Which ones worked?
Except for inside the febrile imaginations of conservative fabulists, Reagan was 0-for-Everything. Except, of course, convincing way too many people who should have known better that he was their friendly grandpaw.

Baker Makes a Killing out of Killing
He's part of the Carlyle group and has made a killing off this war, dollar-wise. James Baker also does big business with the Saudis and Abu Dabi (who are gobbling up companies by bailing out the Bush failed economic plan) among others. The fact that he likes McCon John should be more than enough for people to look elsewhere for salvation.

Why Reagan?
If you're going to make completely substance-free comparisons of McCain to someone admirable (to some), why stop with Reagan? Why not pick someone more exciting, like, say, Superman?
See, McCain is like Superman, because not only can he fly, but he's got x-ray vision, heat vision, and is more powerful than a locomotive. That's why he deserves your vote!
I mean, seriously, if they're not going to bother being truthful, couldn't they at least shoot for entertaining?
-
huh?
the way that was phrased it was self-contradictory. I don't suppose he meant it to be, but it is.
Although self-contradiction is required to characterize McCain.
Unless you prefer the phrase "completely opportunistic political hack."

Six Posts and not one of them civil, substantive or dignified
Not one post offers anything substantive or civil to the process. Obama was capable of providing acknowledgement of Reagan's attributes that got the Clinton's trying to parlay it into political cheap shots.
That statement was basically taking a look at what is obvious to many in that the Reagan aura being bandied about by today's conservatives does not conform with the way he conducted himself. He *would* cut a deal; he knew that some folks had to break with the party from time to time and admonished his staff to focus on "the 80% of the time they are with us, rather than the 20% of the time they are against us."
A lot of what the right hammers McCain for Reagan did himself, most notably with looking for a practical WORKABLE solution to immigration rather than an ideological stand to pander to the extremes within the party.
But let's not let facts get in the way of some good partisan insults.

Just what we need....
Great.... another Ronald Reagan. Reagan took a 1 trillion dollar deficit and with the help of George I, it ballooned to 4 trillion dollars. Under Bush II, it will be at 10 trillion dollars when his destructive tenure as president ends.
The lying liars and the lies they tell are destroying America. So... if you hate America, please... vote for John McCain... after all he could be another Ronald Reagan.
-
I truly don't understand this Reagan hero worship.
The biggest memory I have of the Reagan-Bush years is that a friend and I were the only 2 people we knew with jobs. Literally. For years.
This is proof that if you say the same shit over and over again it becomes fact. Reagan a good president? Bullshit.

Reagan was lucky that Andropov elevated Gorbachev up the Party ranks
If Andropov hadn't developed a feeling of paternal affection for Gorbachev and advanced him through the Party ranks way ahead of older and more senior men, then right now we wouldn't be celebrating the Reagan legacy because there would have been a nuclear war started by Reagan.
It was Gorbachev who offered the unilateral reduction in arms that began the end of the Cold War.
All Reagan gets the credit for is agreeing to meet with him, that's all.
Speaking of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev did make a pretty bad decision back in 1984. He decided that instead of giving up on making Afghanistan into a socialist country, they would try a surge.
Sure, the Soviet surge in Afghanistan appeared to be working at first.
But even without Stinger missiles, there is no way in hell that tribal Pushtuns would have accepted modern socialist individualism on Gorbachev's schedule.
Just like there is no way in hell that Iraqis are going to accept modern capitalist individualism on John McCain's schedule.
Baker has his head up his behind if he thinks differently.
Not everyone in the world is born with a craving for modern capitalist individualism.
We're used to it so we think everyone wants to be treated like an individual and have an individual vote in their modern, individual-based democratic government.
In the tribal parts of the world, individuals don't even really exist. You are a member of your tribe, your clan and your family, and any individual identity you manage to cultivate is the absolute lowest priority in your life.

@Gwool
Gwool, you chose a funny moment to demand a substantive discussion. The post we're discussing is how the current republican candidate is similar to the mythical image of a dead president from 25 years ago. No substance required.

Quote of the day
John McCain is like Ronald Reagan because, like Reagan, neither had or have their right minds.
Reagan's was attributed to a debilitating disease, McCain's can be related to a quick temper and general over all deceitfulness.
I think maybe Reagan's trickled down.
