What goes around...
Comes around.
Turns out everyone is doing it.
How do you like them apples?

I feel dirty
I feel dirty after reading that article. What is wrong with us? At first I was overjoyed that it was happening to one of them. ...him, in fact.
Then I read the joyous reader responses, and I'm ashamed. He probably did those things, and maybe he deserves what's coming. I sure hope Obama and Clinton keep their traps shut about this though, and just let it play out with the GOP crowd. There's only one thing sure about slinging mud - everyone ends up dirty.

Wasn't this relevant months ago?
As for Drudge, as might be expected for the conservative media guru, he's questioning the Times' timing;
He's right of course. The Republican voters had a right to know what they are voting for. Why did the Times wait? Why did they sit on the wiretapping story? I recall the reason given at the time: It might have influenced the voting. In other words: We The People aren't entitled to make our own decisions. The Times will save us from worrying our pretty little heads about these issues.
As for McCain's campaign spokeswoman: That is a most self serving, contemptible statement. This American is sick of gutter politicians. Hanging out with lobbyists, flying on their private jets, how can this not reek of corruption?

At McCain's Press Conference
He is acting abnormally calm and un-McCain-like. Contrite, almost. Contrast that to his angry reactions over the past few weeks when asked whether he was conservative enough, and numerous other cases when he not only gets mad, but gets mad fast, and continues to seethe.
I reckon we'll be hearing more about this.
Ironically, I was just reading a Salon piece yesterday about McCain's affair with his now-wife some years ago, in which he dumped his first wife - a former model and the mother of his first three kids -- after she got into a serious auto accident which led to physical limitations and deformaties.
What goes around, apparently does come around.

Good Journalism
I'm as critical of today's journalism as anyone else, but any characterizations of this story being "dirty" or improper are way off the mark. I read a couple of posts saying it was based on innuendo and anonymous sources. Read the story -- at least one former member of McCain's staff is quoted by name. Plus, the nature of the relationship between McCain and the lobbyist is at best an inconsequential part of the story, which is about McCain's potential abuse of his position to grant favors based on personal ties. There is more than enough evidence and information exposed in the story - never mind the additional material that reporting most likely produced that is not in the story -- to warrant its publication. The media's job is to disclose information to the public, which is then free to make a determination of its value. The Times' story easily fits that qualification. Had they suppressed this information, then it would have been bad journalism. As far as the timing, unless you have some insight regarding the issues involved inside the Times' editorial operation, it's impossible to assume that the timing was politically motivated. I'm sure all of these issues will come out, just as the Times' explained its reasoning for waiting until after the election to publish information about the Bush administration's illegal wiretapping. As one poster mention, the details around the timing of the story, when disclosed, will likely shine more light on some of the background research that went into the story. In short, the Times did its job by disclosing important news about a national figure. You are free to consider it unimportant or very important.

@ Alan Lloyd if nothing of substance was there, it would have died quickly. That's the point you're missing.
Oh, right. Like all the false accusations against Max Clelland died? Get real. Slimebags toss crap out there and know damned well it will stick, because lots of people love pointing fingers and beating the shit out of ANYONE they *need* to demonize. Ot generally works, too.
Too bad the reighwing hate machine made it *necessary* to flush $70mil-plus of taxpayers' dough down the toilet trying to take down Bill Clinton.
Die quickly? Get real.

Wounds McCain with social conservatives; makes Obama look like Mr. Clean
Clinton is helpless to make hay of it.
I suspect there will be a 15% third candidate spoiler in the general, stealing mostly from McCain. Maybe this will be a boot for Ron Paul?
-
I meant boost, not boot.
for Ron Paul.
More coffee, please.

Not only is the story fair game...
...McCain deserves it.
He is the farthest thing from a straight talker -- he just plays one on TV. On issue after issue, whether process or policy related, he is all over the map. He is a corrupt bag man for industry and has no integrity.
The statement from his campaign is laughable. Because he claims the high road, he should not get bad press -- even if true? It's not like the facts at issue in the story don't bear directly on his campaign: doing favors for money contradicts his avowed raison d'etre and the likely philandering is clearly fair game for the party that impeached a president for a blow job.

McCain said:
"...At no time have I ever done anything that would betray the public trust, nor make a decision which in any way would not be in the public interest and would favor anyone or any organization..." Bullshit. What about the Keating Five??? And don't tell me that he was on the periphery of that scandal. He took more money than any of the other Keating Five, and his wife and father in law were on on the dirty dealing.
As I have written in numerous posts on Salon, McCain is dirty and corrupt - one of the worst in this Congress. His straight talk is all bullshit. If we had serious media, he would not have gotten as far as he has.
A few points: McCain hired Bob Bennett, one of the meanest, baddest, and most talented swinging legal dicks in Washington. (Bill Clinton hired him to help him with his zipper problems.) You don't hire Bennett unless you are in BIG trouble. You can bet that the NYT and their lawyers have gone every detail to vet that story. That Bennett could not, via threats and intimidation, stop that story speaks volumes. And it is not all anonymous sources. John Weaver has been with McCain for years. And take a hard look at the others who left McCain's campaign last year.
McCain screwed women who were subordinate to him when he was on active duty. He cheated on his first wife, and dumped her for a younger prettier richer woman. He has screwed around for hears. It has been an open secret for years - like Craig's proclivities.
It is my understanding that Mill Romney did not end his campaign - he suspended it. I think he can come back and still be in the race. And Huckabee!! He's been waiting for McCain's macaca moment and it came.
For those who think we are wasting time on unimportant items when our soldiers are dying in Iraq, and Bush continues to shred the Constitution, and the economy continues down the toilet: You're right. I'd rather have a serious discussion about McCain's fantasy of 100 years in Iraq. But if sex is what gets him taken down, so be it.
