  • Does irony of that statement...

...given the context, i.e. in a campaign speech, escape her, or her speech writer, or anyone listening?

  • Flatblonde

Yeah, I agree. The line about change is going to come anyway is pretty funny. Like he doesn't stand for anything else.

Obama is getting out there and doing things besides giving the stump and discussing his policy proposals. They know what Hillary was going to do, they are ready for this type of stuff. She's backed into a corner, only thing she has left to do is fight dirty.

Also, people might want to believe that going negative doesn't get you anywhere but at this stage in the game, it can give you a decent boost. People do respond to negative campaigning even though they say they don't like it normally. It is more effective than some give it credit.

You said: I find Hilary's logic on this really screwy

How so? Please explain where her logic is weak in this particular speech. Name one thing she said that is not true. I challenge you: Stick to the speech and don't bring in extraneous issues. No, not the war damn it. I am sick of hearing about the war, since the vote on it is over. Tell me what contradicts the things she actually mentions in this particular speech. Stick to the subject and don't create a smokescreen.

Hillary spoke about those green jobs months ago. Obama is just now doing it and all but replicating what she said. At the root of what she is saying is that instead of coming up with original ideas in those areas, he is piggybacking on hers.

  • Hitting her stride...

It seems a bit late; but that is exactly how Clinton should have been challenging Obama from the beginning.

I hope people are still able to hear the differences. Actions matter. Speeches do not.

  • vmcla1, do actions include...

    ...casting votes?

If not, which "actions" are you referring to?

And, since Hillary won't explain, can you explain her voting record on Iraq? On Iran? On (opposing) sentencing reform? Or failing entirely to vote on telecom immunity.

Just a bit perplexed about these wonderful "actions" you speak of.

Oh I see, pointing out that Hillary is a power hungry witch who only desires power for power's sake makes me sound like a Rush guy?

I guess you're constant critiquing of Obama's inexperience and lack of concrete posititions makes you sound like David Duke.

Mazel Tov, you get to spend a week with Ann Coulter in the crematorium of your choice...

    Moron.

  • but according to Paul Krugman Hillary "stole" John Edwards' health plan....

so does she give herself the same kick in the pants for a "lack of ideas"? No?

    --just wondering!

  • "No matter how Hillary voted."

That's not an excuse; that's a condemnation. It didn't matter that I gave a pyromaniac the matches, because the building was going to fall down anyway.

  • Speeches don't matter?

Do they matter more or less than pre-scripted town halls? Where exactly on the hierarchy of staged spontaneous events do they fall?

  • Stop the madness!

You know, if my only contact with Clinton or Obama supporters was Salon's commenters, I'd probably give up on politics all together. What a bunch of nasty, unreasonable people many of you are. Yes, Clinton's played dirty pool. Yes, Obama's played dirty pool. Do I like it from either of them? No. Nor do I think Clinton supporters are war apologists or DINOs or that Obama supporters are delusional cultists. And what, exactly, for those of you who seem to delight in spewing knee-jerk, baseless viciousness, is your point? Are you trying to persuade others to support your candidate? Does it make you feel good to attack others? Are you simply declaring that you're right, and the "other side" is wrong? Seems like the typical method of "argument" of the nuttiest of the right-wingers. Can we possibly raise the level of "debate" just a little bit above the Anne Coulter mark?

    Thank you.

  • I Take It Then

That you don't think Obama is on a quest for power.

  • When...

She comes up with a solution to that pesky lack of delegates problem that she's got, get back to us.

  • @Axordil

Official ranking, from the Clinton website:

    1) Fake tears

    2) Staged Town Hall Meetings

    3) Hallmark Channel Informercials

    4) Debates Not Held (but complained about)

    5) Debates Actually Held

    6) Speeches

It's really not that different from the small state/big state strategy they seem to have where they desparage Obama's track record winning small states (like NE, WA, CT) while they pimp the fact that they won Arkansas...either they count or they don't.

  • Is It Possible

To go lower than that level of infantile analysis-------It's Mr. Hero versus the witch.

  • the flaming of the shrew

Ah, the smell of Clinton desperation, dung-slinging tap dancing in a room of smoke and mirrors. By the odor, I'd say she's about done. Get the fork out; tell the endomorphic female to warm her pipes. Two more ample ass kickings coming up Tuesday. love, heywood

  • cytheria45...

...as they say in Hillaryland, you go girl!

Honestly, I can't tell whether you're a hardcore Clinton supporter as you present yourself, or rather some pissed-off loose cannon, perhaps upset about Edwards' failed run, and so have now transformed yourself into a parody of a Clinton supporter, evincing all those traits that you know will drive voters away from her.

I've decided it doesn't matter. Your a boon to Obama either way.

  • Hillary Done?

Her worst case scenario now is being V.P. and Obama going to her to find out what to do and how to do it.

  • Speeches do matter

Obama's speeches fill me with optimism and hope about our country, and not just a head rush rock star optimism, but an optimism that is based upon a commitment to working out our problems as a nation across party lines. He's firing up American citizens who have grown cynical and complacent and reminding a good many of us that we can actually have a positive impact upon our nation through our deeds.

When I listen to Clinton's speeches they seem like sound bites from 1993. She's a capable and highly intelligent politician but it all seems old hat. Obama is talking about today, and most importantly, where we're going to take the country in the future. The Clinton campaign seems like a long episode of "I Love the 90's" on Vh1.

The politics in our nation has been in a rut for 18 years, where it was Bush/Clinton/Bush and now, perhaps, Clinton again. I'm weary of dynasties. This is a democracy. Time for a fresh start. Time for a change.
