Republicans are hyperventilating over talk that McCain is willing to maintain a U.S. troop presence in Iraq for 100 years.

  • Enough about his age!

But seriously, when they strive for this:

"Nevertheless, what we're seeing unfold is a coordinated, carefully-orchestrated campaign to get the political world to stop using the words "McCain," "Iraq," and "100 years" in the same sentence."

Do they think that it will still be ok to use "McCain" and "Iraq" in the same sentence? I wonder. Come November, if the Iraq mess is PERCEIVED to be improving, regardless of the blunders that got us there, I wonder how this will play out.

  • The Democratic candidate should only need one ad this November

"100 years would be fine with me."

Put the rest of the money in a big old sock.

  • You gotta lotta splainin' to do, Johnny

Here to help via TPM, via the New Yorker, Rick Hertzberger sums it all up nicely:

"But what the context shows, I think, is that yanking that sound bite out of context isn’t really all that unfair. McCain wants to stay in Iraq until no more Americans are getting killed, no matter how long it takes and how many Americans get killed achieving that goal—that is, the goal of not getting any more Americans killed. And once that goal is achieved, we'll stay."

  • I Think The Goal Now

Is to prevent the place from becoming a satelite of Iran. That probably means 100 years no matter which party controls congress or the Whitehouse.

  • and so

the best thing the Democratic party can do is to endlessly repeat clips of McCain saying this idiotic idea, and then ask, "Is this what America wants?"

Without name-calling, without worrying about what anyone's spouse, pator, or bff said, without worrying about anyone's haircut, or shoes, or horoscope, this is a fair attack on a specific stance on a specific issue that affects the entire electorate.

And I can't imagine the voters who would stand up and whoop "Hell *yes* that's what I want!"

  • 100 years 6 months at a time

McCain opened his senile mouth and said "a hundred years." That let the genie out of the bottle. This war is intended to grind on and on with the endless "six month" re-evaluations. I'm sorry, but did anyone hear anything even remotely new yesterday? All McCain did was parrot the Bush administration's talking points (I hate to use the term "parrot" since I have two macaws and both are far to intelligent to repeat such garbage). I wish one of the senators had asked the good General exactly what the troops are doing there. It all seems rather aimless. I also think they should have been required to present concrete reports on how our money (yes, OUR money) has been spent. Which specific projects have been complete. Detailed reports of improvements and evaluations of contractors' performances.

The man who asked McCain the question that got his original "hundred years" responce wrote a piece on the Huffington Post yesterday. He said there was no question as to what McCain ment.

    I Think The Goal Now

Is to prevent the place from becoming a satelite of Iran. That probably means 100 years no matter which party controls congress or the Whitehouse.

We could have saved ourselves a lot of lives, trouble and expense if that had been the goal five years ago.

As it stands, Bush has handed Iran a bigger victory than they ever could have achieved themselves: We took out their worst enemy (Saddam), and in so doing we got their second-worst enemy (us) stuck in a bottomless quagmire. The Ayatollahs should have been dancing in the streets. (maybe they were, and our MSM just failed to report it).

  • Worried They Should Be

My 82 year old immigrant working-class father recently cited McCain's 100-years quote as the reason my father will not vote for him. My father's for Obama, and this gives me real hope in these last dark days of Bush.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about the "100 years" comment.

With the nation at a debt of 9.45 trillion, we'll be going into receivership in the next few years and then the troops will have to come home.

Feel free to use this line Mr. McCain, I don't mind.

  • Yes I've been seeing this

On all the talk shows, repub defenders keep interrupting people who are saying McCain said "100 years", saying McCain never said that, or thats not what he meant, or saying he meant it in the context of Korea or Germany which is totally intellectually dishonest.

Funny, it seemed pretty straight up to me. He said it.

  • WES

Hey WES, if we adopted a policy of constructive diplomacy instead of, oh say... bombing and killing the residents of the middle east, I would personally have no problem with however Iraq and Iran want to ally or organize themselves.

  • 100 years ...

    What if he's right, though?

It sounds crazy, but ... there have been American troops in Germany and Japan for sixty years. There are, even now, more US troops in both Germany and Japan than in Iraq. Literally millions of Americans have served in Germany and no-one even notices or objects or worries about the expense.

And the surge in Germany is working. Compare the last sixty years with the sixty years before that.

Germany and Japan have gone from America's worst enemies to their strongest allies. They've gone from expansionist warlords to the most stable democracies. They took their neighboring countries with them.

If America can do for Iraq what it did for Germany, and for the Middle East what it did for Eastern Europe, then it would be worth it. No question, a blank check and it would still be worth it.

If America had been out of Germany by 1950, the world today would look very different.

  • McCain's century in Iraq

When you are 100 years old, a 100-year war probably does not seem as long as it does to the rest of us.

  • No do-overs Mac

The campaign of the dem nominee can be this video, the screaming at reporters, and the story of McCain calling his wife a trollop and a c**t in front of reporters. Just rotate those three for the next six months.

  • They Should Be More Worried About What McCain Just Did On Fox....

I just saw a clip on Fox News of McCain being interviewed and he was talking about Iran. He said, "They continue to talk about their nuclear (pause) I forget what it is but……"

He’s concerned about Iran’s nuclear something but he can’t remember what it is that is?! What is this? "Reagan: The Sequel"? Somebody better get this guy on some Aricept or something (if he isn't already on it).

I just sent this tip to Dan Abrams for "Beat the Press". I'll bet dollars to donuts he and Olbermann will feature this on their show tonight.

Now I realize why McCain needs Lieberman and Graham by his side constantly. This is starting to look like "Weekend at Bernie's".

    God Help Us.
