A photo of Barack Obama in traditional Somali dress, allegedly circulated by staffers for Hillary Clinton, sets off rounds of recrimination.

  • "Circulated" by Clinton staffers

What does this mean? Does it mean that they dug up the photo and e-mailled it to reporters along with a nasty interpretation, which is what seems to be implied by the Obama campaign. Or does it mean that somebody hit "forward" on an e-mail they received and sent it to their friends?

As for this feeding the "Muslim" meme... that's just silly. Obama looks ridiculous, like any other person who is on vacation in a foreign nation and has their picture taken in native dress.

  • Exhibit A

In why I am losing all respect for Hillary in the waning hours of her campaign. While I think she is certainly a capable and competent politician, this is the kind of garbage that the country is really eager to leave behind. It's win-at-all-cost, petty, vapid, high-school lunchroom politics that are as outdated as grunge music.

What really disgusts me is that in the death throes of her campaign, she and Bill are taking the low road while providing the rightwing with far too many angles, talking points and trashy material for the inevitable smears and disinformation campaign. It's getting to the point where I don't want to see some "Dream Ticket" of her and Obama. In fact I don't want to see her involved in the next administration at all anymore.

Go down with grace and class and maybe you'll get another shot but this is just more redneck trash the country has been drowning in.

  • Well, frankly....

...who the hell cares if this photo is "circulated?"

If the Obama camp thinks the photo is damaging to his image, that's their problem.

He was running for president in 2006 -- shoot, he was running for president when he gave the keynote speech at the '04 Demo Nat'l Convention -- so, if the photo is "damaging" now, it was damaging when he posed for it in '06. He should have thought ahead about what garb he wanted to be seen wearing.

  • What are the words I'm looking for? Oh yes:

    Shame on you, Hillary.

  • Smells

I think some of Hillary's campaign operatives are very capable of this...Trying to show how the GOP will attack Obama.

The photo is rather funny, and pretty typical American politician visiting another coutry. Somehow the polo shirt and kakai pants underneth, just don't cut it as a village elder.

The Obama campaign should gather all the photos of all the photos of U.S. presidents visiting foreign countries dressing up in native costumes and send them to Drudge.

  • "Hint: it is not the Democratic Party."

Yet this picture is obviously being brought to our attention via the Clinton camp.

This is exactly why Hillary is not only losing the nomination, but in serious jeopardy of permanently tarnishing her image, and possibly even destroying her political career. The left has looked on furiously, and for the most part powerlessly, as the right has smeared, cajoled and bullied its way to power for decades now. No sane left-leaning person I know has ever been jealous of these tactics, and wished that we could somehow employ them to our own gain. But here's Hillary, repeating the same innuendo attacks we are all-too familiar with.

Hint to the Hillary camp - the pendulum is swinging back, and you are getting caught with yesterday's fashions. They seemed edgy and extreme at one time - now they just look like what they always were: ghastly and repulsive.

  • Ohio and Texas

God I hope Ohio and Texas put this race to bed.

Clinton is sinking to new, despicable lows every day!

The attacks she is brining up right now are not any different from the ones the republicans will be bringing up on Obama shortly. But it's not the silly attacks that do Obama damage so much as the format of them. More and more, Obama is forced to defend two fronts. Weak attacks from McCain, and viscious ones from Clinton.

Think about this for a second. McCain is free to sit back and loft gentle attacks against the man while Hillary Clinton shreds all decency and does the really dirty work.

It becomes a rhetorical exercise to ask who benefits from the current dynamic come November.

  • God These Obama Folks

    Have glass jaws.

  • "The Clinton camp has put out a statement as well, not confirming or denying that Clinton staffers were behind the e-mails" GUILTY

Let me firt ask, when this is all over an done with and the dust has settled, we'll, once and for all, be finished with the clintons, won't we? Bill will be the drunk in the middle square ("Bill Clinton to block") and Hillary will be one of the old hags on the view? God I hope so!

So it looks like the clinton campaign tries a sleazy attempt to smear Obama by releasing a photo of him in traditional garb while visiting a foreign country (that's pretty darn common...and polite for a visiting dignitary). Tthey then have the gall to critisize him when he calls them on their offensive tactics.

It really is time for the Democratic leadership to speak up. I do like that Obama continues to fend off these slimey attacks from all directions with such ease and dignity.

Oh, and his poll numbers in Ohio continue to rise.

  • How stupid do the Clintons think America is??

Whether considering the circulation itself or their cynical non-denial, I can only wonder how stupid the Clintons think people are? I mean, I know their bread-and-butter are the less-educated voters, but still, this is lame even for the Clinton campaign. "Oooh, he looks different! I'm SO not voting for him." Whatever.

How about a substantive debate on how Clinton would resolve the delegate issue, or explaining why she won't reveal her tax returns until she wins the nomination (increasingly meaning she's not going to reveal them at all, in the interests of opacity, apparently). But no, instead we get a picture of Obama in Somali attire.

Looks more like the Clintons are segueing from Winning Ugly to Losing Dirty.

  • Does anyone have "Any" proof this came from the Clinton camp

other than the "SO" reliable Drudge...Go vist his site and see the virulently anti Hilary diatribes...Now all of a sudden "Drudge" is the arbriter of truth...You people are ridiculous...

  • Straight from drudge himself

    You show yoru face alex.

So your a right-wing hate site now? Really? Following drudge and the gop (clinton's included) now, are you.

Enjoy your irrelevance. Lie spin and discredit.

to me, salon has now crossed a line. you are now drudge salon (greenwald excluded of course).

I'm done with this site for good after this. This is my last post. I hope everyone else here who is an independant thinkers (non gop clone clinton included), does the same. there are plenty of site out there. there are plenty of right-wign attack sites, without salon adding to it.

Enjoy your irrelevance salon. I'm done with you after this on. Obama hit pieces every single day of the week is to much. Last post for me.

Peace. Enjoy the irrelevance you've earned gop. Salon is a clinton attack site, like media matters now. When clinton loses, remember that salon was on the gop's side. They will sahre the fate of fox rush and hannity, here at salon.
