and clueless McCain really is.

Besides, at the rate he's going, there will be no want of new material every week from McCain himself, even without the Democrats drumming up more. That is, as long as at least some people in the media (I'm talking to you, Steve Benen and Glenn Greenwald!) do their job.

One other comment: seeing the Mortgage/GI Bill stories back to back, I have to think that a lot of Republicans are getting awfully nervous about their nominee presumptive.

  • I'm gonna get a can of spray paint

And put the letters "B" "A" "N" "K" on my house.

    Then I'll get some help.

  • Give him a break!

Remember he said that he needs to "educate" him self on econimic matters. Obviously, two weeks ago he hadn't gotten to the chapter on mortgage crisis yet.

  • Reminds me of Bush

Remember when Bush talked about relaunching our space program in one of the state of the unions? I think we were well into the Iraq War, too, but he thought he could come across as visionary with his new plan. These two men are total jokes.

  • Are Democrats keeping track?

If Democratic strategists have any sense, they'll keep close track of this world-class, Olympic-quality flip-floppery by McCain for use in the coming campaign. (Nobody can expect the media to do it, since they continue their bizarre love-fest with the so-called maverick "straight talker". Talk about a Teflon candidate -- so far, with media complicity, he makes Reagan look like Velcro by comparison!)

It ain't gonna be hard to list all the 180 degree switches in McCain's public history. Just cite Position "A" with dates, versus opposite Position "B" with dates, for any particular issue you care to consider. The list is going to be LONG, and ought to be impossible to ignore by the voting public.

And the best part of it? Just imagine the anticipation, and then the sheer pleasure of watching the volcanic eruption of McCain's huge temper, when presidential debates bring up his flip-flops. This will be great fodder for someone like Tim Russert, who delights in hitting his guests with printed or taped records of conflicting statements. It'll be SWEET...

  • Yes, they are, RichEmery

I get occasional email updates from the DNC showing that they are indeed cataloging (and beginning to use) McCain's idiotic words. It's mostly for democratic fundraising at the moment, because it's probably too early to start with ads. You can check out some materials on the DNC website:

  • Debates

The previous post about debates made me start thinking of the fact that McCain is already angry at Barrack Obama about some sleight a few years ago when Obama criticized McCain.

Consequently, I think McCain is Jack Nicholson in A FEW GOOD MEN. He's just ripe for an explosion on the wrong stage. Obama's not a trial lawyer, but maybe Edwards can coach him a little on leading McCain into a "YOU'RE GODDMAN RIGHT I ORDERED THE CODE RED!" moment.

I think HRC's too chummy with him to effectively bring out the same response. Although if the HuffPo rumor mill is correct, he publicly called his wife a "c**t" once, which would also be really really really fun to watch on live TV.

If this were England they'd be taking bets on which expletive he will utter first on live TV. You can imagine the tote board:

    McCain; "fuck" 4-1

    McCain: "asshole" 5-1

    McCain: "slant-eyed gook" 6-1

Maybe the primary dragging is good. McCain is just accumulating rope with which he will hang himself later.

  • Ad Suggestion

Don't have the exact quotes or dates, so excuse the paraphrasing:

March 25, 2008 : Maccain soundbite on not helping homeowners.

April 10, 2008: McCain soundbite on heelping deserving homeowners.

Voiceover : In dangerous economic times, do we really want to trust our economy to some so clueless about the economy and unsure of his economic ideas?

I am Barack Obama (or 527) and I approve this message.

  • Not a homeowner until house is paid for

I dislike the fascist state as much as the next fellow, but McCain was right with his first position. These "homeowner" rescues are really designed to hold up asset values for the benefit of the Banks (who are insolvent). Homeowners with little or no equity are really just renters anyway, subsidized by me, a renter of a 12'x15' hovel.

These rescues are intended to prevent "owners" from abandoning underwater mortages and renting the (foreclosed) house down the street for half the price. The majority of people losing their homes bought something they could not afford and were counting on rising prices to make it all work out. They are not bad people for doing this, but they, like Wall Street, were ignorant of history.

The greatest credit bubble of all times has imploded, the effects are only just beginning to be felt.

Make the criminal bankers return their bonuses, prosecute Robert Rubin (for Enron machinations), and let's get on with the next Great Depression.

  • @ RichEmery

Russert? Presenting evidence of McCain's myriad inconsistencies? If that happens, I'm dropping a month's salary on the Cubs to win the Super Bowl...
