Let's clarify what you are saying here. You're saying that you think a prime consideration in who you choose as a candidate is based on vague, conjecture-based fears regarding how opponents might attack them in the future, and NOT on whether they're the best candidate for your own party's interests, or how they're currently rating in carefully calculated polls.

Thanks for the clarification of my own ideas...but this is more than conjecture as you noted yourself. Swiftboating is a memory and without doubt an accurate projecttion. I AM NOT A DEMOCRAT and will never be one. Polls are funny aren't they. Whenever they go one's way they are carefully calculated. If not, they are unreliable.

To what extent has Hillary Clinton had to directly handle right-wing smears?

Are you kidding me?!? She has been smeared since 1992, and on her own merits/demerits. Whitewater was largely her mess and you don't accrue such massive negative numbers simply because you are married to someone. She is called the "bitch" in respectable circles. Obama has gotten a pretty free-ride in comparison.

blue turtle: "It is true that as it stands NOW, Obama is more popular and seems to be a better candidate against McCain, but what about in September when he is painted in racist, xenophobic colors, not to mention long exhaustive rehashing of Chicago housing shenanigans?"

The use of xenophobia against Obama will continue, but its effects on the public seem to be short-lived and negated as soon as people get a chance to see Obama in person.

Now this is conjecture on your part. Right-wing nutbags will not see Obama in person and they (for the most part) are not voting in democratic primaries. It is naive to think that there is not a machine ready to mobilize the morons against him.

But I don't think anybody should just take it on faith that Clinton is immune. That seems just as naive as anything Obama's people are saying.

Granted, but she has taken many more years of shit than Obama.

In the end, my heart might be with Obama. But I would not feel sad if Hillary had the nomination. The sixteen years is intriguing too. I could care less who has it...so long as the scumsuckers in now are gone, and that (barring executive order abolishing elections) is a given. Jesus, even McCain would be mild relief.

Thanks for your input and peace out.

Fair enough! I am sure they are coming up with many ways to attack Obama. Here's one of them:

It will be interesting to see where this leads. Sounds like Obama will have to distance himself from Rev. Wright. The sooner the better.

  • Sounds familiar

Where have I heard these sort of "piss on my back and tell me it's raining" lines before... somewhere in the last 7 years I think... hmmm.

I'm not sure I want another 4 years of people telling me that it's just yellow rain.

  • @Xrandadu Hutman

The funny thing is that for the first time since moving to NC eight years ago, my vote will count! And it's an open primary.

PS. I am leaning towards Obama after all my conjectures.

  • who cares?

Why don't Obama and Clinton focus on attacking McCain already so we can choose based on who seems better equipped to beat him in the general election?

  • @Hutman

You say: "Sounds like Obama will have to distance himself from Rev. Wright. The sooner the bette."

Obama cannot 'distance himself' from Rev. Wright. He may denounce and reject the statements in the video, but he cannot un-brand himself as a disciple of Wright, his spiritual mentor of 20 years. I find it so very odd that Obama's supporters fail to understand this. This morning's WSJ opinion piece is an omen. There's a deep streak of patriotism in this country beyond the borders of the blogosphere and it's political suicide to ignore it. In the end, this country isn't black/white/brown/pink/green - it's red, white and blue. Corny, huh? Perhaps to you, perhaps to nearly everyone on salon.com, but not to the lunch bucket guy in Cleveland or the soccer mom in Dallas.

  • @blueturtle

blueturtle: "PS. I am leaning towards Obama after all my conjectures."

I'm glad to hear it, and glad I wasn't a bigger jerk to you.

  • @KateTex

KateTex: "Obama cannot 'distance himself' from Rev. Wright."

    Here ya go:

KateTex: "In the end, this country isn't black/white/brown/pink/green - it's red, white and blue. Corny, huh?"

I personally think so, yes. Right up there with "These colors do NOT run!"

Anyway I think Obama is more than patriotic enough. The country was founded on the principles of dissent, debate and diversity. Nothing is more patriotic than that.

  • @Hutman

You say: "The country was founded on the principles of dissent, debate and diversity. Nothing is more patriotic than that."

Try telling that to voters with the bumper sticker you abhor (I'm not terribly fond of it myself). Or to the vet who fought in the Korean War/Vietnam War/Iraq War. The latter may not have been for their particular war, but they certainly weren't against their own country. Or to the children of those who fought in World War II. Or to those who are career civil servants with the federal government, or advisers or with the FBI or CIA or any other federal acronym. Point it, patriotism is largely an emotion - not an intellectual tenet, and it can run very deep.

  • @KateTex

Maybe Obama can sacrifice a goat to Toby Keith for penance.

  • goats

"Maybe Obama can sacrifice a goat to Toby Keith for penance"

And lose PETA, a vital Democratic voting bloc? Let's not get crazy. I say he sacrifices a chinchilla--they even sound like those damn immergrant furriners! That'll firm up his patriotic bona-fides

  • o'bama needs to apologize to American people....so does his pastor

O'bama needs to apologize to the american people for belonging to such a radical church....Jimmy carter quit his church....

O'bama needs to demand that his minister apologizes to america for saying "God Damn America"

O 'bama needs to demand his pastor apologizes to jewish americans for his anti semitic remarks...

how can o'bama preach unity and say he can unify Amewricans when he can't get his minister to apologize for america

Funny thing he wants geraldine ferraro to apoligize.....but what she was trying to say was not intended to be racists...

This was preaching racism by the rev Wright...

Of course when the heat hits O'bama he wants everyone to cool it.....maybe he can't take the heat.....maybe he wants to get way with his racists associates...

"God damn America" is offensive to anyone who is an american.....and I suspect that the good liberals.....will try to push this under the rug.....and sink the candidates ,,,,of mr. obama...

Until Mr. o'bama...get these apologizes.....and do it himself....He ain't fit to be President of the usa''

Jimmy carter got rid of his racists church.....Will mr. Obama...learn if he wants to be president he has to do the same thing.....I don't think he gets it....I think he feels he can....waltz...and waltz......and do a snow job......on white folks.....especially reporters who are scared.....scared....to challenge him on anything.......
