The Arizona Republican, who's currently under federal indictment, resists pressure from his colleagues.

  • He wants to make it to the convention...

...so he can get the free liquor, cocaine and lap dances.

  • Why should he?

He's a Republican, which means never having to acknowledge any wrong-doing. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, he's probably got a very GOP-friendly USA to deal with regarding his case. Hell, I'd be more surprised if he was convicted than if charges were dropped.

  • Huh?

Doesn't indictment mean there's evidence he's not innocent.

It's all good, I'm sure there will be a few more innocent republicans popping up before Nov.

  • Why should he?

Your government looks smells and functions like West Africa. And those guys never resign unless you kill them.

  • Who's Pressuring William Jefferson to Resign?

This is the guy with $90,000 in the freezer.

    Under federal indictment.

    FBI has video tapes.

What democrats are demanding that he resign?

  • Republicans march in lockstep

...unless they are told by their colleagues to resign or stop campaigning for office. Remember Katherine Harris and her hilarious campaign for Senate in Florida?

Or perhaps he just got a good lawyer? They always react by making like they're going to retire at once, then they consult with a lawyer and suddenly there's fight left in them. Figures.

  • Politics of personal corruption

Maybe he's counting on McCain winning in 2008, whereupon he'll be promptly pardoned? The GOP politics of personal corruption march onward.

  • I am innocent!

I did not blow.... er wait. I was not in a bathroom... um, no. I didn't do anything wrong!

  • Indictment=Guilty

Since when was a trial necessary when someone has been accused of a crime? Gitmo is full of guilty people who have never even been indicted or accused of a crime. Why is Renzi any different? Oh, he is a Republican. Never mind.

    peace,

    st john

  • in fairness

I think any indicted serving Senator or Congressman should step aside. The reason is that they are supposed to be 100% committed to the people's business, not to their own travails. If a person is under indictment, it takes a huge amount of time and energy away from their actual job.

But I realize that's an old-school idea. I grew up in the days when holding political office was supposed to be a privilege, an opportunity to serve, that carried with it important responsibilities, personal and professional. I can remember some great servants of mankind and of this country who conducted themselves with dignity and a sense of purpose.

Robert Byrd, sadly, is one of the last left standing. And he is but a shadow of his former self. Where's the greatness now?

You mean like when Pelosi asked Jefferson to resign?

    http://www.airamerica.com/node/2110

Actually, many democrats have asked jefferson to step down, resign, what have you. He said no which discredits him and the party. And the republican calls for Renzi to do the same are...where?

  • Face it, there is no shame any more

This current GOP is totally guilt-free. They don't even both to pretend to be contrite.

    Sociopaths.

  • @meffert

You got half way there. pelosi asked william "cash in the freezer" jefferson, to resign from a committee, not from the house of reps (which she leads, and which has a lower approval rating than Bush).

nancy ought to push him to resign from his house seat.

For those of you with limited vision, the following Republicans have resigned (often for problems less severe than Freezer Boy's); Mark Foley, Newt Gingrich, Richard Nixon, and Tom Delay. There's more.

I'd like Larry Craig to resign, if for no other reason than if he's too dumb to know how to plead to a criminal charge against him, he's too dumb to be writing our laws.

  • Don't forget . . .

If he resigns, The Democrats get a clear majority in Congress.

Not that this matters, given the voting records of many Democrats.

  • Maybe He can't afford the COBRA payment

Maybe he just can't afford the COBRA co pay on his insurance.... must be a hefty amount on such good insurance provided by we the taxpayers. Kind of hard to come up with the three month payment when you're paying for lawyers to get you out of a federal indictment.

  • "(often for problems less severe than Freezer Boy's)"

Mark Foley, Newt Gingrich, Richard Nixon, and Tom Delay

Proof that people shouldn't try to post things that they think sound intelligent when they are high.

  • He will not resign

I will not resign and take on the cloak of guilt because I am innocent ... My legal team of Reid Weingarten and Kelly Kramer will handle these legal issues while I continue to serve my constituents.

    Ah, the Larry Craig defense.

What's amazing is just how many Innocent Republicans there are out there. Here's a list of a few of the sex offenders, plus commentary:

Tune in next week, when Renzi moves on to the next phase, the obligatory Stupid Defense. In this episode, Renzi makes the usual right-wing Republican complaint that despite his 'law degree' he had no idea that all those things were illegal.

We've seen this from the pubs so many times it's been scripted. Renzi himself is just another rerun.

That's right. There are more. Lots more.

In fact, there's so many more that we can't list half of them without overloading Salon's servers.

It's a lot easier just to provide a full list of the ones who haven't been hopelessly corrupted:

I can endorse all Republicans on this list with full confidence.

  • Let's disband Congress

And just have a free for Anarchic food fight.

  • "Let's disband Congress"

Can someone track down Cheney's IP and ask him to stop posting here anonymously?

  • @walter_map

    Thanks for the Support.

Your post acknowledges that many Republicans have resigned following unethical behavior.

From armchairsubversive it is clear that a number of Republicans resigned, committed suicide and turned themselves into the police. Your commondreams link does more of the same.

    I say good riddance.

Thanks for proving Strangely_enough, Anonymous (9:06 AM), and FreeProton wrong. Wrong in the sense that Republicans never accept responsibility.

I'm still waiting for an answer as to what democrate is asking freezer boy to resign.
