Small correction

Texas is split between Central and Mountain time, not Pacific. Big state, but it ain't that big.

Texas

"part of the state is in the Central time zone, while another part is in the Pacific time zone"

Unless Texas has significantly expanded, it's western most tip is actually in the Mountain Time Zone.

Texas time zones

I believe that Texas is split between the Central and Mountain zones, rather than Central and Pacific. The latter would be a bit of a stretch, even for Texas.

Time zones

Yes, you all are right, the change is from Central to Mountain time. I'm fixing the post; thanks for the various heads-up.

timely and concise

You know, this information about poll closing times and delegates was just what I was looking for today. Salon's election coverage is way better than that of the larger news networks.

Heh

"Unless Texas has significantly expanded, it's western most tip is actually in the Mountain Time Zone."

The last time I spoke to a Texan, I got the impression that the western end was somewhere near China.

Oh, it's even more complicated than you think

Our precinct caucuses (official title: "Precinct Convention") are only the first step. Although one may simply sign in with a preference and then leave, the precinct convention elects delegates to each county's convention, in proportion to each candidate's strength. In a few weeks, the county conventions will then elect delegates to the State convention. Only when the State convention occurs are the "caucus" delegates to the National convention chosen.

BTW, I can see how the time zone confusion can come up, since El Paso is actually closer to the Pacific Ocean than it is to the Gulf of Mexico.

Everything's big in Texas

I lived there during George W. Bush's governorship. He executed prisoners the way some people eat cookies. God I hated him. I couldn't believe people voted for him as president.

Ever try driving from one end of Texas to another? You'll think the place is in 3 time zones too. You can spend 14 hours driving, and all you'll see is 6 gas stations and 89 Applebee's.

In other news, so far it looks like Obama is winning Vermont.

EDT

Not to pile on about the time zones, but there's another issue here. "EST" stands for "Eastern Standard Time." Since we're in Daylight Savings Time until next weekend, the correct initialization would be "EDT," for "Eastern Daylight Time."

Sorry. Pet peeve. Blame the English teacher in me.
