@sonofloud Can I imagine?

Can you imagine Cheney telling Obama "go fuck yourself" on the Senate floor?

Yes. We. Can.

(Sorry, I'll crawl back to the peanut gallery now)

anyone want to lay odds that those contractors

will turn out to be (if they're ever found) RNC types from right-leaning schools who have Federalist Society internships on their resumes?

Once is happenstance...

...twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action.

@ crawford

"some level of professional qualification."

I'm not sure that has been established. The political aspect, in spades. Competence, not so much...

"5) why was the news leaked to the Washington Times, of all places?"

Umm, Fox was too busy running clips of Wright and defending McCain? That is odd; leaking this story to a propaganda outfit, rather than an actual news organization, although the difference is getting harder to distinguish these days.

Friday, March 21, 2008 09:05 AM

Hillary Clinton's passport file was breached as well

No word yet on John McCain's passport file.

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:51 AM

It *could* be innocent

I worked for a hospital and several employees were fired for looking into the medical records of an injured NFL player that stayed there for a few weeks.

Curiosity + access = people do stupid things.

And frankly I can't imagine what anyone would do with Obama's passport data, he's certainly had a lot of scrutiny on him already. Unless there's a secret trip to Afghanistan on 9/10/2001 I can't imagine what they'd do with it.

Just keep it in mind.

Religion?

It seems obvious they were looking for whether he listed his religion as "Muslim" or not, because that would have been the most potentially damaging information you could find in an otherwise routine passport file. And they probably didn't get the answer they wanted, or it would have already been leaked.

Firings, Criminal Prosecutions.

First, let's be clear: "The System" did not work. And no simple apology to the Senator by the Secretary will do. And no one can claim that an "imprudent curiosity" which occurred three times, with three separate individuals, is not grounds for criminal prosecution.

Every failure within the organization is a MANAGEMENT failure. And what we've seen here is a failure in at least three layers (common in the bureaucracy) before it got to Rice. Any breakdown in management is under the purview of the Secretary.

Condi Rice has proven again that she's the most incompetent appointment ever in our government, and she needs to go. After that, every manager involved in this, from the first line up to the undersecretary, should be suspended without pay until a full criminal investigation is concluded.

We know that these "contractors" are hired by the administration based first on their political leanings, as well as some level of professional qualification. That fact should also preclude any further outsourcing of services without the consent of Congress, and any contracts by the employers of these three criminals should be suspended immediately.

@ blacktop

You're right on the money with this one. They could be funneling info to GWB and Cheney's Pet Rat Rovie and his henchmen, who would not be above looking at McCain and Hillary's info as well, and then forwarding the dirt to some 527 committee.

Rove is the J. Edgar Hoover of our day. Evil queen digging up dirt wherever, whenever, and by any means possible so he can use the dirt at the appropriate time.

This Is Typical Republican Dirt Farming

At least they didn't have to break in to get this file.

Remember the Watergate break-in?

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:23 AM

Maybe he can take a page from Hillary's playbook...

... and tear up on national television because everyone is being mean to him. Ya think that'd work?

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:18 AM

ANA

LOL Thanks!

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:13 AM

Blacktop

You raise an interesting point: don't contractors hired by this administration frequently tend to be, oh, CORRUPT?

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:09 AM

What wierdness!

Here are my questions about this bizarre incident:

1) which private company held the contract to do consular work for the State Department? Blackwater? Haliburton?

2)what prompted these contract employees to look on three (or more?) separate ocassions into Obama's passport files? Idle curiosity about a celebrity or malign intent toward a possible future president?

3) who did these contractors share their findings with?

4) why didn't higher level State Department officials learn about these breaches until yesterday although they happened several months ago?

5) why was the news leaked to the Washington Times, of all places?

6) will the cover-up of these incidents, rather than the initial crime, prove to be the more serious violation of law and ethics?

And yes, I am paranoid enough to suspect that Dick Cheney is behind all of this!

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:06 AM

Got to give Condi credit

at least she apologized which is as much accountability as one could dream of from this administration.

Friday, March 21, 2008 08:04 AM

Deja vu

During the 1992 Presidential campaign Clinton's file was opened by state department employees. Do I see a similarity?

Friday, March 21, 2008 07:58 AM

Peripherally...

...they also parsed John Mccain's passport data, as well. They discovered that he's so old (wait for it) his passport application was written on papyrus.

Friday, March 21, 2008 07:57 AM

More hypocracy

from the Bush administration.

How many years now has Waxman and others been fighting for files and information from Bush about: the environment, the oil companies, the firing of US attorneys, etc. Bush can't even find the emails.

Yet he's already managed to fire two people over this incident.

Now we have Rice apologizing lol

Can you imagine Cheney telling Obama "go fuck yourself" on the Senate floor?

Friday, March 21, 2008 07:52 AM

Cynic here

If these breaches happened in January & February, why were they suddenly reported when Obama was stumbling in the polls? Sympathetic figure or an effort to raise more doubt? Someone's pulling the strings.

Friday, March 21, 2008 07:50 AM

Ahoy there mateys! There's some strange skullduggery about

Did G. Gordon get his old job back again? Stay tuned.

Friday, March 21, 2008 07:37 AM

psychic network

Sean McCormack, a State Department spokesman, has said it was nothing more than "imprudent curiosity" that led the employees to examine Obama's file.<<<<

And he knows this is only "imprudent curriosity", how?
