The Shuster fallout

Reaction continues to comments MSNBC's David Shuster made about Chelsea Clinton being "pimped out" on behalf of her mother's campaign.

The letters thread is now closed.

Even your article gets it wrong

She ain't calling for them to fire shuster. She's calling on them to change behavior. That's why the apology has not been accepted.

If they actually change the behavior then maybe Clinton will accept it.

Shuster has a history./....

David Shuster has a history. His unfortunate use of language was not the first time he offended women. He gave a crude imitation of Joy Behar of The View, complete with high pitched screechy voice. It was disgusting, but no apology was made then. He has also been a reliable sidekick for Chris Matthews in the thousand and one times that Matthews disparaged Clinton in a gross manner. Your inability to remember these moments is part of the problem. There is an undercurrent of sexism in this country, even amontg liberal men. In the civil rights movement women were the designated coffee makers and sex partners. Too many men find strong women, especially if they're smarter, a threat. There's something very wrong in the way we raise our sons and daughters.

"Context is everything"

If he had been talking about Michelle Obama and had suggested that Obama was "pimping out" his wife or his children, he would have been fired on the spot (and rightly so), but suggesting that Clinton was "pimping out" her daughter is apparently not that serious. Yes, context is everything. I just don't know what context allows someone to suggest that a woman is treating her daughter like a prostitute. Maybe there is some usage that means something very different than what I am familiar with. I've heard of "Pimp My Ride", but that usage doesn't seem to apply here - he wasn't suggesting that Clinton was dressing her daughter in a trashy manner.

Irony

Slate continues by pointing out that Hillary's answer to a University of Virginia student's question today of "who is the most influential person in your political career?" was Nelson Mandela because of his capacity for forgiveness. Hillary quoted Mandela, saying, "you have to give up whatever hate you have. You must learn to forgive."

Shuster should be fired

Shuster deserves to be fired. He didn't just insult Hillary. I am tired of the pattern of woman bashing at MSNBC. Forget objective coverage. They openly hate Hillary, belittle women, and have no business calling themselves journalists.

David Shuster is a grown man and should be held accountable for his words. That was no slip of the tongue and no accident.

Common sense tells you that you don't go on NBC and say "pimped out."

Could you imagine Tom Brokaw saying anything like that? The media has sunk to an all time low--no truth, no dignity.

And I'm not surprised that Barbara Walters would defend somebody like Shuster. I'm sure she's taken a lot of crapola in her day and she can't see that younger women are tired of being treated with disrespect.

She didn't say anything about firing him.

She said they need to address their pattern of behavior. And they do. Good for her.

Clinton is right

The Clintons have always been careful about Chelsea and the right has had a disgusting record with regard to their daughter - see McCain's gross joke and the general nastiness about a Then-13 year olds looks. Enough is enough.

He crossed a line. Sen Clinton has no obligation to forgive MSNBC.

It is so obvious to me...

...that the "pimping out" comment is being used by the Hillary Clinton campaign as a way to draw attention to Hillary defending her daughter, making women voters think of her as a fierce mother who will do anything to keep her child safe from harm, etc.

The public backlash against Chris Matthews and the "Hillary crying" incident certainly worked in Clinton's favor. So I see this as the Clinton camp attempting Part 2.

Let's face it, this was a sloppy, offhanded colloquialism, nothing more. The guy apologized in the most non-hedging, unambiguous way.

When you apologize to somebody sincerely, and they keep coming after you.....they want something else.

This Seems Excessive

This just is another instance of the Clinton machine grabbing hold of a publicity bone and not letting go. Yes, he used the words poorly. Yes, he shoul apologize. But, I use "pimp" in this way alot casually, and dont mean ANY reference to running a sex business, and obviously neither did he. This is a reminder that I need to be more careful with language, and so does he. But, the lack of grace in accepting the apology is offputting in the extreme.

That said -- it was a lame comment

And in case anybody thinks I'm *defending* Shuster, no, he's an idiot. There's no reason a professional broadcaster should EVER use that kind of colloquialism about ANYBODY, whether it's Chelsea Clinton, Michelle Obama, or George Bush's nephew...

Media Matters for America has full coverage of this incident as well as other sexism at MSNBC and elsewhere. They've done a good job of documenting everything. I'm all for it, and I think they've succeeded in giving Matthews and company notice to clean up their act.

That said -- I do think the Clinton camp wants to work this to a voting advantage.

GROSS IS GROSS

Alex:

Why did you have to take quotes from a man like Gross? Articles like this just keep these idiotic men in business, which seems to be the case for you as well.

Lets get one thing straight. Whatever happens to David Shuster is his own fault.

When he opened his mouth and stated the words "pimped out", he in his mind used those words as they originated.

So if we say someone is being "pimped out", that does not mean that are being rebuilt into a fancy car. What it means in the way Shuster said it was; the Mother (the pimp)was pimping her whore daughter out for her.

There is no way to say otherwise and I am sure big boy Shuster can handle it himself, since he was the ignoramous who said it.

I have the highest respect for all of the Clinton family and your article could have been less quoted by that loser Gross.

Why don't you become a real journalist and write within the piece instead of it being all quotes.

You and your article are really tasteless.
