Huckabee's announcement
Huckabee is reportedly scheduled to speak on Tuesday, April 15 at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY - a patch of bright blue in a sea of upstate red. Stay tuned.

The Gap
I like this visual that Benen uses in the last paragraph. Falwell et al left a large gap. It is a gap that Huckabee will fall into, unable to straddle. We might hear echoes from him, from that chasm, but it will be little more than that. The republican convention will be much the same. With their cellophane values, they have nothing that America wants to hear right now.
Huckabee has been all but invisible lately - He had his 15 minutes, and that is all he gets.
Just my opinion, of course.

Huckleberry..
Just what the United States needs, a new and improved "conservative" organization led by a guy who thinks the earth is ~6,000 years old, believes in a magic entity in the sky and his/hers/it's kid; a white guy who was killed by the Romans and who's going to come back and run for president of the world. That's some kind of wonderful!

The Christian Right
The movement is stronger than ever. It owns the Republican Party in that, while it may not dictate the nominee, it can veto any choice with which it disagrees. And, as James Dobson proved in the Terri Schiavo case, it can even get George W. Bush to come home early from vacation (!).
The movement is just waiting for the Fall election and a President McCain to make its wishes known. And, knowing that he cannot win without their help, Senator McCain will promise them ANYTHING to get into office.
The fact that our central media talks about the demise of this movment just further demonstrates they have an even shorter memory span than a goldfish (three seconds, as I recall).

Huckabee may not be so bad
Judging by the campaign, Huckabee has more personality, better humor, a better connection to reality, and more humanity than the famous christianist bigshots.
Let's see what he does and says.
-
Great!
Another conservative Christian orgnization. Just when I didn't think my week could get any better.
-
Love it!
It's not just that I'm gleeful at the prospect of McCain having to deal with this during the GE cycle (although I really am, LOL!).
I actually like and respect Huckabee. Heaven knows I agree with him on almost no point at all, but there have been some odd areas of overlap. Huckabee gave a great response during the Iowa debates on the issue of education and what we need to do to meet the needs of a new era. In addition, his Christian stance on immigration impressed me. I'm not a fan of his gubernatorial pardons, but at least he showed guts, and (can we say it), true conviction to set of beliefs.
-
So...
Does this mean Huck's getting into the diamond smuggling business, too?

"Judging by the campaign, Huckabee has more personality, better humor, a better connection to reality, and more humanity than the famous christianist bigshots."
That's what makes him scarey and dangerous. Oh, he's harmless and he's kind of funny...untill you scratch the surface.

Not Roberstson
I disagree with almost everything Huckabee believes in, but nothing I have seen from him leads me to believe he would be the hate/anger monger that Pat Roberston is (or really, was...I've seen a few clips of his show lately and I think he's lost part of his mind).
-
Don't believe the hype
Sure, Huckabee is personable and nice and doesn't seem as crazy as Smitin' Pat Robertson. Don't be delusional. He wants to make the US Constitution conform to the Bible - doesn't seem to reasonable to me.
-
A fantasy
Imagine if Huckabee announces a third party candidacy for President. He would get a lot of donations right off.... from Democrats.
-
The Huckster
Huckabee is a sly dog so this is not surprising. At least I don't view him in the hate monger tradition of the previous buffoons in the genre. He's much too interested in self aggrandizement and looting the collection box to do much else IMHO.

RELIGOUS RIGHT DEAD?
Hardly. I'm sure, like Mothra, they are just in hibernation awaiting to be thawed. If you say "creationism" enought times in America, it automatically becomes "science." Or did you forget all about that part?
