The Sin and the Sinner
It's the kind of thing that makes you spit.
Not because I wouldn't vote for McCain under any circumstance, but because it has no legitimate place in politics as a matter of principle. Will the great "moral masses" out there in fundie land now withold themselves from voting? Will the sheeps' leaders abandon the standard-bearer any more than they already have?
And how about them Dems? Will they make hay with it the way the Repubs did with Bill's problems? (Probably not, it's too dicey and who knows where it will lead? They really are a bunch of pussys.) This is the presses war to fight and the electorate's nightmare in a country that still hasn't learned to seperate the sin from the sinner.
At least it's a woman.

"...at least it's a woman..."
Two posters (so far) have felt it necessary to add this exception to their comments about this McCain story.
Gee, hate gay people much, you (assumptive) "liberals"?

Keep your eye on the ball.
The issue isn't that McCain is banging a woman young enough to be his daughter. It is that he is banging a woman young enough to be his daughter who happens to be a lobbyist who has asked for, and received, favors before his committee. Oh, and he's a straight shooter.

The NYT story
should lead to a re-examination of the Keating Five scandal - McCain is running as a man of virtue - and, yes, he cheated on and dumped his first wife, and apparently had a less-than-virtuous relationship with this lobbyist (although he's quick to campaign against "special interests"), and scammed a bank and the taxpayers to cover campaign debts. What else is in that closet?
The Repugs will coalesce around him - they're probably relieved that it's an affair with a woman in this instance and not another toe-tapping Larry Craig. Plus, he's all they've got. They've not only tolerated, but supported, Duh-bya's subversion of the U.S. Constitution for more than 7 years. It will be amusing to read about the outrage over the NYT story from the right-wingers who voted to impeach Bill Clinton over a relationship which apparently concerned only personal, rather than political, favors.
This kind of revelation probably win't help Hillary a whole lot, either, as Dems remember the bimbo eruptions during her husband's administration - and who knows what dirt the Repugs will toss out there about him to take some of the heat off McCain?
I wish there was as much controversy raised about the Bush onslaught on civil liberties, torture, treaty-breaking, and mismanaged wars as there is when public figures' sex lives are peeled open.

@Juliebird
I read all four convoluted pages of the NYT article last night, and the sex part is actual very little of the scandal. Of course, the sex adds intrigue and extra spice for the starving pirhana. But the real story is McCain being metaphorically "in bed" with her, not literally. I agree, though, that if not for the sex, no one would be paying much attention to it. Sigh. I have always respected Larry Craig for not resigning because of a sex issue, despite the utter hypocrisy of taking that stand. No one should resign, or be entrapped or fired or impeached, over consensual adult sex, so part of me is glad he didn't bow out as he said he would. Here there is another issue, though - whether he tried to give her company political favors because of his relationship with her. So the nature of their relationship is actually secondary. I know, I know. Tell it to the National Enquirer.

McCain is a serial liar
Not only does McCain lie big, but I think he actually believes his own lies, which lends credibility to the suggestion that he was sleeping with this lobbyist.
If you listen to his denial that he has ever done anything to disgrace his office, you get the sense that he believes it as he says it -- as if the Keating scandal never happened, and was not widely reported. He is fucked in the head.
And he lies all the time, about everything, and reporters don't call him on it because he's John McCain. Let's hope that changes today.
(One of my favorite McCain whoppers is when he defends his opposition to Bush's tax cuts by saying they weren't paid for, like Reagan's. Of course it is a matter of public record that Reagan more than quadrupled our debt with his tax cuts, which he was forced to undo in his second term. Too bad everyone let's McCain get away with the lie.)

Apply Pressure Get Him to show his Stripes
I like the Pat Buchanan quote that if elected, John McCain will make Dick Cheney look like Gandhi.
It is truly possible to do worse than the Whore currently occupying the White House and one of those who would be worse is John McCain. His claim to fame is that he was a POW in Viet Nam and is pro military, which alone will get him a lot blue staters' votes. These fools will vote for him because he will be their saviour, set things right by escalating the war and drafting their children.
Big Media will be fully complicit. He seems to be their man these days.

McCain repeats history
Lets see, McCain cheated on his first wife when he got back from Vietnam. Dated a stipper. Had the Keating 5 scandal for influence peddling. Seem familiar? McCain is full of it and is trying to bluff his way past a reminder of what he is really like. But do you think repubs will care? Nope.

Party of Adulterer's
Why not rename the republican's the pervert party there are so many homo's and adulterer's like Newt, the late Henry Hyde, Dan Burton,Craig just to name a very few of many. Yet they never let up on Bill Clinton even after the above named were impeaching him. Now old hottempered McCain is in the limelight wonder how long the republican's will remember if McCain says I never had sex with that woman? Very few they will defend him no matter what he's done like they always do.

"at least it's a woman"????? Have you LOOKED at the photos of Cindy McCain.
That ain't no HUMAN woman I've ever seen. It's clearly a model CLH-54 'borg unit complete with BarbiTone platinum hair and full mucusoid duvetyne pleasure pak.
I had one of those models in the 90's, but post-millenium I traded it in on one of thenewed models, with greatly improved small-motor skills and BlueTooth technology.
She's pretty outdated now, and it explains his choice of the VI-68 replacement lobbyist he's been spotted with...
