A top advisor to Hillary Clinton met with Colombia's ambassador Monday for talks on a free-trade agreement his candidate is against.
The letters thread is now closed.
  • "Sen. Clinton's opposition to the trade deal with Colombia is clear."

Or at least as clear as her "opposition" to NAFTA.

  • mark Penn is an idiot.

An idiot who will probably be a very close adviser the Clinton presidency, if she wins. So, while he's working on a campaign, he's attending a meeting about a trade deal that would work against the interests of working americans as a lobbyist?

Can this guy be a bigger idiot? I don't know. And it seriously calls into question Clinton's staffing skills by keeping him around. Her campaign would be leaps and bounds ahead of Obama if she had just dumped this loser when she had the chance.

  • Penn IS NOT an idiot. Penn is a WHORE. CLINTON is an idiot

Penn apparently will take money from whoever will give it to him. That's capitalism. I certainly think that he should make as much as possible. It's called whoredom, where you do whoever, in whatever manner they want, and work out the price in advance.

However, why does Hillary continue to employ this whore? The WHORE Penn ALSO works for McCain. This is true. He himself does not, but he employs someone who does work for McCain.

I myself would never employ such a whore as Penn.

  • dataguyx

    Is Rhandi Rhodes in drag.

  • Hey, I'm Randi Rhodes AFTER

    the sex change.

    Not drag.

  • No Fair

You can't pick on Clintons resident genius anymore. He hardly does any work for Blackwater now. Ever since it became clear the GOP illegal militia that murders people for profit was a liability, he almost ignores them. Now that is a moral standard that reflects the Clinton Campaign across the board.

His attending the meeting MIGHT be an insight about how serious she is about this issue.

  • Penn & Abramoff

Hmm, it seems the best way to make a ton of money is get it to get $$$ from both sides in a dispute.

Sounds alot like what Abramoff did with Native American casino interests.... See how well that worked out for him, at least in the short term, that is.

Hillary keeping Penn is disturbing to me on many levels, this just adds to it.

  • What I am not

    is a whore.

    That would be Mark Penn.

    I'm also not an idiot.

That would be Hillary or whoever does staffing.

Nor am I a credulous fool.

  • And Some People

    Select strange pastors.

  • Columbian Soldiers being Trained by US Troops

Columbia is our cat's paw in Latin America. The so-called 'drug war' is actually a cover to funnel millions of dollars in weapons and military support to Columbia, to fight or invade Venzuela, not just for counter-insurgency against the FARC. U.S. troops are training and advising in Columbia right now for this purpose.

In addition, to think that the Columbian government and the CIA are not hip deep in drugs themselves is to delude yourself. The 'anti-drug' canard against the FARC is a commonplace - to paint anti-goverment organizations as drug-dealers allows the social issues to fade into the background.

Clinton's 'advisor' supports this policy - just like George Bush. And Clinton's opposition to the treaty is, as one poster already noted, suspect. More electioneering until she gets in office... and then, the real "Hillary" can re-appear.

  • You all missed the crucical point...

This was a $300K Contract for Mr. Penn in his real job as head of Burson Marstellar. Sure they do a lot of lobbying for buisnesses and interests that Clinton says she opposes or questions, but Mark is able to seperate business from his drive to see Hillary elected. Needless to say, once the election is over, Hillary won't listen to him ever again and he will have no impact on the Clinton White House...at least no more than any other lobbyist. See? So it is ok. Hillary won't be confused even if the relationship is confusing to you.

BTW, for the Hillaryites out there...Penn is a big reason she's behind right now. Now, if she pulls it out, you can be sure that Penn will take credit, even though just a month ago (and, oddly before the wins in Ohio and Texas) Penn was distancing himself from the campaign. He's a swell guy -- sort of the Dick Morris level (the kind of people you often find behind the scenes in a Clinton campaign).

Anyway, the whole inevitability protected by firewall strategy is his. As, I suspect, the "experience" campaign (now highlighted by her combat service in Bosnia)is.

Here is the core issue: Penn -- and people like him -- represent what is exactly wrong in Washington. Hillary has embraced this system. Sure, you Hillaryites oft point out her policy expreience and the depth of her policy knowledge, but policy must be put into practice. When you're in bed with people like Penn, that hits a brick wall. Remember Penn is paid millions to make sure that policy is re-directed into paths that don't adversely impact his clients and one of the ways he does that is by whispering in the ears of his powerful friends (one of whom, at the moment, is Hillary).

Yet, in spite of the problems the Clinton campaign has had, Penn seems to survive. IMO, that doesn't say much for Mrs. Clinton's judgement...it feels like Bush valuing loyalty over competence.

  • Wait, I'm confused? Is this McCain or Hillary?

Sounds like lobbyists making calls right from the straight talk express!

Lobbyist do not have the general public's best interest at heart, they have corporate America's best interest at heart. So, that means, every day, Hillary is closely advised by someone who takes lots and lots of money from corporations, in his "real job".

Boy, I am sure MY voice will be heard on Hillary's bus!

Go fight for the little people Hillary, until the lobbyist to whom you owe your success come calling! I am sure Penn won't have any influence in HRC's WH. Just like Rove didn't have any in GB's.

    New Day

  • Oh, great. Now the blogosphere can yammer for days about who's lying and who isn't -- on yet another distraction!

A spokesman for Colombia's President Álvaro Uribe said the ambassador met with Mr. Penn to discuss the bilateral agenda. "There have also been meetings with the advisers to the campaigns of Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain," he said. "It's the embassy's job to explain Colombia's reality."

A spokesman for McCain said a team of policy advisers met recently with 20 Latin American ambassadors, including Colombia's. An Obama spokesman and the Colombian Embassy spokeswoman both said the Colombian ambassador had never met with an Obama representative.
