An examination of the responses of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to the biggest beef recall in U.S. history.

  • Just noticing that Obama has no substance?

    Doesn't matter -- he's the big B.O. -- he doesn't need substance.

  • Yeah.

If they would stop taking money from Big Ag.

  • "he doesn't need substance."

In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes to others one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions.

  • Strangely enough

spoken like a true disciple of B.O. -- ignore the fact that his response doesn't say anything -- attack me instead -- well guess what, bub, I'm not the one running for president on empty promises.

  • Clinton wins the topical memo award for the day

I dunno, Obama's memo wasn't so bad considering today is a huge primary and fixing the nation's tainted beef problem isn't something anybody could realistically pin down in a day or two.

  • More f a Threat Than You Might Think

The USDA can withdraw its inspectors in order to pressure the company, but not much more, and those inspectors aren't really so useful in the first place.

Considering that companies that do not have inspectors are not allowed to sell meat in the US, this amounts to a shutdown. So the threat actually has a fair amount of clout.

  • Better...

At least this story is an original one based upon a topic that has relevance to every American in their daily lives.

    Much appreciated Alex. Yeah!

  • Interesting that...

...on an issue that is a REAL issue in the everyday lives of people, a vanishingly few Salon readers have even bothered with this thread.

So do people really care about the actual issues, or not?

And once again, Clinton presents specifics, while Obama presents...whatever that lightweight thing you quoted, Alex.

  • Quick action is not what's needed

This is crazy. No politician or bureaucrat should be expected to come out with a complete and substantive policy a day or two after an issue becomes raised. Granted it would have been great if these had been released BEFORE the recall ... but they weren't.

Any good politician, bureaucrat or the like should never rush to a solution on a complex problem. Serious solutions require spending time with people who understand that situations and deal with them on a regular basis. Snap solutions lead to things like innefective bureaucracies and worse ... war.

  • hmm

This may have just changed my vote from Obama to Clinton. DAMMIT, I thought I was ready...at least I have a couple more weeks till we vote in Texas to decide.

  • @Mike J Y Wood

...or a real leader (who has done her homework) would know that we have major safety issues in our food supply that need to be addressed, hopefully before a disaster occurs.

  • "ignore the fact that his response doesn't say anything" - Anonymous (must cite, ya know?)

Actually, I'm pointing out the fact that your response "says nothing"(Anonymous). If that is considered "attack[ing]" (Anonymous), you have an awfully thin skin for someone posting the nonsense you do. They are both statements from political campaigns- that is a guarantee of substance free talking points. If you haven't figured that out yet, you're in for years of disappointment.

  • Stay on subject. This means you Factcheck

Hey Factcheck, leave the cheerleading for sports.

Stay on topic of forum, go promote your conspiracy theories on a story about Excelon.

I think it wouldn't be prudent to try and solve a national problem over the course of two days.

Hillary has some concrete ideas she'll have to stick to, regardless of what any investigation turns up. If her ideas are not what is required to solve the problem, she'll look silly.

Obama, should have presented something alittle more substancial. I will be diffrent is a little vague. I'm an Obamican and I must agree this is a little weak.

I think she took the day. (except the results for the caucuses aren't in yet)

  • Democracy and Constitutional Rights are more Important Questions!

There's something much more important and it is this: Would the Democrats make America safe from Fascists and War Mongers such as has been the ongoing case with the Bush Regime? The answer based upon the evidence is a big NO! The Democrats were given a majority in Congress,by the U.S. voters, expressly to block and undo the fascist war mongering and the destruction of the US Constitution by the Bush Govt..

Instead the Democrats have rubber stamped and Ok'ed every war funding bill Bush has asked for plus they have aided & abeted Bush in his "illegal" domestic spying programs and his destruction of the US Constitution, especially concerning human rights!

So in light of the Bush Regime's ongoing criminal actions, the objective judgement has to be,that neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are going to "protect" or "uphold" either democracy or the human rights guaranteed in the US Constitution for American citizens.

  • Holy mad cow!

Obama orates: I will also call on the Department of Agriculture to examine whether federal food safety laws need to be strengthened, in particular to provide greater protections against tainted food being used in the National School Lunch Program.

Well, ain't that reassuring? He'll "call on" USDA to examine whether or not they've been f**king up on food safety?

Obama's "leadership" sounds like the Bush administration announcing that the Justice Department would investigate whether AG Gonzales gave misleading testimony to Congress.

The fox watching the hen house, Obama?

  • wow, want a glass of water

to go with that almost-comlpiment (only slightly back-handed)for HRC you had to spit out between your clenched teeth?

Look, I wouldn't expect either candidate to have a thorough, nuanced and fully ready-to-implement plan within hours of such a story, on a primary day. But HRC's response suggests that she's *thought* about the FDA and the food supply before reading today's headlines.
