  • As if the "surrogates" have no affiliation with the campaigns.

Riiiiiiiight. Nothing to see here. Nothing will change. These are not the driods you're looking for.

The more apparent it becomes to the general public who has won and who has lost (it's already obvious to the candidates), the more vicious the attacks will become.

  • TYPICAL OBAMA KUMBAYA!!!

Reaching out to enemies like that.

  • I sometimes wonder how clear my picture is

On the internet, Obama is the hero: MoveOn, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, and Slate all either endorse him or strongly support him. Clinton is villified as a racist triangulator who will do anything to win the election and is taking down our party by feeding the right-wing talking points to attack Obama in the general election. There is no doubt that Clinton will not win the primary and she should really just pull out now so that we can begin to heal the wounds and rally around Obama. It is ineviatable that every Democrat will rally around Obama because McCain is Bush Lite. This view seems to be reflected in varying degrees on talk shows and in the editorial columns of the popular media.

But in the real world, people are still sending money to Clinton, and voting for her in enough numbers that she remains competitive with Obama in the primary. Reporters are still covering her campaign, and the right wing seems ambivalent about which Democrat to attack. Surely, if Obama is destined to be our candidate, they should know by now and be attacking him relentlessly - but since Texas they have backed off a bit, as if they aren't completely sure. They still reserve much of their venom for Clinton.

I get most of my news from the internet. I can't help but wonder if I'm seeing the entire story, or if maybe it isn't being filtered a bit, no matter how hard I try to get the whole picture.

  • good!

The only competition between Clinton and Obama should be to see who can better kick McCain's ass in the general election.

  • Why is this news?

    Breaking News!!!1!

Obama and Clinton today revealed themselves to be adults who can have a three minute conversation without losing their shit! Wow.

Hey, isn't there something going on with FISA today? I thought maybe I heard something, but *this* is way more interesting.

    Is Tim gone forever, then?

  • Makes sense

Both Obama and Clinton are charismatic figures but they are also both adults and neither of them want to give the election to McCain. That means they have a lot at stake and a lot of motivation to keep it civil and not totally trash one another.

Surrogates are just that. They may feel they are part of the candidate's retinue but they are not the candidates themselves. They have to be curbed and they often have to be told to go to their rooms or told to stay away from their candidates. It is the candidate's responsibility to set limits. To the extent that Ferraro acted badly, she has to be told that any comments she makes will not reflect the views of the candidate -- i.e. she has to be told she will be marginalized.

There are too many real issues at stake for people to hiss and spit at one another like aggrieved tomcats.

  • RE: Jebldmm

With all due respect, I think you might find a much different portrait of the campaign if you read the New York Times or the Washington Post. You might also listen to NPR or the BBC.

  • @jebldmm

Sure, people still vote for her and send her money, but that's in part because she hasn't yet conceded that the math is against her big time.

By presenting herself as still a viable option, and more importantly presenting any calls for her concession as attacks that she must fight off, she has a lot of people thinking she still can win the nomination, based partially on the hope that Obama will make some sort of critical mistake or that his popularity will wear off, or that her initial lead in the polls will somehow come back to rescue her via the superdelegates.

Those things are possible, but none of them are likely. And now that the fight has turned ugly (possibly until today, but I'll believe this truce when I see it), the media can't get enough of it. It's not partisanship or Hillary-hate, it's just plain old rubbernecking. They were pretty happy when McCain went for Romney's jugular (and frankly, took him down pretty clinically and efficiently), and they were happy when Huckabee cane from nowhere because that caused chaos (at least until everyone remembered the name Paul Tsongas).

So in essence, both things are true. People still go see baseball teams in September that have been eliminated from playoff contention. They still root for those teams passionately. But that doesn't mean they're going to the World Series.

  • In this hotly contested and contentious race...

...Obama may have saved Hillary Rodam Clinton, from her fall from grace. That is if she ever existed in a state of grace to start with.

  • Hold Your Breath

Hold your breath... Mark Penn and Wolfson are still around.

  • Who cares

Who cares what they talk about. The matter is about IRev Wright.

    About Obama's explantion:

Yes Obama, if you believe in IRev. Wright as your spiritual leader for 20 years, you must have good reasons to do so. Who are we to question your presidential and good judgement.

Whatever reasons you have, you do not have to explain to us because we trust you whole heartedly without question.

Yes we need you and your Rev Wright to make our country right and great again.

God Willing, we shall have our day.

And when you are president, God willing, you shall pay restitution and compensation to all decendents of the slaves and make thigns right.

Before this election I refused to watch CNN and MSNBC. Since the primaries began we have been watching MSNBC, and Ballot Bowel on CNN. My husband has even watched FOX just to see what the nuts are watching.

Last night we decided we need a break from all this. Theses news outlets just fan the flames on every divisive issue.

We sticking with sanity for the rest of the campaing...
